To say the anti-football lot need to calm down a little?

I didn’t stay up for the match because there was no way to make it work with my job, but if I could’ve I would’ve.

I can’t understand the actual visceral anger on here about it? It’s one night - kids won’t drop dead at school, workplaces won’t fail, but a lot of people will have just had a brilliant night.

I just don’t understand why some people can’t accept that others enjoy other things and it doesn’t need to be a big deal?

I'm more interested in seeing how Arthur Fery will do in Wimbledon this week. I won't get time off to watch that as it is only football fans that gets special treatment.

I didn't watch the match, I went to bed and slept. I don't care about the football world cup. Not everyone is coming together. What is it football fans just don't understand.

They'll be the usual calls for a bank holiday if England win soon. I remember when England won the Rugby World Cup and where I was, and no we didn't get a bank holiday.

That’s because tennis isn’t the national sport?

What is a "national sport" ? Is it an official thing?

There isn't one.

I don't watch football but am pleased so many people enjoy it. What I really object to, though, is people following a night-time match with a sickie. Either use annual leave or go in to work! Why on earth should the rest of us work extra hard covering your shift just because you chose to stay up late?
There's having fun and then there's taking the piss.

I think as long as those who made the decision to stay up were sensible with it (drive safely on the roads today/turn up for work if they hadn’t booked it off) etc.

Seems like it was a great match and sounds like they did us proud!

Alondra · Today 07:54

Much of the visceral anger about football is acknowleging that it is corrupt at the higher levels. Nothing to do with fans, the game or the love for football.

I love football. I've loved since my father took me to Santiago Bernabeu to watch a Real Madrid match when I was 4 y.o. Unfortunately a lot has changed since then (I'm 66) and today's game is worth billions of dollars on the hands of a corrupt establishment impossible to get rid off, much like in politics. They control the game.

All we can do is chear for our country and club colours and acknowledge that our feelings have little to do with football business.

Maybe not but you’re a really nasty
piece of work. And I say that as someone who is rooting for the team to do well.

Your attitude is awful. Are you a teen who has been allowed the day off and now you’re bored? Also you should do some research into domestic violence statistics around the World Cup before you moan on about other people not being excited. For some people, football has real consequences. And no, football isn’t the root cause of domestic violence and shouldn’t take the blame, but it exacerbates the situation for some women who will be very frightened during these few weeks.

Grow up. You aren’t doing football fans any favours and you’re embarrassing yourself.

Indeed. It’s very hard to support the World Cup when FIFA are who they are, and this World Cup has seen some awful activity.

It’s the end of term. They’re not doing anything, I know that from my niece who has spent the last week doing absolutely naff all.

I don’t have kids, but this is what I mean. It’s not irresponsible to let your kids watch the football, they won’t die from one day of less sleep and the school won’t burn down!

Your niece is definitely not doing naff all - if you believe everything kids tell you, then you wouldn’t survive long 🙄. I was with you at your opening post but now you’re just coming across as incredibly unpleasant and rude.

Oh no! One day of a little less watching films at the end of term! However will they cope! Genuinely I don’t know whats gone wrong in this country lately

Speaking of rudeness... what a nasty petty comment to make to a teacher.

@nowillpowernoproblem I was with you to an extent on the general sentiment of your first post but when people are replying with genuine impacts you’re being excessively dismissive.

Your comment to the poster about her birth experience is absolutely awful - dismissing a woman by calling her ‘love’ is misogynistic. I was going to say it was internalised misogyny but on further reading I think you’re probably a man. I’m shocked that you then doubled down on your comment rather than apologising!

@MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned Im so sorry to hear about your experience.

Schools these days don’t spend days (or weeks, as it would be at this point) watching films at the end of term. The curriculum is taught until pretty close to the end and then the last few days in summer might be trips and structured activities (the last day or so in other terms). If your niece’s school wasn’t doing anything as long as three weeks before the end of term then that’s concerning and something may be going wrong in that school.

The other poster who works in healthcare was making a valid point as well - people should’ve book annual leave but if not everyone has and some call in sick, there will be an impact.

It’s true though. It’s the end of term. The learning is done. The kids will not suffer for one day where a few of them are tired.

Perhaps it's you who needs to unclench a little and realise this change happened with very little notice AND our kids don't go to school in our borough so relying on friends is a little bit difficult when expecting them to do a school run and they too have to get to work and sort their own childcare or school run ?

I'm unclenched? I think it's a good thing.

If they did this every week you'd have a point.

It was a one off. Try to enjoy lighthearted events, we don't get many.

Now obviously we don't know if they'll progress further but if they do, whatever time the match is your dc will probably want to watch that too.

WTF are you on about. Are you a man?

That was my suspicion. No woman (or at least no woman who's given birth) would be that twattish about something like that! I didn't even go into labour when I had DS (I was booked in for a c section,) but I can show some fucking empathy.

@MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned I'm sorry you had to go through that and I'm glad you were both okay. 💐 That must have been very frightening.

It's the parents isn't it. Kids manage fine after one disrupted nights sleep.

But it's not light hearted given many of my service users who are some of the most vulnerable members of our communities will have experienced significant levels of violence, and then we will be picking up additional rough sleepers this week due to the increase in DV.

Perhaps you don't see those who experience homelessness as humans if you find this light-hearted.

DappledThings · Today 08:04

DS got a full night's sleep, got up, watched 20 minutes of highlights without knowing the score and has gone off to Breakfast Club absolutely elated and just as excited had he stayed up for hours but without the exhaustion. An absolute win win.

Except for DD who got Mexico in the class sweepstake and was more bothered about that than England winning.

The learning definitely isn’t ‘done’. And it isn’t the end of term. That’s still two weeks away. But do keep dismissing what every teacher on here is telling you.

DozyCrow · Today 08:07

I'm not a real football fan, but I watch some of the England matches. I didn't stay up last night as I was too tired. They actually play better when I don't watch - I think I put the mockers on them when I watch 😂

I am however fed up with my mum moaning on and on about 'all the football on the telly, what about me'. Well, maybe that's because it's the World Cup mum, and the mainstream channels are obviously going to show matches rather than 1940s black and white film re-runs for little old ladies. I suggest she tries one of the 300 other Freeview channels she has access to but she'd rather moan about Eastenders being relegated to BBC3.

You’ve said you don’t have kids, even those who do have kids haven’t got a clue what goes on in schools because <newsflash> kids don’t tell them 🙄. So how are you the font of all knowledge?
