To think DH shouldn't be napping in the daytime?

My DH doesn't have work today. I appreciate that we are both tired with a baby and a toddler, but today we got back from toddler group with the toddler asleep. He went for a nap, I tried to join him but the baby was wide awake, did a poo, had to be changed, wanted more milk. DH is overweight but currently on a 'lifestyle change' meaning he's cutting most sugar out of his diet and does exercises in the evening (during ad breaks). Because I'm awake anyway, I've looked up whether daytime naps hinder weight loss and lo and behold, they do.

AIBU to think DH should stay awake from when he gets up until bedtime?

One nap isn’t going to hurt. Yabu.

oviraptor21 · 06/07/2026 14:55

A young healthy person who is not significantly overworked should not need to nap during the day. He's doing it to avoid looking after the kids.
Make sure he takes an equivalent amount of time looking after the kids while you get some 'me' time.

FrenchandSaunders · 06/07/2026 14:57

Cutting out the sugar is going to make him tired to begin with, until he's used to it. I'm not a fan of day time naps ... feels elderly to me 😁, and I'm not young!

Coconutter24 · 06/07/2026 14:58

Did he stay up to watch football?

UpDownAllAround1 · 06/07/2026 14:58

Maybe he watched the World Cup this morning

How do they hinder weight loss? Lack of sleep plays an issue in weight control - being tired makes you hungrier especially for sugary carbs and makes it harder to move much. So being well rested is likely to help overall with weight management.

Waheymum · 06/07/2026 15:01

No, he hates football.

I don't follow this..How he deals with weight loss - is that the issue ? It seems as though you could be jealous, in which case can't you agree to both have a nap depending who can supervise your child ?

MyMilchick · 06/07/2026 15:05

You should have just had your turn after he woke up. Naps are lovely

ToadRage · 06/07/2026 15:10

Sometimes i need naps. I have a muscular condition and I get very tired. I try not to nap everyday, but if I need to I need to.

gotmyselfintoapickle · 06/07/2026 15:11

Obviously you can't dictate whether your husband naps. He's not your child.

He needs to be considerate of you because you have joint children to look after but him going when the toddler is asleep seems sensible. Obviously you too should have the opportunity to nap if you wish or do anything else you fancy.

Winefride · 06/07/2026 15:12

Just take turns napping. Maybe he doesn't sleep well at night?

CalmWriter · 06/07/2026 15:13

You wanted to join him but also think he shouldn’t take naps? Make your mind up OP.

You can either go for a nap when he wakes up or you can stay up til bedtime, especially if you’re trying to lose those extra post pregnancy pounds.

My mum is like this. She sleeps badly at night but refuses to nap, I think she's too proud 😂

longhotsummer2026 · 06/07/2026 15:14

Has he had his thyroid checked? Especially as he is overweight and fatigued.

Lomonald · 06/07/2026 15:15

Why don't you have a nap when he gets up ? Did your really waste your time googiling if naps make "you" fat ?

BillieWiper · 06/07/2026 15:15

Of course being asleep doesn't hinder weight loss?! You're not eating anything are you? Sleep is good for you.

If he's withdrawing from sugar he probably does feel a bit knackered.

But napping during the day is perfectly fine. As long as you can do so as well when he's awake caring for baby or baby is asleep.

In hot countries people do have rest periods in the middle of the day and then stay up later when the weather is cooler. And it's very hot today.

FeliciaFancybottom · 06/07/2026 15:18

I know lots of adults who nap during the day. I'm honestly envious because naps make me feel like death warmed up.

Yogafiend · 06/07/2026 15:19

Mmmhh… napping in itself won’t hinder weight loss! I nap quite often because I have a weird schedule. When I’m tired it’s harder to resist carbs and sweats and overall unhealthy stuff so napping can be helpful to reset. If he’s cut out sugar he’s probably getting lower energy until his body adjusts.

Came to say this, you also wanted a nap but couldn’t. So if you’d have one are daytime naps ok?
I am perfectly healthy and get plenty of sleep but if I lay down in the day and close my eyes, I can also have a nap…

clearlyy · 06/07/2026 15:19

I love a nap during the day. YABU.

thisfilmisboring123 · 06/07/2026 15:21

I can’t work out what your issue is?

Is it because he left you to look after the kids alone/because it meant you couldn’t nap (in which case, surely that’s a little hypocritical) or you think it’s hindering his weight loss?

Surely the cutting out sugars will be affecting his energy levels?

Honeyhonayboo · 06/07/2026 15:21

With a baby and a toddler there were plenty of times I napped.
Other than making sure you have equal chances to have a break or rest you are being unreasonable to just take an issue with a nap in itself.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/07/2026 15:21

I don’t think the problem is with him napping.

I think the problem is that you haven’t been able to have a nap that you wanted.

If you’re both at home today, you should both get a turn to catch up on sleep.

Lomonald · 06/07/2026 15:22

There is lots of health benefits to napping maybe google that.
