To ask what scares you /freaks you out that you would not consider common? Mine is a children’s book!

My 3 year old is obsessed with “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” after having it read to her at preschool, she knows all of the words and we bought it as one of her gifts for her birthday.

We read a book every night at bed, whenever she reaches for this it gives me such bad goosebumps!

I don’t know if it’s the way it’s written, the pictures, I genuinely feel panic when they’re trying to get away from the bear and he’s in the background of the pictures and then at their front door and they’ve forgotten to lock it. I absolutely detest it 🥴 it gives me the right creeps!

This is baring in mind that all I read myself is psychological thrillers and I’ve watched so much true crime I could probably commit the perfect murder 😂 why do I have such a panicky/spooked response to a children’s book fgs!

I feel really eurgh when Ronnie gets out of the bath fully clothed and gets into his sleeping bag on the living room floor .

The bottom of the ocean. Ever since I was a child and first comprehended how deep it is, it has always filled me with a massive sense of claustrophobia.

Also the kids book Where The Wild Things Are. Hated it as a child and still freaks me out now.

And lol to all the quicksand references. All that makes me think of is 999 with Michael Burke!

Giant billboards with adverts always freak me out

I used to think trolls lurked under every bridge. I hoped to get across before one jumped on the bridge and barred my way.

DD is right with you re The Wombles even though they were well before her time .

If she says to me "Are we going on the Underground or Overground" I reply "We're Wombling Free" she gives me a hoo'er of a look .

I was terrified of The Tripods! I'm not keen on pylons either and they were a bit like walking pylons so...

Long drives to places I didn’t know scared me also, then I got an automatic and it just seemed to take some of the pressure off. I use google maps on my phone which plays through the CarPlay. I never thought I’d see the day but I’ve since drove to Wales for a hen do (I live 29 miles outside of London) so a fair distance and I drove in the dark to our rented holiday cottage in Dorset just after Christmas with my at the time 11 week old in with me and again drove home the same a week later. My DH took his work van and had 3 year old DD with him so we could fit the travel cot, suitcases, etc as I have a double pram in my boot and not much room for anything else!

I was born in the 60's and my mum from an early age read me The Cat in the Hat by Dr Seuss. It scared me stiff, the idea that this cat thing although I dont think I saw it as a cat could bring Thing 1 and 2 into your house and cause complete chaos. I never told her is scared me stiff because she thought it was a great book. The weird thing was she was incredibly cultured well read and urbane and loathed cartoons Disney and anything American! When I had my children one of the of the first things she bought them was The Cat in The Hat it still scared me as an adult even looking at the cover and I never read it to them!

Sometimes I get this mental image of something coming up the toilet when I am on it and biting me or going in me. Only certain toilets but unfortunately it includes my home one.

I have a lot of things going on at the moment and am getting some intrusive thoughts and this is one of them. 🤣 it is actually a bit scary and it makes me want to stop, even if I haven't finished. But instead I'm making myself stay there for a bit longer than I need to so that it doesn't fall into avoiding the toilet completely. My daughter shouts "you've geen a while are you ok" and I want to say "just proving to myself that thete aren't snakes or people called Eugene down the toilet".

Two things: old cinema organs - there’s something about the look and sound that freaks me out.

Blocked toilets where the water comes up to the rim. Absolutely terrifies me to the extent that I have to run out the bathroom. It’s like I have a fear of the water coming over the top.

Those fish and other creatures that live so deep in the ocean or sea in complete pitch dark they have no pigmentation and no eyes .
I sometimes try to imagine what it would be like to live in the freezing cold with the pressure of all that water and no light .
Luckily I cannot upload a picture but I had a search and they creep me right out .

Has anyone mentioned the film The Polar Express yet?

The hulls of ships both in and out of water

The legs/plinths of a pier - the bit submerged in the water

Can't explain it but i find those two things overwhelmingly uncomfortable - thats the closest way i can describe it

Can’t find the comment to quote it but Salad Fingers! 😂 I was talking about this with my cousin the other day, her daughter was petrified of it. I showed my 3 year old a picture of him and she said “who’s that?” I said it’s a cartoon called Salad Fingers and she replied “oh Mummy I
love him!” 😂 you’re not watching him kiddo! Peter Rabbit, Angelina Ballerina and Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom is where I’m drawing the line 😵‍💫

Oh my DS used to watch Salad Fingers , he whittered on about spoons and rusty kettles .

Car engine starting up. I don't know where this fear came from but I'm always worried that there's a bomb under the car that will explode when I turn the ignition.

I used to be fine with spinny rides, but now that I'm in my 40s they make me feel sick within a minute. When I was young, I never could have imagined that the teacups ride would become my nemesis. My eldest thought it was hilarious to spin our teacup faster and faster and she came very close to being showered in vomit. Never again.

Ooh the intrusive thoughts that a PP mentioned is familiar, and i get a lot of terrible ones in my mind just before I go to sleep. Mainly they involve awful things happening to my lovely DC, which really upsets me (horrible unspeakable things like them dying horribly in an accident or something else scary happening involving pain and distress that I'm unable to stop 😢💔).

I'm often a bit of an anxious person so these thoughts run amok at bedtime when there is nothing else to distract me in the dark 😬😱

Do you know why?

I've got a fear of bombs under my car that occasionally I think about too. It's definitely another one of my intrusive thoughts that I've no idea where it comes from 🤔

Interesting you said about driving to Wales making you more confident driving... my old editor boss knew I hated driving, so he sent me on a business trip to Wales from my home in Bucks... it made me feel terrified but I used my old pal the sat nav, and got there in one piece 😬🤣🤣🤣 God knows how, as it was pouring heavily rain so hard that I could barely see in front of me 😱

I'm sad to.say that younger me 20 years ago felt OK driving to Wales. Middle aged perimenopausal me now would probably chicken out lol 😆
