AIBU to feel like my holiday has been ruined before we’ve even gone?

AIBU to feel like my holiday has been ruined before we’ve even gone?
My husband’s mum and her partner suggested that we all book a cottage in Wales together because they said they wanted to spend some proper time with us as a family.
We booked the cottage for me, my husband, our three children, his mum and her partner. It only sleeps seven, so it was booked for exactly the seven of us.
His mum has now invited another child to come for the whole holiday. Because the cottage only sleeps seven, her partner is now going to sleep in their camper van at night so that the child can take her place inside the cottage.
What makes this harder for me is that his mum and her partner don’t spend a huge amount of time with our three children. They already spend far more time with the child they have invited and are very close to her.
This holiday was their idea. They were the ones who said they wanted to go away with us and spend time with our family. I work full time and have very limited annual leave, so taking a week off is a big thing for me. It now feels as though I’m using that precious time on a holiday that has been completely changed from what I agreed to.
I had already made it clear that I didn’t want anyone else coming. I had also specifically spoken about our last family camping trip and how badly that went.
On that trip, several adults essentially dropped their children at the campsite and then went off to enjoy a relaxing week themselves. The children were left crammed into everybody else’s tents and camper vans, and the adults who had actually stayed at the campsite ended up looking after them all.
I had already said I did not want to be put in that position again. I had that conversation only weeks before this happened, which is partly why I feel so ignored.
The child was asked if she wanted to come and initially said no. I thought that should have been the end of it. Instead, it was brought up again, and she eventually agreed. His mum and partner now feels guilty and wishes they didn’t invite her but it’s done now.
I even suggested that they could simply explain that they had spoken to me and, because of my health and everything that has happened recently, I really needed the holiday to be focused on spending time with my own children. They chose not to do that.
I have PoTS and reactive hypoglycaemia and struggle with dizziness, blackouts, weakness, fatigue and my heart rate shooting up when I stand.
More recently, I was taken into hospital with stroke-like symptoms, including slurred speech, numbness and weakness down one side. Thankfully, a stroke was ruled out, but I’m still experiencing weakness in my arm and leg and problems with my speech at times. I’m now waiting for neurological investigations and neuro physiotherapy.
After such a frightening and exhausting time, I genuinely needed this break. I wanted to use my limited time away from work to spend time with my husband and children, and I hoped the children would finally get some proper time with their grandparents too.
Instead, I now feel as though the focus will mainly be on the child they have invited, because she is the child they already spend the most time with. They have changed the sleeping arrangements and moved one of the original adults out of the cottage to make sure she can come.
It isn’t that I dislike the child, because I don’t, and none of this is her fault. My issue is entirely with the adults. They invited another child onto a holiday that was already full, despite knowing I didn’t want anyone else coming and despite the fact that this was supposed to be their opportunity to spend time with us and our children.
I’m also worried that I’ll end up helping to look after her. If she becomes upset, plays up, wants to go home or needs lots of attention, it will affect the entire holiday. If there are any major problems, her mum will need to come and collect her. I cannot take responsibility for another child while managing my health and looking after my own three.
I feel like I have no choice but to go, put a smile on my face and make sure my children have a lovely time. They’ve been looking forward to it and would be devastated if we cancelled. It wouldn’t be fair for them to lose their holiday because of a decision they had no part in.
But for me, it no longer feels like the holiday I agreed to use my annual leave for. I’m not looking forward to it anymore. It feels like a waste of the very limited time I get off work, and I feel resentful, anxious and hurt that the one boundary I clearly set was ignored.
I’ve decided that after this I won’t agree to any more family holidays, camping trips or similar gatherings, because I don’t trust that the same thing wouldn’t happen again.
AIBU to feel this was unfair, particularly when the holiday was their idea because they claimed they wanted to spend time with us and our children?

I was up until 5am thinking this this morning. I’d be asking them to as this has nothing to do with me. I’m still fuming. I say I’ve drawn a line. But I don’t think I have. Haha

You can still draw a boundary. You can tell them they are not to come to the cottage and to go and have a holiday elsewhere in the camper van. That if they come to the cottage, you will not be spending time with them if the niece is with them. That you will not, under any circumstances, be looking after or feeding the niece, and all her care needs/supervision are 100% their responsibility. Get your bloody useless husband to back you up - why isn't he the one taking this on, they are his family?!

Bonkers1966 · 12/07/2026 17:07

These people sound vile. You poor thing 😔

BirthdayTrash · 12/07/2026 17:22

We’ve said about the insurance and the over occupancy. They have said IF it’s an issue she will take the van and park nearby.

Tell them to stay in the van elsewhere anyway. You can meet up for an hour or two each day but you aren’t prepared to risk your family holiday because of their underhandedness. Don’t let them cross the threshold. Meet in a neutral place. Presumably you’ll be the only one with the key box code so they can’t get in without you being there.

They have manipulated you and coerced you into a situation that makes your holiday harder and not restful.
At the end of the week I would be telling them that this is the last holiday you will be doing together.
They have purposefully done this. Awful

I agree. Their behaviour is absolutely disgusting. I don't think you've been a Mug at all. You've been trying to deal politely with an adult but they are incredibly manipulative and you couldn't have guessed they'd go this far.

The lesson is that
The MIL doesn't give a damn what you think or want. In her mind you are there to service her needs.
So stop giving a damn about offending her.
She has seriously crossed a line.

I wouldn't be engaging in any holiday activities with them. I hope your DH finds his words to tell them that this is utterly unacceptable. i would stop worrying about being polite and I would be very firm with all three of them and not worry what they think. Particularly if the DNs behaviour becomes disruptive.

Going forward the MIL goes on an information diet. Never discuss holiday or any other special plans with her again.

I'm so sorry that this has happened to you when you are recovering from feeling so unwell. You health comes FIRST as you have to be there for your DC... so you and your DC are your first priority always. What ever MIL or SIL want comes a very very long way down the list.
I wouldn't be so keen to foster a close relationship with people who are this manipulative and combative. A civil one yes, but close? I think it would only lead to more occasions like this.

I hope you do manage to enjoy most of your holiday.. and hope that you can plan a nice relative free weekend away later on.

If it wasn’t for the children wanting to spend time with her I’d have 100% done this. I even tested the water but my children are too excited for this. They are young carers they have a hard time with my health. Saw me getting put into an ambulance last week. I can’t let them ruin it for them. I have to suck it up but I know that they care very little for my children and will protect them from them from now on.

Im so sorry OP. I've just spotted this update and was shocked to read it.

I don't want to add to the pressure but your DH needs to take charge of all this.
You deserve a restful break with your little ones so you can all recover from all the stress and strains you've been through.
I do hope very much that you are able to do this.

A nearby campsite for them sounds like a very good idea.

SconehengeRevenge · 12/07/2026 17:40

Just found this thread.
@Heathercost, you come across as an absolutely lovely person.

I hope the week is better than you fear now.

Agree about insisting they all sleep in the van, and also agree with pp's that you do NOTHING for this child. Absolutely no childcare.
Yes, include her in meals you're cooking, but ILs pay for her food, snacks n treats

I’m sorry that you have such a poor MIL andsuch a poor husband too (he should have been the one to stand up to his mum really. Esp seeing your health afd tge impact on his own children) 💐💐💐

Now I’m quite happy you have NOT drawn a line under it.
Because their behaviour was shit. And the leaving early says it all really.

I hope you’ll find a way to enjoy your holiday.
I also hope you’ve made it clear to your dh that now things are in his hands. HE deals with MIL. HE ensures you have together as a family wo them (your dcs will that badly even they say they want to see their cousin). HE deals with his parents when they want to do something aporopriate to your niece but not your dcs.
Time for him to step up. Otherwise things will never change out of his fear to rock the boat.

Acheyelbows · 12/07/2026 16:29

That's going to make her feel better. They've said they're already there, what can she do.

Tell them to enjoy the rest of their holiday and confirm they won't be seeing them. Unbelievable passivity to just put up with this.

I'm worh tou on this, it would really worry me. I'd be scared neighbours would notice and report us.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 12/07/2026 17:56

@Heathercost thank you for coming back & updating.
Could you do the following.
Contact the owner full of apologies. Tell them that you had stupidly told relatives about the holiday who then said they were going to camp nearby & meet up.
You have now found out that they are on their way and intend to park camper van on property driveway. You have expressly told them not to but they have not come back to you. Again you did not agree to this and cannot believe they are doing it.
You do not wish to contradict the t&cs and do not wish to lose your booking because of this.
You are more than happy for owners to tell them to remove themselves and the campervan as they will exceed the occupancy limits.

This will hopefully then give you some peace & quiet as they disappear off to the nearest campsite with space. Dh (& you if you wish) can then meet up with them on neutral ground.

She is always the one that gets chosen to do extra things when the others get left behind. Basically I expressed how I felt. Said it’s not right and said about the insurance etc. little did we know they were already driving up and staying in the van a few days before the cottage. It is what it is. We will make the most of it.my children have been packing their toys and clothes all week so I can’t do it to them to take that away from them for something that wasn’t my fault. Lesson learnt and we will never ever do this again and they now know they too. I’ve drawn a line under it. I don’t want an atmosphere. But yeah. Not too happy but been put in a corner

Yeah that's the best thing to do. Just go with it now. And NEVER again. These people aren't Ur friends. They don't have Ur best interest at heart.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 12/07/2026 18:00

^^^
I am not a holiday property owner so maybe one of the previous ones who posted could give a feasibility answer to this suggestion.

Victorius19 · 12/07/2026 18:01

This has disaster written all over it, OP.

Delphiniumandlupins · 12/07/2026 18:03

You don't actually have to contact the holiday cottage owner. You can simply say that you have done so and the RV and its occupants (all 3 of them) are not allowed to use the cottage facilities or park there overnight. If you want to invite them for a day visit or meet elsewhere for a day out together, that's up to you.

This is what I would do. Cheeky beyond belief.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 12/07/2026 18:10

I'd also maybe add that as it was full capacity at the time of booking the owners will only accept those who's names were on the booking form at the time of booking/payment.

Mumwithagreenhouse · 12/07/2026 18:28

It sounds to me like they don’t want you there…. They’ve done this so that you bow out but your partner & DC go. Especially as they then went and asked the girl again, even after you made your feelings clear that you weren’t happy about it. I’d bet my bottom dollar that they want you to flounce

Mumwithagreenhouse · 12/07/2026 18:32

Also, if the holiday cottage owner finds out that you’ve an extra guest taking you above the max occupancy, they’ll be furious as it will void their insurance for the period of your stay.

NancyMeyers · 12/07/2026 18:36

Did I read that correctly that it's not long ago you were taken in an ambulance to hospital, and they still aren't thinking about what's best for you?! No concern about what you need at the moment. They've shown you exactly who they are. Act accordingly.

LivingMyLifeWithKindness · 12/07/2026 18:43

I think that instead of pootling around asking the cottage owner to save me from a holiday I wouldn’t enjoy and the bad feelings, I’d try to cancel the cottage for a refund (even partial) and rebook a cottage for 4 elsewhere at this point. Put yourself first. X

dementedmummy · 12/07/2026 18:46

Heathercost · 12/07/2026 16:40

I think they already know this. I’ve never ever spoken up for myself. I’m docile and I get on with a lot of they know they’ve done wrong. She said she felt sick. She should never have invited her but it’s done bow. She couldn’t have felt that sick or she would have not picked her up early

If you can't stick up for yourself face to face it's time for a text message " I'm really disappointed that you have invited someone else on a holiday that I have paid for without having the courtesy to ask first. I have limited time off. I wanted to spend this week with my children and you without accommodating anyone else. Let me be clear. I have plans with my children. If you chose to join those plans, I expect you to both pay and look after the child. I will not be looking after the child in any way. I won't be providing snacks, paying for the child or making any accomodations for the child's behaviour. Don't ask me to look after the child or provide for her because I won't. If you find this offensive in any way, remember it is you who has caused the problem. It is therefore your problem to solve. I'm really hurt that notwithstanding that I told you how I felt about who I wanted to interact with on this holiday, you have insisted on bringing her and sought to make me out to be difficult. It's not acceptable.

That being said, go on holiday stick to your guns, enjoy your shiny new backbone and the week away with your kids x

Marmalade71 · 12/07/2026 19:11

I’m appalled by your husband not stepping up to prevent this. He should be telling them in no uncertain terms that if they ever want to see him or their grandchildren again then they won’t show up. Pathetic.

Voneska · 12/07/2026 19:15

I know what I would do but it wouldn't suit everyone else. I would book another venue, to stay in, nearby; becausr Iwould be fuming that I had lost control of the situation. I know that, if I'm p......Ed to start with then I would not ever be happy. I would book another venue nearby but make it a shorter stay( but not mention that it's shorter)until the day came to leave. This smart move will make me happy that I will not be tricked into doing dhit that I did not plan for. SORTED!!!!!

RandomMess · 12/07/2026 19:19

I would just disinvite the in-laws after tomorrow 🤷‍♀️

WhistPie · 12/07/2026 19:21

You have got a totally shit husband OP. A decent husband would be sorting all this out and looking after you. Yours isn't.
