To un-invite friend from dinner after she sent me message by mistake

Dinnertext · Yesterday 22:10

I’m a long time lurker but have pulled on my big girl pants for my first ever post in AIBU!

We are hosting my friend and her husband on Saturday for dinner. We’ve hosted them before and they’ve always been good company and said they’d enjoyed the food.

We were texting earlier about something unrelated - she clearly had another conversation on the go as she sent a reply which was of no relevance to our conversation.

Her message said:
I can’t do Saturday I am afraid. At (my name)’s for dinner again. That reminds me to stock up on the Pepto for the next morning 😂

Would it be wrong of me to rescind the invite? We go to a lot of effort to host them and feel this is frankly insulting.

The lack of response to your brilliant '?' Leads me to think you called it right.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · Yesterday 22:37

But shit food doesn't cause indigestion. More likely you serve massive portions or serve very rich food.

If I was writing to someone about someone else's shit food I wouldn't write that.

Duvetdayneeded · Yesterday 22:38

It’s an insult!

I have replied already with a ‘?’ - she has read it but not responded yet.

Dying to know what she'll say. If it wasn't a dig, most people would want to clarify right away.. Maybe she's thinking now what to say.
Apologies if this has been asked, but are your meals spicy curries or similar?
I say that as a lover of this type food, but it's the kind that often brings up issues after 😄

**Edited my typos

Does she not just mean because she'll be eating a lot/drinking lots of wine?? Are you sure its a dig? Xx

This. She'll enjoy rich food and booze.

Don't be a dick

harriethoyle · Yesterday 22:40

Bloody rude. Well done you for picking her up on it.

Take is as a joke and don’t get dramatic about it. You could reply saying did you mean to send that to me with lots of 🤣🤣🤣🤣 to defuse any awkwardness. Life doesn’t have to be difficult.

And still host someone so rude?!

Iris1976 · Yesterday 22:41

My take from this is that she’d be overindulging and will need to recuperate after.

JLou08 · Yesterday 22:41

I'd just think she was expecting to eat a big meal in the evening and end up with indigestion. I wouldn't be offended.

This, id just not bother to engage with her again, she’s obviously slagging you off to other people

Read the updates? It says she doesn’t drink on these occasions!

So I’m not sure OP is being a dick?

OP said the friend doesn't drink. And we dont know if OPs food tends to be rich or not.

Imaribenaberry · Yesterday 22:43

i think your response was perfect. I would be offended if someone thought that they would need indigestion remedies after eating my food. She must be mortified. Would you miss the friendship if you fell out over this?

Id take it she makes a pig of herself on the nice food so suffers for it.

Arregaithel · Yesterday 22:44

@echt

"I think you've misunderstood this. Don't pull the invite" Hard disagree from me here.

Pepto-Bismol is an over-the-counter medication used to treat five common digestive issues: nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, and diarrhoea

I think the inference is quite clear despite some posters trying to make light of it.

You must be so upset @Dinnertext, hosting is such a labour of love for your guests, must feel like a slap in the face.

Absolutely do not rescind the invite, but when they arrive at dinner but a bottle of Pepto next to her plate when you serve the food.

Light the fuse and watch her squirm.........

And then later laugh about it. Life if too short and maybe you are a rubbish cook, but does it really matter?

innominate · Yesterday 22:45

Dinnertext · Yesterday 22:13

I have replied already with a ‘?’ - she has read it but not responded yet.

It definitely refers to her getting one of these from your cooking:
Upset stomach
Diarrhoea
Indigestion
Heartburn
Nausea

@Dinnertext it was probably just meant as a stupid joke at your expense but no you can’t really serve her food now. And I highly doubt you want to. Cancel the plans. She’s a friend you could do without.

She doesn’t drink when they are here, she will be driving.

thats cold of her and bitchy any other context to it as to why she would say it ?

canuckup · Yesterday 22:47

Yeah but op will be going to a lot of effort for the dinner

Even if the text meant she'll be overindulging, it's just a bit bitchy

DaysIllRememberAllMyLife · Yesterday 22:48

I've just googled pepto as I'd no idea what it was.

I'm interested in how she replies op.

SqueakyFromme · Yesterday 22:48

@tachetastic that is just so passive aggressive

monkeysox · Yesterday 22:43

No, I don't think so. She doesn't drink, it's the "again" and the laugh emoji - it's got a bitchy quality. Why's she talking about OP to someone else like that anyway?

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what she comes back with. I think the "?" was perfect. She'll be squirming, I think.

Excellent response. Getting arsey won't get you anywhere and your simple response is the best way to get a reasonable answer.

Does she eat the food you give her, or does she leave a lot of it on the plate? If she eats it and keeps coming back, it's reasonable to assume she enjoys it.

TheClocksFast · Yesterday 22:49

I get bad indigestion if I eat in the evening. Nothing to do with what food it is. Hopefully, this is what she means 😬
