I know there have probably been other threads asking this, but really .... why?

Why would you say he is a "man of the people?"'(Public school educated stockbroker / multi millionaire)

Genuinely, what appeals about him?

If you voted Brexit, have you forgotten that he resigned from public office that day after his Leave campaign won?

It's an anonymous forum, so please be honest.

He won't be able to stop the boats though will he? Why do they believe him, just because he says this?

Well, if anyone is going to do it, it will be him. But you are right, that he probably won't be able to, but people need to have hope otherwise they have nothing.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 10/07/2026 20:37

I think it’s quite telling that you asked Farage voters if they would mind explaining why they support him but you have only had people speculating as to why people might vote for him. I know it’s early days for this thread and I know the Mumsnet cohort is typically less right-wing but it’s interesting that you can’t actually get an answer to your actual question.
I think Reform provide easy answers to complex questions. For those members of society who are struggling, they suggest scapegoats to blame and a sense of reassurance that your misfortunes are not your own responsibility- “immigrants and corrupt, substandard politicians have doomed you to a life of poverty”, when the reality is multi-layered, complex and very difficult to fix and to imply otherwise is dishonest and divisive.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 10/07/2026 20:27

Because he has said that he will stop the boats. He is the only one they trust to do it.

Why would they care if he is public school stockbroker? They just want someone to stop the boats and they trust that he will do it.

People should care because he sells himself as a man of the people, standing in a pub having a pint. And people fall for it. They believe a multi millionaire who wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire, is the same as them.

Nearly a quarter of people in Clacton have no qualifications whatsoever and it's one of the most deprived areas of the country. No surprise that's where Farage chose to stand, easy pickings to convince them all their problems are down to the boat people.

Yes, but even among people who didn't finish school or have no qualifications whatsoever, do they genuinely think, "Oh look I've got no job because ... the boats." As opposed to looking at their own backgrounds.

I sadly have got people that I know wouldn’t describe them as friends, but I know them.
They do not want more black people in the country. And it’s as simple as that.
I don’t think we can overcomplicate this argument

Yes I totally agree. I just would have thought after 10 years of Farage, people wouod have seen through the shtick by now. Especially as they will invariably be worse off following Brexit.

Who else are the going to vote for? The Tories and Labour have both proved that they can't do it.

Because the thread isn’t a genuine attempt to find out why, it’s so people can ask supporters of farage why they are so stupid and tell them why they are wrong.

So by stopping the boats people think their lives are going to suddenly get better? They’re going to have a shock. So many people have no idea whatsoever of the size and complexity of the problems the UK (and many other countries) have. There’s no quick and easy fixes, despite what Farage says

PrettyLittleRose · 10/07/2026 20:47

Come off it @lightseeker 'oh can you pretty please explain WHY you support Nigel Farage. PWEEEEZE.' 🙏

No-one is going to do that on here, because all will happen is that they will be ridiculed and mocked, and called a thick, racist, piece of gammon.

I am not a Farage fan by the way but I know how these threads go!!!

Why would people in Clacton be voting for him though. It can't just be 'immigration.' What is the appeal?

Because he is the only politician who tells them what they want to hear.
And I say that NOT as a reform supporter.

Nigel has been able to say whatever he wants, because he has never had to back it up. I hate to think what will happen if he gets in. I think it will be brexit all over again.

Yes, but people need hope and he gives the hope. The other parties do not because they don't care about them.

Of course, Farage doesn't care about them either, but he pretends to and says what they want to hear. The other parties do not.

Backedoffhackedoff · 10/07/2026 21:01

IMe he appeals to contrarian personalities- people who like to shock, argue and wind up others. Everyone I know that likes him loves telling you this in the hope of getting into a row.

5128gap · 10/07/2026 21:03

When people are interviewed they always tend to speak about how bad things are in their town, run down high streets, plus everything being expensive, paying too much tax "and what for?"
They then say they think the government are doing a terrible job and not listening to people. That the "last lot were just as bad", so might as well give someone else a chance.
Sometimes they say they don't agree with "all these people on the boats"
I've never heard anyone speak about Farage's policies or how they think he will improve things. Just the problems they see and a hope/belief Farage will fix them.

Oliveoy · 10/07/2026 21:07

I think it can be quite difficult for people to unpick why their life is the way it is, to recognise generational poverty, that they never had opportunities, that we live in a deeply unequal society. It's so much easier to blame it all on immigrants.

If I asked why people support other politicians, I think people would be able to say. Regardless of whether or not they think anyone would agree with them.

But why do you think he can “stop the boats” and how? Lots of very clever, committed people hve thought long and hard about this so do you really think a man who is more interested in making money for himself than representing his constituents will do what may others can’t?

I genuinely want to understand the thought process ( even though I like to think I’d punch farage in the face if I met him) so I could help people he has fooled understand and find their way back to mainstream politics.

Yes. I never understand this. Most people committed to a political stance are happy to say why. I've been called stupid, plus other insults for my views, but I don't care, because I think those saying it are wrong.
Reform supporters are everywhere when it comes to criticising other political stances, especially 'lefties', pretty aggressively too. Yet when it comes to holding the floor and sharing their own, they suddenly turn into these nervous little souls scared the nasty women will call them thickos.

plus they are being stopped right? They’re hugely reduced

What I’m worried about is what they’ll move onto. Even if no one can “stop the boats” the uk is less and less attractive for migration every day and it won’t be long until they basically stop because even people who pay people smugglers would rather go elsewhere.

then what will he bang on about?

i genuinely think this is why they started on the Sikhs recently- they’re living up the next groups for the firing line, they know they don’t have much longer until migrants and Muslim hate is saturated

I doubt Reform voters are that bright. It's all about the 'boat' people to Reform voters.

Perhaps people are sick of being called 'thick' whenever the thought of them having opposing views comes up and so vote for him just to piss the likes of you who call them 'not all that bright' off?

I doubt anyone can stop boats, what they will do is to stop the benefits.
