My dh is insistent we get a Tesla. I am insistent we do not due to difference in opinion with Elon. AIBU?

If it's a free company car then maybe, but otherwise, no way should you be paying your money for that rubbish.

Isitevensummer · 13/07/2026 18:22

I wouldn't drive are if you paid me, the people I know who have them are getting rid of them,

Bubblesgun · 13/07/2026 18:27

The new electric volvos are amazing. I so want the EX 90 to replace my T8 XC90 but my husband disagrees and we can run ours ti the grave. Still, i want the new one 🤣

i have no care in the world about a car but i will not drive a BMW or mercedes anymore (dont like the feel), and i would never buy a tesla for the same reason as you.

YetAnotherAlias62 · 13/07/2026 18:30

YABU - they're ugly with really poor build quality.
Plus EVs are so big and heavy that I'm sure they cause more road damage than normal cars.
There are other EVs that look more normal.
And I'm with you - there's no way I'd want to put money into Elon's pocket!

LadyJ129 · 11/07/2026 14:56

Are you politically aligned with the CEOs of all the other companies you buy stuff from then?

Are all other CEOs funding right wing parties in countries they don’t live in, and performing blatant sieg heil gestures on stage?

Myli1 · 13/07/2026 18:35

YANBU - I feel exactly the same way. I wouldn’t drive a Tossla if you gave me one for free.

Smartiepants79 · 13/07/2026 18:36

There must be a decent electric car out there that you can buy that doesn’t involve giving money to that giant egomaniac.
Also, I don’t think they have the street cred they had once upon a time..

Settlersa · 13/07/2026 18:41

They are a bit cheap

NotSoLittle · 13/07/2026 18:52

Funny enough my sister had her annual H&S training and one of the guys said he hoped no one had a tesla as apparently it's very difficult to open the doors from outside in the event of them losing power. So even leaving Elon out of it I wouldn't want one on safety grounds.

scoobysnaxx · 13/07/2026 18:53

Absolutely no. I judge them heavily. Would never support such a vile man.

randomchap · 13/07/2026 18:56

Anyone buying a Tesla after Musk outed himself as a complete and total dickhead is themselves also a dickhead

daughterfromhell · 13/07/2026 18:56

I feel a bit sorry for people who bought/leased a Tesla before Elon went full fash.

I heavily judge anyone with a recent one. It’s not fair at all but I’d be worried about it being vandalised.

Spangers · 13/07/2026 18:56

Besides the whole Elon Cunt thing, a relative of mine has one and every time I’ve sat in the back I’ve felt horrifically travel sick.

SweepSqueaks · 11/07/2026 16:48

We’ve got three electric cars and dh and I have had two each before the ones we have now and the Tesla is by far the best. We aren’t white so maybe that’s why we haven’t seen any Nazi salutes from strangers. Nobody has ever said anything about it.

People in the real world really aren't bothered which cars people drive. It's only on mumsnet that you get twats trying to dictate to others what they should and should not be doing depending on their political stance.

jackstini · 13/07/2026 19:17

Got ours way before the twattishness came out but I’m not going to sell and lose money when Musk owns such a small amount of Tesla

It’s also the easiest car I’ve ever driven, v comfy for passengers (I ferry a lot around in a volunteer role) charges super fast and has barely cost anything over the past few years (1 MOT and £650 for 4 new tyres)

There are not many EVs as cheap - and I would miss the 80% saving vs petrol!

If anyone judges me purely on my company car then that judgement is not worth much

user1497787065 · 13/07/2026 19:28

I would love a Tesla at the moment if only for the cooling seats!

JHound · 13/07/2026 21:20

bestchooseanother · 12/07/2026 15:49

If you use Amazon, Facebook etc I'm not sure you have any right to complain about Musk. He's just louder about it, which I actually probably prefer to the behind-closed-doors interfering of the others. A lot of people don't even seem to know much about the behaviour of other tech billionaires, maybe because Musk gets all the headlines and presumably some people only read headlines. He is very definitely not the worst!

Plus, unlike the others at least his companies - with the definite exception of 'X' - do good things. Tesla bringing electric cars to the mainstream should absolutely be celebrated, even if they as a company seem to have lost their way rather. And everyone I know who has a Tesla says they'd never go back, they are evidently extremely good cars. It would also be significantly less morally concerning than buying Chinese.

I have not heard anything about Jeff Bezos or Mark Zuckerberg being far-right, ultra racist, weirdos.

Lararoft · 13/07/2026 21:45

My sister was offered one as a company car and refused as she did not want to be seen in a swasti-car.
So was given a top range Mini instead, she’s happy with that.

IGotHam · 13/07/2026 21:46

I judge anybody who has a Tesla. I drive an electric car and I won’t even charge at the Tesla chargers. He’s a white supremacist.

Of course she did 🙄Do you really think they'd be on the road if that was the case? They'd all be recalled.

LaterMeansNever · 13/07/2026 21:54

Not unreasonable if you don’t want one. We have 4 cars in our household, 2 of which are Teslas. I really like them.

They're great for that but it only works on the front seats 😞

SpottyAlpaca · 13/07/2026 21:55

YANBU.

I like my cars & I'm not a badge snob but there is only one car brand I would not buy on principle : Tesla. Elon Musk will not be getting a penny of my money. I’m sure he will be devastated to read that, but going by Tesla’s sales figures throughout Europe, plenty of people agree with me.

nutbrownhare15 · 13/07/2026 21:56

Even if you gave me one for free I wouldn't drive it.

Just repeating what was said (it wasn't in the UK if that makes a difference).
