My dh is insistent we get a Tesla. I am insistent we do not due to difference in opinion with Elon. AIBU?

Tell your H that better EVs are available and that driving a brand new Tesla will give him zero street cred - people will not think he is cool, they will think he is a brown nosing Elon Musk loving Trump supporting right wing twat.

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · 11/07/2026 14:53

If you’re contributing then you’re not unreasonable. If he wants one let him pay for it.

Yep. That’s pretty much what we think of our neighbour.

Rizzz · 11/07/2026 14:54

Perhaps have another chat with Elon and see if you can come to some sort of agreement this time.

LadyJ129 · 11/07/2026 14:56

Are you politically aligned with the CEOs of all the other companies you buy stuff from then?

LaurieFairyCake · 11/07/2026 14:57

I’d rather shit in my hands and clap than give musk money - he’s a grade A cunt

Yes this, I often spend years and years snooping and stalking business owners to check out their lifestyles, politics, frequency of towel washing. Unless Im satisfied I dont buy their goods.

Happyjoe · 11/07/2026 14:59

Absolutely not.

happidayss · 11/07/2026 14:59

I lose respect for anyone who drives a Tesla

Morepositivemum · 11/07/2026 15:00

Unfortunately they’re quite cheap compared to a lot of evs now, my problem with them is I can’t see how they don’t lead to more road accidents with all the gimmicks, the screen, games, the modes it can go onto where eg you can see people walking about but change them to reindeer etc etc. I personally think all that rubbish should be banned!!

Around here, some people were doing the nazi salute to all Tesla drivers after Elon did his.

Morepositivemum · 11/07/2026 15:01

Ps tell him to look up the cost of new tyres, it’s eye wateringly expensive!!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 11/07/2026 16:35

I’d rather have a polestar. That said I can’t afford either and have a Skoda fabia

BlackTogetherAgain67 · 11/07/2026 16:39

Teslas are amazing. They are hands down the best cars you can get.

Musk only owns about 13% of Tesla.

I don't know what street you're on but where I am they are highly desirable.

They're also being used by the police extensively now to catch criminals - almost as much as ring doorbells - because they have so much technology running all the time that can record people around them and pick up GPS signals etc.

SweepSqueaks · 11/07/2026 16:48

We’ve got three electric cars and dh and I have had two each before the ones we have now and the Tesla is by far the best. We aren’t white so maybe that’s why we haven’t seen any Nazi salutes from strangers. Nobody has ever said anything about it.

LlynTegid · 11/07/2026 16:51

Your opinion I share. A smaller car would be better.

Given how hated Elon Musk is, a risk of vandalism to the car is greater than average, though unacceptable.

skiprun · 11/07/2026 16:53

I absolutely love my Tesla.

I wouldn’t base buying a car on a shareholder. I tend not to judge folk by what car they have and think those who do are arseholes.

A quick Google is so much easier than having to snoop and stalk you poor love!

You've wasted so much time and ypu shouldn't put yourself down referring to due diligence as though its something to be ashamed of.

Theres even some lists on Mumsnet of less than savoury characters whose brands you may wish to avoid.

Honestly its very very easy to vote with your pocket and other than your vote its probably the most powerful tool you have.

Cosimarocks · 11/07/2026 16:58

Can’t help but judge Tesla drivers. It feels rather like waving a Musk flag nowadays (and all that comes with that).

Also, hasn’t their resale value dropped massively as nobody wants them?

Loubissou · 11/07/2026 16:59

YANBU.

Get a Polestar.

loosestrife · 12/07/2026 13:40

Can't stand Musk but have a Tesla.Don't get one if it doesn't suit your requirements but it's a car, not any kind of endorsement.

Betadelta · 12/07/2026 13:45

I would feel the same as you OP for the same reason.

missmollygreen · 12/07/2026 13:49

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · 11/07/2026 14:54

Yep. That’s pretty much what we think of our neighbour.

Do you only buy products from companies that you approve of the owner then?

Its just a car.

JHound · 12/07/2026 14:22

I would never give that man my money so agree with you on Teslas.
