To say the anti-football lot need to calm down a little?

I didn’t stay up for the match because there was no way to make it work with my job, but if I could’ve I would’ve.

I can’t understand the actual visceral anger on here about it? It’s one night - kids won’t drop dead at school, workplaces won’t fail, but a lot of people will have just had a brilliant night.

I just don’t understand why some people can’t accept that others enjoy other things and it doesn’t need to be a big deal?

It's a big deal if 1/2 your college book AL (fine) and the other half call in sick (not fine).

I watched it, just got in and am now going to start work. Just don't give it head space and enjoy the game/life without the unnecessary noise. That's what I have learnt to do. If I watched this world cup with twitter on in the background, for example, it would be under a cloud of immense hatred for England, of racism and of abusive language towards anyone possible, however I don't. I go to the pub, have a brilliant laugh, and ignore the rest. Mostly life is good this way.

I work in healthcare. I just tell the patient to hold on a bit longer as my colleagues enjoyed the football last night and called in sick. I will also tell them that their the world won't crash and burn if less gets done.

Then half your colleagues haven’t booked AL, have they? It has to be confirmed 6 weeks in advance!

I’m not anti football (in fact I like watching football). But I do resent the amount of time, attention and conversation which you are expected to expend upon it.

Its hard for a football lover to understand how all encompassing it can be during a tournament if you either don’t like it or just don’t care all that much. It can become very draining and quite alienating when its all other people want to talk about and you just want to get away and talk about something else for a bit.

Also I find the tribalism around club football ugly and childish. Grown men fighting/arguing over it is contemptible.

I think some of us just wish sometimes there was a way to get away from it for a bit.

I gave birth during a previous world cup and the midwives did indeed think it was absolutely fine to not really give any care while the England match was on! Once it was over someone finally examined me, as I'd been asking for for the last two hours - turned out I was crowning.

Football isn’t my bag, baby, but even I enjoy a bit of the World Cup (although not at 1am). I am with you, it’s a one off thing this year.

I was at work a previous World Cup and I remember those of us bit fussed letting those who were take an afternoon here and there to watch in the kitchen together. The day after those of us who covered had a turn.

A PP is in a responsible medical role, clearly that’s different, but for most of us we can flex and be kind to each other and let those who really care enjoy it. And let kids nap on their desks 🙈

As a teacher no they won't drop dead but they will be really tired and more likely to have behaviours which disrupt the learning of others. If you kept them up, keep them off school for the sake of the rest of us. Thanks.

I didn’t stay up to watch it either because I’m 35 weeks pregnant and have a toddler up at 6am so my body said “absolutely the fuck not” (I can’t even stay awake through a regular day without a nap atm 🤣but I woke up periodically to check the score. I would have loved to have been able to stay up and watch it as it looked like a brilliant game! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Ignorant and unnecessary teacher bashing. I can assure you schools are not 'watching films', there's still over two weeks of term left.

Why should those who couldn't care less about football suffer because some do. As I said if you want to be irresponsible and disrupt your child's sleep for football at least have the ownership to keep them off the next day.

Thousands of us, (including me) stayed up to watch it, enjoyed it and are now up ready to go to work

It’s the end of term. They’re not doing anything, I know that from my niece who has spent the last week doing absolutely naff all.

I don’t have kids, but this is what I mean. It’s not irresponsible to let your kids watch the football, they won’t die from one day of less sleep and the school won’t burn down!

My kids are 14 and 16 and one is in school today.

14 year old is in school and wouldn't dream of displaying disruptive behaviours just cos he's tired.

He's going in as normal, just as I'm going to work as normal. He asked for the day off and I said no, he needs to crack on as normal, as thats a logical consequence of wanting to watch the football at 2am

Its one night of limited sleep...kids will cope, as will adults

I didn't get compensation - thankfully, both me and DS were absolutely fine. He was born 25 minutes after they finally checked me.

I did have a birth debriefing when I still felt so upset/traumatised by it three months later and in that briefing session the senior midwife agreed that my care had been seriously below standard. They were supposed to be 'learning lessons' - if you look at the state of maternity services I'm not sure they did, no lessons have been learned from much more serious incidents.

I did feel it, that was the point, I was crying and desperate in a triage ward for two hours and ignored while all the staff sat around the tv.

Frankly in healthcare these days, we’re all used to the wait….

I've worked in healthcare for nearly 30 years so 7 world cups and there's always people wittering on 'I bet so and so will ring in sick' 'oh it'll be hell today with people tired from watching the footie'.

Usually the same people who claim to have not had time for a piss at work since the 90s but spend plenty of time chatting. Usually just complaining about how busy they allegedly are.

Never experienced anyone ringing in sick after the footie or not doing their job properly.

Oh sure we aren't doing anything. Nothing at all. In fact it's a piece of piss we just chuck a couple of movies on and they all totally pay attention for those and then we order some dominoes!

Get a life. This is not reality. As for calling another woman 'love' and talking about her birth like that
