Is this racism?

Basically I was at the pub in the pub and nobody was behind the bar.

I was first in line.

An elderly couple come and and then another man who slams his glass down.

When the bar lady asks "who is first"? I replied me.

The elderly couple say "we have been waiting ages".

And the man next says "I didn't see her".

I felt this was due to me being mixed race.
I felt quite intimidated.

I only popped in for a drink whilst OH has the kids.

I feel any shaken up as the only ethnic person in the place.

Don't be silly, @MissBeans83

I am sure that almost everyone on this board agrees that racism is a bad thing.

However, when the definition of racism expands to contain nonsense like the OP's post then that is a bad thing.

It is a bad thing because it dilutes the definition of racism. People find themselves accused of it for absolute nonsense or they read that a cry of false racism can lead to a young white man dying in the street.

When this happens they conclude that the definition of racism has become so wide that everyone will be accused of it at some point or other, so it becomes no big deal. They reasonably say, "So what!"

That will eventually lead to people saying "So what!" when the racism is real and serious.

That is why calling every woman and her dog racist is a bad thing.

You are part of that problem.

The more you over react with cries of Nazis and the ilk-to this non incident of the OP-the less seriously you will be taken.

So, it has started to eat its own tail.

That may lead to the definition being narrowed and made reasonable once again and that is why looking for racism everywhere may be a good thing ,as it will reign it in as people care less and less for being called racist for things like general rudeness or reading a copy of Enid Blyton's Noddy.

So, calm down, get with the programme.

You are part of the problem that will eventually lead to a growing number of people no longer caring about being racist whether they are or not.

Edited

Exactly. It did actually upset me the first few times that happened but now I really don’t care what people like that say. I was called a racist and a fascist the other day for saying that I’d like a conversation about immigration.

The thing is, I know I’m not a racist (or a fascist 🤣 - my kids may disagree when rooms need tidying) and all these people achieve is to demonstrate their complete lack of argument and propensity for bullying.

I feel astounded by the responses here - everything the op described sounds exactly like racism to me (and we can call it micro but it feels pretty bloody big to the victims) Don’t any of you have any compassion? Humanity? Any sense of justice?
My two daughters are not white and they face racism every single day - I’ve been with them countless times when i see people rolling their eyes at my gorgeous girls. They get ignored in shops, looked over in queues. They get shouted at. It is vile. And every one of your sarky comments is part of the racism my girls live with every single day.

Grow up, and learn to be nice

Can you specify exactly where the racist element in OPs interaction was?

If she has assumed racism because they looked at her face then that means she will interpret literally every negative interaction where her face is visible as racism.

Which is quite similar to pp accused the entire population of the U.K. of being racist. Which is also a ludicrous position to hold.

Me and the majority of white people in the UK. Not wanting to become a minority in our country. So extreme!

woah there trigger - I've not read all the posts to this point.

You don't speak for me. I don't a shit what colour skin is in the majority / minority here in the UK - If we are here legally then we have as much right to be here as anyone else.

LuckyHazelFox · Today 18:17

Utter rage bait. So white people can't cheer black footballers when they score goals? Damned if we do damned if we don't. The fact that OP used that particular example shows just who really does want a divide. Bore off.

Everyone is a racist and a fascist if you don't fall in line with the likes of @MissBeans83 dated attitude. Don't get me started on seeing, yet again, the notion that black people can't be racist. For these people who claim be educated, I really do wish they would study the relevant legal position on racism. All very well doing these City and Guilds diversity courses. That makes you a level 2 novice.

No the older couple were moaning to be about the terrible service.

When the bartender finally arrived and asked "who was first?" the older couple said "We have been waiting ages".

I didn't back down and got served first and stared them and the man out to show I wasn't being intimidated

This is the story. You stood your ground. A very normal pub situation. There's always a tosser.

Making a normal interaction like this into a racist incident does racism a disservice. You have told us nothing that suggests racism was involved. Unconscious bias because you were a woman by yourself, perhaps.

IsItSnowing · Today 18:46

Racism, no well they might have been racist but impossible to tell. Just 2 selfish, self absorbed people who wanted to be served first. Unfortunately there’s a lot like them.

Oh I switched off with the her word salads.

It isn't worth your time.

The fact that Pakistani males raped and exploited white girls doesn't change the power balance in our society.

Interesting that you’ve put that in the past tense when it’s still happening all around the country.

And that you ignore the cover up which went on for decades.

If white people are so powerful in the UK how come we have consistently for decades said we don’t want mass immigration but have had it nevertheless, for decades, to the extent we will soon be a minority? That doesn’t seem to indicate huge levels of power to me.
