I know there have probably been other threads asking this, but really .... why?

Why would you say he is a "man of the people?"'(Public school educated stockbroker / multi millionaire)

Genuinely, what appeals about him?

If you voted Brexit, have you forgotten that he resigned from public office that day after his Leave campaign won?

It's an anonymous forum, so please be honest.

Reform don't have a good policy on immigration. And I say that objectively.
You may think they have a good mission statement on immigration, but the policy to achieve it is very thin, very flawed and comes with serious consequences.
There is a great deal of complex legislative changes required that will have significant impact on our own laws and protections, they will take a long time to draft and even longer to get through both houses. Reform would need a huge majority and to convince the Lords.
Twelve months notice is required to leave certain commitments before they could even get started.
When you dig below the ra ra to the nitty gritty work needed, you're looking at at least a year, probably more, before they could tow the first boat back to France.
All our political parties except the Greens are committed to tackling illegal immigration. But there's no quick fix. And that's the case for Reform as well.

I think this is a good point. But I don't agree that all parties want to fix this. Immigration went up a lot under the Tories. Voices in labour want to extend indefinite leave to remain to the Boriswave, explicitly because of high child poverty in the Boriswave (i.e., hurry up and give immigrants benefits)

I just dont think commitment to reducing immigration is equal across the parties.

Could you search for a graph of housebuilding over time? You will find this is absolutely not an era of high housebuilding.

Furthermore if you dislike this level of housebuilding I think you're obliged to be radically anti immigration, as this level of housebuilding is far below the population growth rate that our current immigration system causes.

But we have taken back control!

in the Boriswave of immigration we chose who to let in - nearly two million in two years because businesses were crying out for the workers! The immigrants were needed for economic growth and because were not having enough kids to pay for pensioners. It was a choice!

Businesses were crying out for workers to exploit, that is not the same thing as needing workers.

Iocanepowder · 11/07/2026 07:50

DB voted for reform in the last election.

The reasons he gave were based on their manifesto:

-Immigration/too many people putting pressure in services
-Scrapping net zero
-Banning trans ideology in schools
-Increasing stamp duty threshold
-Doing more for small and medium business

He said recently his views still stands and has been very concerned about actions Labour has taken, especially their impact on businesses and job losses.

Ah, another thread of people basically suggesting that the reason people like or vote for Farage or Reform is because they’re “not very bright.”

It’s a mystery to me why you can’t see that attitudes like this are the root of the problem!

Menopausalsourpuss · 11/07/2026 08:07

I haven't bothered reading all this thread as alot of the usual middle class political cluelessness but @ThatMauveQuail is spot on with all her comments. I am similarly at a loss to understand why anyone votes Labour - they have a track record (unlike Reform) of making the country much worse, but wouldn't dream of asking the politically unaware people of Mumsnet about it.

Sure, it was a choice that politicians took. It wasn't a choice that had popular backing. And for an individual voter who disagrees, it's reasonable for that individual voter to vote for a politician who will vote against immigration.

I think "businesses were crying out for the workers" is not true. In times of an acute worker shortage, you should see rapid wage growth, as employers compete for workers. You can just search for data, this hasn't happened. Maybe businesses wanted cheaper labour, but if your main asset is your labour, I dunno why you'd be excited by this.

"We're not having enough kids," this is true. However (a) if you bring in immigrants who are net recipients from the state, as we're doing, this doesn't help pay for anything (b) I think house prices are one contributing factor to lower birth rates, so importing people faster than you build houses suppresses birth rates.

Farage told them that Brexit would help them "Take Back Control." Now the average Brexit voter will be worse off than in 2016. Immigration has also increased. Yet they still vote for him!

Because brexit was never done properly. It was a mess, if it had been done well by people who believed in it things would be different.

FlappySnaps · 11/07/2026 08:16

Maybe people should think about why amazing, educated, female role models like Ann Widdecombe supported Nigel Farage.

It's not because she was "thick as mince" or sat in the pub ranting about "boat people" taking her job?

@ResprayingmyaferrarisIt’s shameful that voters cannot understand how the economy works yet get to vote on who will be running it. I’d quite like a basic test in order to vote. Because the low level of understanding is very worrying and that goes for the left too.

I don't find that worrying but I do find it concerning that anyone can be our.chamcellor and do untold damage with stupid schemes like taxing growth. They are the ones who need to pass some sort of threshold tests and have a rigorous team cross party /business leaders and eccomimists to sigh off any proposals by these people

Resprayingmyaferraris · 11/07/2026 08:27

@Mamma123838 many voted to stay in the EU based soley on their DC ability to travel across the EU

Exactly. When I was a teacher, every student knew about Hitler. None of them, hardly, had heard of Stalin or Mao. Terrifying.

Agree and not only the deaths ,camps and punishment for entire families if anyone spoke out but also the fact the "east " as in Eastern Europe became one giant prison camp for decades.

Do you seriously think it’s one person’s decision?

I mean, let’s look at the Liz trust situation where the lettuce got thrown under a bus. It was an absolute disaster and they’re crucified her but I don’t think for one moment she thought of it do you?

Yes that is true. I've actually found the low information voters are there ones who blindly voted remain based on what they were told by the BBC with no attempt at research. All the fellow leavers I knew had done alot of research despite what the BBC told you about "it was da bus". The idea that we care what a load of group thinkers who think they're the intelligent ones say about us and would even base our vote on that to spite them is ridiculous. And no I'm not a Nigel supporter, I think he's probably another Boris and support a different party but would vote Reform over the despicable Labour any day!

lightseeker · 11/07/2026 09:46

Lemonraider · 11/07/2026 00:47

Can you explain what this means?

"people who have most to lose from
a Reform govt are the ones to support Farage"

Well, in Clacton, a constituency with one of the highest Reform votes, over 60% of people claim some form/s of benefits. Yet a key policy of Reform is to reduce spending on benefits and make it much harder for people to claim.

And although Reform do pledge to raise the threshold at which people pay income tax to £20k, their tax policies are nevertheless skewed to disproportionately help the richest in society.

Although Reform claim (for now) they will keep health care free at the point of entry, it's far more likely that people will have to pay for healthcare beyond that, especially those with chronic conditions. You only have to look at people in places like Clacton to see that they are disproportionately afflicted with complex health problems (mental and physical).

Taking us out of the ECHR is not likely to bode well for workers rights and pay.

Again, I am NOT a Labour voter. I am NOT 'the left.' So don't ask me to defend Labour's policies as I didn't vote for them. I am disillusioned by all parties. But Reform are rotten at the core and they appeal to the dispossessed or to the very worst sentiments of humanity - in my view. Immigration is a cynical 'look over here' tactic via which Reform would insidiously erode the rights of the poorest and most vulnerable in society under their very noses.

Human trafficking hit record numbers in the UK last year. It ties in perfectly with illegal immigration because people who want to stay below the radar are less likely to want to go to the authorities.

An increasingly common setup is drug gangs running corner shops etc. One near me was recently busted after a reporter went in and scored coke and weed over the counter. They've just caught a guy in Blaby who was dubbed 'the godfather of the French migrant camps'. He was making up to £100k a week smuggling people over here.

He'd already been sentenced to five years in France but of course managed to get over here unvetted. He was driving illegally and had managed to set up two businesses, one literally next to an MP's office lol.

MaIeficent · 11/07/2026 09:52

I mean, Labour appointed a 19yo biological male as their minister for women didn't they? Wtf would he know about women's issues being a teenager and y'know a bloke.

Resprayingmyaferraris · 11/07/2026 10:22

@lightseeker and what are the NHS provisions like in Clacton ? Maybe they are great /maybe they need improvement and people don't mind paying a small levy if it means getting gold care.

I'm all for introducing a small levy like £10 it would make people think twice about being seen however the problem with introducing a charge system like we have seen under Blair is that successive governments then have an open door to raise what they want.

That's my only issue with introducing payment and it's a big stumbling block.

However maybe Clacron is a bastion of NHS care.

Exactly. All the people on MN threads who are rightly concerned about NEETs, for example, but don't make the connection between shop and bar jobs etc going to immigrants, and British teenagers not being able to get work experience in the way they used to. And these people think they're so intelligent and logical!
