AIBU to feel like my holiday has been ruined before we’ve even gone?

AIBU to feel like my holiday has been ruined before we’ve even gone?
My husband’s mum and her partner suggested that we all book a cottage in Wales together because they said they wanted to spend some proper time with us as a family.
We booked the cottage for me, my husband, our three children, his mum and her partner. It only sleeps seven, so it was booked for exactly the seven of us.
His mum has now invited another child to come for the whole holiday. Because the cottage only sleeps seven, her partner is now going to sleep in their camper van at night so that the child can take her place inside the cottage.
What makes this harder for me is that his mum and her partner don’t spend a huge amount of time with our three children. They already spend far more time with the child they have invited and are very close to her.
This holiday was their idea. They were the ones who said they wanted to go away with us and spend time with our family. I work full time and have very limited annual leave, so taking a week off is a big thing for me. It now feels as though I’m using that precious time on a holiday that has been completely changed from what I agreed to.
I had already made it clear that I didn’t want anyone else coming. I had also specifically spoken about our last family camping trip and how badly that went.
On that trip, several adults essentially dropped their children at the campsite and then went off to enjoy a relaxing week themselves. The children were left crammed into everybody else’s tents and camper vans, and the adults who had actually stayed at the campsite ended up looking after them all.
I had already said I did not want to be put in that position again. I had that conversation only weeks before this happened, which is partly why I feel so ignored.
The child was asked if she wanted to come and initially said no. I thought that should have been the end of it. Instead, it was brought up again, and she eventually agreed. His mum and partner now feels guilty and wishes they didn’t invite her but it’s done now.
I even suggested that they could simply explain that they had spoken to me and, because of my health and everything that has happened recently, I really needed the holiday to be focused on spending time with my own children. They chose not to do that.
I have PoTS and reactive hypoglycaemia and struggle with dizziness, blackouts, weakness, fatigue and my heart rate shooting up when I stand.
More recently, I was taken into hospital with stroke-like symptoms, including slurred speech, numbness and weakness down one side. Thankfully, a stroke was ruled out, but I’m still experiencing weakness in my arm and leg and problems with my speech at times. I’m now waiting for neurological investigations and neuro physiotherapy.
After such a frightening and exhausting time, I genuinely needed this break. I wanted to use my limited time away from work to spend time with my husband and children, and I hoped the children would finally get some proper time with their grandparents too.
Instead, I now feel as though the focus will mainly be on the child they have invited, because she is the child they already spend the most time with. They have changed the sleeping arrangements and moved one of the original adults out of the cottage to make sure she can come.
It isn’t that I dislike the child, because I don’t, and none of this is her fault. My issue is entirely with the adults. They invited another child onto a holiday that was already full, despite knowing I didn’t want anyone else coming and despite the fact that this was supposed to be their opportunity to spend time with us and our children.
I’m also worried that I’ll end up helping to look after her. If she becomes upset, plays up, wants to go home or needs lots of attention, it will affect the entire holiday. If there are any major problems, her mum will need to come and collect her. I cannot take responsibility for another child while managing my health and looking after my own three.
I feel like I have no choice but to go, put a smile on my face and make sure my children have a lovely time. They’ve been looking forward to it and would be devastated if we cancelled. It wouldn’t be fair for them to lose their holiday because of a decision they had no part in.
But for me, it no longer feels like the holiday I agreed to use my annual leave for. I’m not looking forward to it anymore. It feels like a waste of the very limited time I get off work, and I feel resentful, anxious and hurt that the one boundary I clearly set was ignored.
I’ve decided that after this I won’t agree to any more family holidays, camping trips or similar gatherings, because I don’t trust that the same thing wouldn’t happen again.
AIBU to feel this was unfair, particularly when the holiday was their idea because they claimed they wanted to spend time with us and our children?

I'm actually struggling to believe some of what you have written.

I don't believe for one minute that they haven't financially contributed towards this holiday, because according to you, it was THEIR idea to all go on holiday together, but you and your husband have arranged it, booked it AND paid for it all, you have also done all the food shopping for everyone, yet they somehow knew everything about it, including how to get in.

You are either not being truthful, very well off and have previously set this precedent that you pay for absolutely everything, or you and your husband don't have a single spine between you.

I honestly don't know anyone in real life who would allow their guests to dictate the course of a holiday that they were neither organising or paying for. If they were paying half it would be annoying but ultimately it would be their holiday to make joint decisions on.. it's the only thing that makes sense to me.

If what you are saying is true and you are happy modelling all this to YOUR children, it beggars belief.

Just say sorry that won't work for us. Or tell a lie and say insurance won't cover the extra person. Or any lie you like.

Hi. It’s been. Ok. She has been upsetting my children. They have been sharing their toys and snacks etc and she refused to even let them play with her ball. She sat at the beach all day yesterday in the van with a miserable face refused to talk to the children. Other than that we’ve kept out the way. Didn’t bring any food at all so luckily I did a £300 shop. They grudged my daughter a bit of toffee popcorn though as that belong to the niece they picked up on the way back from the beach. I think we are going to leave early tonight. Been a mixed back. Lesson learnt but the kiddies have still had fun which is the main think

Can your dh send them a screenshot of the receipt and say your share is £xxx. Here are my bank details.

This is the worst part of mumsnet for me, knowing full well that if OP stood up for herself, it would solve he problem at hand, and would also change everything for her and how they treat her going forward.. but she just won't.

It's more frustrating because these in laws are already on holiday with the child in the camper van, they do not need to be staying with OP at all, so she can feel zero guilt about fucking them off.. but she just won't.

Why bother coming to ask if your in laws are being unfair to commandeer a holiday that YOU are paying for, when you aren't going to do anything about it anyway.

Agreed, and I feel really sorry that the kids are being taught that they are second place in all things.

"Sure in-laws, go ahead and use my babies as a doormat to wipe your feet on. Can I buy you another holiday?"

Bloody Nora.

I walked out and said don’t worry I’ll get you your own. It’s hard as when you have a child saying can I have this can I have that. How can I sit and say to my children to share and be kind and then say no. But inside I’m just so pissed off. Other half isn’t happy but putting on a brave face to keep the peace. For now. I think this will blow up once we are home and the children arnt there

Tbh I think you should have had a word with your dh there and then.

And refuse that your dcs share with the niece. Not everything is for sharing anyway. And for me, a sticker book is well part of that.

Your PIL are awful and manipulative. Time fir a huge reset, whether it upsets them or not.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 16/07/2026 12:37

I know you don't have any time off left but could you possibly plan a weekend break with your DC so that you all have something to look forward to after this... or some nice day trips?
The thing is, you have now overwhelmingly established that the in laws behaviour is unacceptable. They now know they have more than crossed a line (your MIL saying she felt sick that she had invited the neice without asking but then heading to the holiday home before you to make sure they couldn't be stopped)
That behaviour is plain for your DH to see... and its made you raise these issues with them.
So stressful as it has been , you can now make sure that it doesn't happen again and you can make sure that they don't treat you like this again.

But at the same time, awful as it is, it would be a shame to let this fester and continue to make you stressed... I'm not sure how to do that, but perhaps you could talk to someone who does.
It's deprived you of a carefree time with your DC, which is why I'm suggesting planning some carefree times in the near future . Also. make plans now for how you want to spend your time with the DC. Making plans in advance makes it easier to turn things down and not be hijacked.

Galling as it may be to leave early, it sounds like you have put up with as much as you can take, so perhaps its better to cut it short and have a more relaxing time at home, especially as you've been so ill. Wishing you all the best

AnneLovesGilbert · 16/07/2026 12:37

It’s just been a torment and his mum and partner have just let it happen.

Bollocks. You did.

Really has shown what they think of us.

You already knew that.

Never again

I don’t believe you.

Your poor children. Literally no one put them or their needs first. That’s shocking.

A single spine between them. ‘Hubby is trying so hard to keep the peace’ WHY THE FUCK IS HE BOTHERING? Wait till evening and tell them to go back to their caravan and not to go anywhere near you the next day, they are not coming inside again, they can consider the holiday cancelled and they are toxic to your children with their enormous favouritism so they will not be seeing them for a long time and there will never again be a holiday. Never.

there’s your peace right there. Blissful wonderful peace.

I must say I do sometimes think people need to really work on their own confidence and self esteem before having children. Parents are supposed to be able to advocate for their children, defend them and keep them out of harm’s way. How would the OP and her husband deal with an actual emergency or difficulty if they can’t even handle such a basic issue? It’s crazy that two grown adults allowed themselves to be held to ransom like this.

outerspacepotato · 16/07/2026 12:49

You and your husband are so afraid to put up a boundary and say no that now your kids are having a shit holiday. You knew this would happen. You it you and your husband's fears ahead of your kids.

You and your husband are not just martyring yourself, but your kids. They'll always remember the shit vacations because their parents wouldn't say no.

PLEASE stick to the 'never again'. I'm glad you all got through the holiday, and you can look forward to lots of lovely holidays without CFs in the future!

croydon15 · 16/07/2026 13:09

If you do leave early, take all food with you, lock up and hand back the keys to the owner.
PILs are total cf piss takers and will take over the cottage once you have left otherwise.
They have ruined your time with your children.
For the sake of your health and your kids happiness, do not let them ride roughshod over you ever again.

Bobcurlygirl · 16/07/2026 13:54

I do get you though OP... I have the FIL from hell (not that I would go away with him ever) but I use him as example of poor behaviour. We drove 2 hours to visit them and I made fresh soup, bread, crumble and custard. Dishing up I realised I'd forgotten then butter/marg. Grabbed his butter dish and ask no3 child to put it on the table. Two minutes later he appeared with said butter dish and tried to hide it in the fridge as he didn't want to share it. "oh dear children, grandad has forgotten his manners and how to share"... I'd already dished up soup at that point but afterwards I pointedly didn't serve him any pudding and said "oh dear forgotten my manners"... He sulked of course.. He was more careful around me going forwards as I said I was going to treat him how he treated me. Again my husband was cringing as he has been brainwashed into "keeping the peace". I suspect your husband is brainwashed into keeping the peace too sorry. Safe travel home x

It won't make a point except to confirm to the PiLs that their son and his wife are just as spineless as they thought they were.

Keeping the peace is only ever good for those that are the one's causing the problems....they really like other's to keep the peace, it's how they get what they want. Making you think you're in the wrong. They're no more than manipulative bullies.

Being the one's to keep the peace will only get you shat on from a great hight time and time again.

If these people offer nothing to your life but trouble, close the door on them, they wont like it, bullies never like the victims to have a say in their own life, over time you'll realise that you've lost nothing after all.

Live your own life, your MIL has shown you that the niece will always take priority and come before your DC, don't put them in a position for this to continue as they grow up.

Edited to add...
If you do go home early as the booking is in your name there's now way I'd be leaving MIL and the other two with acsess to the property. I'd tell them to leave, lock up and make sure they can't get back in.

OldGothsFadeToGrey · 16/07/2026 15:09

Children don't have to share or be kind to someone who will not do it back. Don't raise people-pleasers.

Agree.
Tell your children they do not have to share with her.

Do you want your children living your life, putting themselves last and marrying a partner who keeps the peace ahead of his own wife and children?

It wouldn't be me, and my children 100% know the importance of loving themselves FIRST, ahead of others.

Terfarina · 16/07/2026 20:28

OP, I think some people are being rather harsh with you. I completely get that once you are committed - and you were committed because your kids wanted to spend time with PILs and you were there you absolutely have to make the best of it and keep the peace so the holiday isn't trashed for your kids.

Kids may see their cousin being awful but are unlikely to notice or understand the bad behaviour of their grandparents. Kids don't need to be aware of animosity between adults and I don't think parents should be going against their usual teaching that you should share etc. Someone else behaving badly doesn't mean that all good behaviour should go out of the window,

I have to say though that if this was me I would be asking the interlopers to enjoy the rest of their holiday with golden child elsewhere and enjoying the rest of the time with my family in their absence.

Stand strong when you get home - these people have shown you exactly who they are and do not deserve your time or energy.

Noshowlomo · 16/07/2026 20:35

I agree, I think people are being harsh with you. I can tell this is it now. The absolute cheeky fuckers and your niece sounds like a brat, and it’s obvious to see how!
If you’ve travelled home I hope you’ve packed up most of the food

Shelleyblueeyes · 16/07/2026 21:00

I do sympathise and I too would be pissed off had the goal posts moved like this for my holiday but it's done now so you can either cancel or get on with it.

I guess you are going to get on with it and there is a good chance that all will be well. A lot of your worries are hyperthetical i.e. she might want to go home she might be a pain she might play up but also she might be perfectly fine and you might all have a great time.

If you decide to go you have got to go with a positive mindset.
X
