I mean really, this is just pathetic. No one is believing that KC couldn’t find a spare bed for his son. AIBU to think that as the parent KC needs to get a grip and grow up instead of just fuelling the drama?

Buckingham Palace says Prince Harry will not stay at palace

Royal sources say the Duke of Sussex had not responded to the offer of accommodation at a Royal residence by the deadline last week.

I'm generally not against Harry and Meghan.

In this instance though, if he wanted to stay at the palace I genuinely don't see why he dicked about and failed to respond by Friday.

With regard to what sort of a Dad KCIII is, he is probably rather cool and aloof by many people's standards, and a product of his own rather dysfunctional upbringing.

I don't think QEII and Prince Philip were shining examples of the most marvellous and closely involved parents. They were often quite distant. The children probably spent more time with nannies, governesses and eventually at boarding schools than with their parents. It must have affected how they parented their own children, and some of them made a better fist of it than others.

If Harry comes alone, how many rooms would he need? Who would he come with? Does he bring his US security with him or hire some here?

HRTQueen · 06/07/2026 16:40

Not based on this story

Letting your sons be paraded around in public after their mum dies then sending them off to boarding school yes absolutely awful

No.
As people have said, poor staff - working people like all of us - having to suddenly change plans, childcare, whatever and come in to work at the last minute.

Harry should have confirmed, not said no then changed his mind.
They need security in place
Or perhaps Harry was hoping to catch them out, they hadn't got enough security, then he could complain to the press?
Whatever happened, it's attention seeking nonsense.

Who's them? The King and Queen? I doubt it's them doibg any legwork for the trip.

The staff? Yes, I imagine it can be hardwork, especially when demanding guests can't make up their mind if they're coming or not.

jeffgoldblum · 06/07/2026 16:42

May I present a different opinion?
Harry is a crap son who has done nothing but criticise and abuse his 75 year old father who is suffering from cancer!!
if you were explaining this behaviour to someone and left out who you were talking about, do you really think people would sympathise with a son behaving this way to an elderly father, I doubt it.

IonianNerveGrip · 06/07/2026 16:42

The money's not the issue here, it's the logistics.

The sort of security Harry wants and that it's in our general interest to provide if he's staying at BP requires organisation. Charles can't actually provide it himself, he's not got the expertise to be in charge of protection matters (nothing wrong in that, nor do I) so it's not a question of him simply opening his large wallet.

Edited

I think that's what Harry and his fans expect; it's his right to behave on a whim and the staff just have to scurry around to please him.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 06/07/2026 16:42

You’d think with all the effort the palace have put in to making sure the split is reframed as not the Kings fault, that the King is here for his son whenever he wants to come home, that he was offering a place to stay, the PR team carefully dripping stories to frame Charles as just a hopeful loving grandad who’d love to see his dgc, the staff who’ve worked bloody hard on that will be furious at this fuck up! Of course the room should have been prepared as though harry was staying no matter what, and they knew when he’d be over as they knew about the court case. If Harry then chose to stay at a hotel, they could have framed that as poor Charles, slaughted fatted calf just to be stood up etc. Now the King just looks petty and it highlights he’s got several properties in London that no one is living in.

Poorly handled by the King. They should expect harry to be all over the show.

(whichever way Harrys court case goes, it’s going to be drama from that too)

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 06/07/2026 16:43

How long did he want/not want to stay in BPalace? He’s going to Birmingham at some point but I don’t know if he would be driving back to London the same day or not.

I think I’m more interested in the logistics of it all than I realised.

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 06/07/2026 16:43

Looks to me like a case of FAFO from H. And I think that’s the whole issue from the start. He tests, he pushes and he doesn’t get the outcome he wants/expects, he panics and doubles down. It’s a shame because once upon a time I think he was probably one of the most popular Royals.

Viviennemary · 06/07/2026 16:43

Harry didn't confirm he would be staying by the date given therefore the invitation was withdrawn. There would be quite a lot of staff involved so arrangements would need to be made in advance. He should have just made a decision but he didn't.

I think it's surprising that Harry's supporters really have zero idea about security. I thought that was the big thing he whinged about?

FaceIt · 06/07/2026 16:43

Every parent has a limit including KC.

Harry is a shameful deluded traitor and I’m not surprised he’s had enough of the spoilt brat and his demands.

I don't think Harry's asking for a spare bed though. The King doesn't live at Buckingham Palace. Harry and family were offered rooms/a suite (?) at Buckingham Palace. I imagine getting that ready amounts to more than making the bed. Staff would need to be asked to work, catering and security arranged. If he didn't respond by the date given, it's not unreasonable to say enough's enough and we're not messing the staff around.

Exactly this. We have to remember that Buckingham Palace is an employer, and HR rules come into play.

If staff have booked annual leave or are told they are not rostered on for a shift, you have to give them enough notice of their next working patterns. I'm assuming that would have been why Friday was the deadline, so the HR teams could make sure that the right staff were scheduled - he didn't just ignore it; he actively declined the invitation.

So, Met Office staff were scheduled elsewhere; cleaning staff, security, and general butlers were given leave or sent to different departments (or however else they work).

That couldn't just be undone cos Harry changed his mind. It's basic employment law.

Terribleio · 06/07/2026 16:45

What has this got to do with parenting?

A total non-event.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 06/07/2026 16:45

At least the poor boy has an excellent name for the sequel of his book.

Spare Room.

Bestseller. Awesome. Literary genius. Stunning. Five stars.

Morelovelyandtemperate · 06/07/2026 16:46

The places go to skeleton staff when not in use. Harry wouldn't want to be opening a door for himself, let alone stacking the dishwasher and wiping down his own bathroom sink.
I've often arrived at my parents and had to make my own bed. I can't imagine Harry accepting this graciously.

FenellaFeldman · 06/07/2026 16:47

Why is Harry's inability to organise and communicate somehow the fault of his father?
Has Harry ever taken responsibility for his behaviour? I'm just waiting for the fans to somehow blame William.

Pistachiocake · 06/07/2026 16:47

Well, he cheated on their mum, and the saying goes that the most important thing any parent can do for their child is to love their other parent.
But some people would say that was years ago so forget it.

I’m not a royalist and prefer not to be there!

Fair enough but there are plenty of others on there who aren't royalists.

"Imagine my pain and distress, I turned down accommodation. Then I changed my mind. How dare anyone say I'm at fault! They should have staff and security personnel around the clock, in case I decide to arrive on a whim".

LizzieSiddal · 06/07/2026 16:49

I agree with you @mintleavesandthyme, I don’t think Charles has been the best dad.
His first massive mistake was to cut H’s money off. He’s a billionaire who can well afford ford to bankroll Harry, with the proviso - you do NOT give interviews bout there’s Tod the family. Instead he cuts off his money and H then has to go off and earn cash. Hence the interviews, book and Netflix deals.

A very misjudged decision.

Most parents wouso move heaven and earth to see their grandchildren, Charles obviously doesn’t care.
