To ask what scares you /freaks you out that you would not consider common? Mine is a children’s book!

My 3 year old is obsessed with “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” after having it read to her at preschool, she knows all of the words and we bought it as one of her gifts for her birthday.

We read a book every night at bed, whenever she reaches for this it gives me such bad goosebumps!

I don’t know if it’s the way it’s written, the pictures, I genuinely feel panic when they’re trying to get away from the bear and he’s in the background of the pictures and then at their front door and they’ve forgotten to lock it. I absolutely detest it 🥴 it gives me the right creeps!

This is baring in mind that all I read myself is psychological thrillers and I’ve watched so much true crime I could probably commit the perfect murder 😂 why do I have such a panicky/spooked response to a children’s book fgs!

I've just googled them. If I'd seen one at the beach I wouldn't have had a clue what it was! They have no business being called crabs.

But interestingly, rather than producing white blood cells, their blue blood congels around germs to stop them getting into their bodies. So their blood is used to test if batches of vaccines are "clean" and not contaminated.

Dh blames The Tripods for his dislike of pylons and wind turbines. He says he had a nightmare about them while ill with a high temperature as a child and that when he sees pylons or wind turbines up close, he feels like they’re sneaking up on him

I've remembered another couple, and I apologise if they've been previously mentioned, but whirlpools, I used to have nightmares about them.
Theres also another very specific thing. I had a sort of illustrated encyclopedia for kids, it had various different sections, and in the part about animals, there was an illustration of a basilisk running across water. It looked huge to me, and had big muscly legs... Urgh... I was a lot older when I found out that they are actually really tiny things, in my mind they were man sized! I think I was also worried that if one looked at me, I'd turn to stone, confusion obviously with the mythical basilisk!

I feel like these are getting closer every day. 🤣

If you are old enough to remember Pipkins, Hartley Hare probably triggered this. He was a thing of nightmares. I did love picking as a kid though.

A very modern thing Air fryer. Scared to even turn it on, scares me to death, over covered it over so i dont even see it. It's so stupid and I've no idea why.

I think it’s after visiting a foreign country which had so many everywhere blocking the skyline - it made me feel suffocated.

Know what you mean about pylons. They look like they are marching across the landscape.

Yes , he was a nastly snipppy little Lagomorph .
He looked like his body was made of modelling clay that set solid and rough fur that smelled .
Not a cuddly creature .

OMG. Where are these so I can note to avoid it?!

Oh and me, I have a real fear of baked beans.

Clowns. No idea why, but I just find them so scary.

@oldmoaner You're probably not old enough to remember those TERRIFYING old pressure cookers.. now, they were scary..

The thing about bear hunt is I end up feeling sorry for the bear. Some illustrators seem to do this angle the bear looks lonely at the end. I find it an odd story and a strangely ambiguous message for small children, to have become so popular but- kids love it!

For me its heavy door knocking.
Like a police knock.
There's a programme I watch, Evil Lives Here, I have to forward through the intro. It freaks me out with the knocking.
I can't pin point its origins, no police involvement at home as a kid.

I don't like the feel of any shiny man-made material 🤮
Or real fur not on the animal.

DH thinks they're cute. They're dead behind the eyes and the way they move... eurgh.

I remember an awful radio play we had to listen to at primary school in the 80's. I think it was called "Where the Sun Goes Down" but I've never been able to find it since. It featured two kids in a kind of dystopian future going on a journey west. There was one awful episode where some people were burnt alive in baskets on poles. I'm still terrified thinking about it now, what an awful thing to play to kids. Does anybody remember this or have I dreamt it?!

I remember reading a small childrens book about an abandon need kitten that no one wanted that piled on the emotional agony so much that neither my DC nor me could finish it, even though the end was presumably a happy one. DC was very upset. Idk why they do that sort of thing in children's books should be a censor of some kind!

The Cutty Sark is also chilling. Came across it in the early hours of the morning as a student and honestly thought there had been some kind of time slip. Had no idea it even existed until then!

I really, really don't like otters faces.

I feel sorry for the bear too, pesky kids invade its cave then run away no wonder he was confused !

When I read We're going on a Bear Hunt to my child we spotted a Teddy in one of the pictures so always though that was the bear that they found/found them at the end. Can't say we ever thought it scary.

That aside, lots of things creep me out - holes in things (particularly crumpets) make me shudder, sub-station pylons, and vast expanses of water.
Ironically, I find actual bears scary.
