To ask what scares you /freaks you out that you would not consider common? Mine is a children’s book!

My 3 year old is obsessed with “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” after having it read to her at preschool, she knows all of the words and we bought it as one of her gifts for her birthday.

We read a book every night at bed, whenever she reaches for this it gives me such bad goosebumps!

I don’t know if it’s the way it’s written, the pictures, I genuinely feel panic when they’re trying to get away from the bear and he’s in the background of the pictures and then at their front door and they’ve forgotten to lock it. I absolutely detest it 🥴 it gives me the right creeps!

This is baring in mind that all I read myself is psychological thrillers and I’ve watched so much true crime I could probably commit the perfect murder 😂 why do I have such a panicky/spooked response to a children’s book fgs!

Tortoises & turtles - the sight of them makes me feel physically sick.

Jelly and slime. No idea why but the thought of it even makes me gag 🤣

When I was a small child long ago I had one of those sets of blocks which you turn over to find different pictures on each facet. The images were scenes from fairy tales and in the Red Riding Hood picture I would become hysterical if I saw the block with the wolf's paw, just resting on the grass. Oddly I didn't mind the one with the wolf's open jaw and all the teeth etc - it was this innocuous image of a little paw.

My parents were baffled and frankly, so am ! They had to remove that block in the end, which rather spoiled the other 5 images, but there was just something about the way the paw was resting on the grass....weird!

I've never seen the animated version. I don't have a problem with Bear Hunt personally and I've always assumed it's a sort of moral fable - sometimes you can't get round or under etc things, difficulties, situations - you just have to man/woman up and 'go through them'. And the message is, you can do it!

But if you find something scary, that's a personal thing and you have every right to do so!

The Snow Kitten by Nina Warner Hooke? Heartbreakingly, agonizingly, torturously sad. To the point you barely register the happy ending (mainly because your eyes are so swollen with tears that you can't physically read by the time you finally reach it).

They put it on Jackanory - why would they do that? Bizarrely, after I'd suffered through it on there aged about 8, I asked for it as a birthday present. I never got to the point where I could read it without breaking down, and eventually sneaked it into the dustbin.

I'm trying to imagine the author thinking, "What would be a lovely story for young children? Oooh, I know..."

Snakes in water. I can't look at them even on TV. Their horrid heads poking out of the water is just dreadful.

My dad (a Londoner) went to visit my mum when she was in Cheshire taking a course at a college there. Late at night and a bit lost, he drove past a sign that said "To The Edge"...

In a pleasing connection to the beginning of this thread, Alderley Edge is where Alan Garner set some of his books. It definitely has an atmosphere!

An episode of Mork and Mindy when Mork got smaller and smaller and eventually disappeared (or something like that).
Also when Harrison Ford was frozen at the end of The Empire Strikes Back. What an awful end to a film!
And I agree with the person who mentioned Bagpuss. I think it was the mechanical bird that hopped down the steps.
And last of all, I didn’t like it when the contestants got zapped on the vortex - the last round in a kids game show (can’t remember its name but there was an angry pot plant called Uncle 🤷🏻‍♀️)

We like ornamental grasses and last year we bought one called bunny tails with a few plumes and it was very pretty this year there were loads but before they opened fully they had what looked like loads of feelers all over them, they freaked me out. I did not like them but didn't want to say. Luckily dh tripped and managed to flatten it, he was ok but the plant was ruined so it had to go.

Totally agree. My favourite film growing up was The Wizard of Oz, so you can imagine how excited I was to see Return to Oz at the pictures with my friend when I was about 12. I've never been so disappointed in my life!! ha ha

I used to wake up screaming as a child convinced he was in my room! I still can't look at pictures of it now as an adult.
I even had a dream recently that I found his mask and it was covered in flies and maggots. 😱

I don't remember it but thank God we weren't subjected to that - it's sounds hideous. (I was also at primary school in the 80s). Who the heck thought that'd be a good idea?! Some sicko teacher obviously ha ha.

That’s terrible and I really feel for you. I know you could never say because the company would probably sack you and take you to court (even though what you said is true) but I would love to know just who this household name was , because I would instantly boycott them (and I bet other people would too). Companies that treat their employees like that, and it’s worse somehow if they are old ‘established’ names that everyone trusts, should not be able to behave like that. I’ve got a feeling of who it is because of what you mentioned in the post.

What a disgusting, heartless company who put profits above people. And making people work Christmas , is it really that necessary? Just so a few more tins of the stuff can get put on the shelves. People getting injured on the job for moving massive weight around and then not getting proper medical care is also awful. Companies like these need to get named and shamed, when profits take a hit they will finally listen. But it’s how to blow the whistle on them without getting found out because of repercussions. It’s like catch 22.

I remember being super scared by the kids' TV series Century Falls many years ago, anyone remember that? Was really surprised when I googled it not lot long ago and found out it was an early Russell T Davies project.

Also, I still in my 40s don't like the sound of the toilet flushing at night when the house is silent. I have rush back to bed so ghosts don't get me.

They have no business being agile in water the semi aquatic little scrotes .
