Is this racism?

Basically I was at the pub in the pub and nobody was behind the bar.

I was first in line.

An elderly couple come and and then another man who slams his glass down.

When the bar lady asks "who is first"? I replied me.

The elderly couple say "we have been waiting ages".

And the man next says "I didn't see her".

I felt this was due to me being mixed race.
I felt quite intimidated.

I only popped in for a drink whilst OH has the kids.

I feel any shaken up as the only ethnic person in the place.

Oh gosh its getting so boring now 😴

DameOfThrones · Yesterday 13:18

If we knew the answer to this, we'd all be off buying lottery tickets since we'd know this Saturday's numbers.

I'm not really understanding the sarcasm here.
In the UK there is a lot of racism going on and there was no need for this.
I felt quite intimidated.

Very childish and unnecessary.

Obviously is a Wetherspoons, says it all really lol.
Im not even from round here and was popping in on the way back home.

No one on here could possibly give you a definitive answer. From another 'ethnic person'.

What about this non event has made you feel 'shaken up?'
Did you not say 'excuse me, I was here first?' If not, why not? I presume you have the gift of voice so just say something..

Needmorelego · Yesterday 13:20

Unlikely to be racism.
Just people in their own world not really noticing who is around them.

You don't understand that internet strangers who weren't there, cannot possibly answer your question?

intrepidpanda · Yesterday 13:21

No. It's someone wanting served first.

DaffodilValley · Yesterday 13:22

I’m white and it happens to me all the time. I honestly don’t think it’s anything to do with your race.

Terribleio · Yesterday 13:22

Bars are just a free for all and it’s a dog eat dog environment. I’d just work on your bar presence.

Raquelos · Yesterday 13:23

SO no one said anything or gave any indication that they cared about your race, but they were a bit rude, and you think that might be related to your race. Well, you might be right, but equally, people are rude to me sometimes, and I am white. Often people are rude because they are, y'know, just rude wankers. Don't take it personally, it's a them problem.

pinkdelight · Yesterday 13:23

They just sound dosy, or possibly drunk. Don't see where ethicity comes into it, unless you mean they literally don't see race.

dairydebris · Yesterday 13:24

0 / 10 for rage bait skills

dancingdeidre · Yesterday 13:25

There could have been racism OP, there is a lot of it about. And/or it could have been everyone being quite selfish. Unpleasant for you either way.

Atkinsondesperation · Yesterday 13:25

I didn’t get served first in the boots queue even though I was there first. It wasn’t a proper queue in a line due to people being unable to queue sometimes, losing their orderly mindset, if they ever had one.
why wasnt I served first? Was the bloke at the till sexist? Or agist? Or racist? Or mentally ill? Or unfocused? Or am I wearing an invisibility cloak? Help me!
it’s a serious issue. Please clarify my grievance, I neeeeed to feel aggrieved.

twocornichons · Yesterday 13:26

Racism is the racists problem not yours. They tend to be sad, unhappy people full of hate and project negativity. I feel sorry for them, it must be a boring existence. It’s not your problem - if you make it so you will be looking for it everywhere and making it your focus. Yes there are racists in the world but their day and lives and full of moaning and hate - I doubt yours is. I say this as a proud mother of mixed race adults - none of my family absorb racism or allow us to stew on whether people are or aren’t as they aren’t ever people who have well informed or worth talking to anyway

ShetlandishMum · Yesterday 13:27

Happens to all of us. It isn't racism.

Iriseee · Yesterday 13:27

Why do you think it's because you were mixed race? (I'm mixed race too and I wouldn't have made this assumption). If he'd said 'Bloody immigrants, coming over and stealing our place in the queue" then YANBU.

Paganpentacle · Yesterday 13:28

Don't think it was mate.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · Yesterday 13:29

I can’t see from what you’ve said that it’s racist, albeit they were very rude.

Are you saying that they thought they should go first because they were white? Couldn’t you just as easily say “well I think it was sexist” because the others were either a man or included a man?

I mean, maybe it was racist but I’m not sure how you’d know that from what you’ve said and observed.

MonsterasEverywhere · Yesterday 13:29

I'm not sure you could say it's racism unless it's something you have experienced there before. Some people are just entitled and don't think they have to abide by the unwritten rules of a pub "queue" (especially some of the regulars in a Wetherspoons).

In the line at the drug store?

It’s a well known story:

What really needs to be addressed here is your drink addiction.
