To say the anti-football lot need to calm down a little?

I didn’t stay up for the match because there was no way to make it work with my job, but if I could’ve I would’ve.

I can’t understand the actual visceral anger on here about it? It’s one night - kids won’t drop dead at school, workplaces won’t fail, but a lot of people will have just had a brilliant night.

I just don’t understand why some people can’t accept that others enjoy other things and it doesn’t need to be a big deal?

Exactly.

It’s exactly what the country needed, after a few really shit years. Seeing everyone come together to celebrate and be happy is so lovely. It’s such a nice reminder that there is more in this country that unites us than divides us.

But everyone hasn't come together - people are pulling sickies, there was increases in violence, there are increases in drink driving this morning etc etc

Just because you haven't witnessed it doesn't negate the years of research and science that demonstrate all these things happen ...

didgeridid · Today 07:32

For someone who doesn't want to make a big deal, you're making a big deal 😅 people are also allowed to not let their kids stay up till 1am, people are allowed to be annoyed that their GP appointment is running late or their colleagues aren't pulling their weight.

category12 · Today 07:32

It's a massive tournament that brings patriotism in every country.

Is that a good thing?

It’s the end of term. They’re not doing anything, I know that from my niece who has spent the last week doing absolutely naff all.

I don’t have kids, but this is what I mean. It’s not irresponsible to let your kids watch the football, they won’t die from one day of less sleep and the school won’t burn down!

Thats your nieces school. I am a teacher, my school and both my dc school are full lessons for everything. I don't have time for the kids to watch films as we have to fit in all the curriculum. The last day sure we'll play games and watch films but not until then.

I was with you regarding the football but a couple of comments you've made are pretty nasty. Your first about the school and the second about the lady being in active labour. Sadly that does happen in the labour ward whether England are playing or not

Thepeopleversuswork · Today 07:33

KatiePricesKnickers · Today 07:27

How many of these ‘Oh Tarquin needs 10 hours uninterrupted sleep to function, I’m not letting him watch football’ don’t think twice about dragging the kids out of bed at 2am to catch a 6am flight for a holiday?

Edited

But holidays are more important than football for some of us. Is that not allowed? Sorry but my kid will remember a holiday for a lifetime, not so much a football match.

You don’t have to be called Tarquin to be naused out by all the fuss and drama over a fairly routine football game.

ClairDeLaLune · Today 07:33

nowillpowernoproblem · Today 06:32

Then half your colleagues haven’t booked AL, have they? It has to be confirmed 6 weeks in advance!

Also nasty, and showing a lack of reading comprehension. She said sick leave not AL.

Because I find it very hard to believe a woman was in active labour and the midwives shrugged their shoulders and turned back to the football.

Really? That happened to me and there wasn’t even a special sports game
taking place. I think you need to wind your neck in and not be so reactive to comments that don’t suit your narrative!

hahabahbag · Today 07:34

Football or any other sport is a hobby, fine, but your hobby shouldn’t be interfering with your job or studying. My dh is currently watching the match as live on bbc2, far more sensible than middle of the night. If I still had school age kids I’d have had them watch the match at 6am before school. Me - don’t like football really, I’d watch a bit if at a reasonable hour but I’d rather lie in bed

I’m with you in general, people need to chill out but you’re bang out of order most teachers are still working and might let them have a fun last few days which is still a couple weeks ago.

sorry your nieces school is garbage but most aren’t! You can make your point without being a dick about a profession that gets a lot of stick as it is! And the teacher just said keep them off if they’ve been up till 4/5 hardly a crazy idea!

I gave birth during a previous world cup and the midwives did indeed think it was absolutely fine to not really give any care while the England match was on! Once it was over someone finally examined me, as I'd been asking for for the last two hours - turned out I was crowning.

That's absolutely disgusting
I hope you complained

I used to always work world cup days to allow colleagues to book the time off

If the time is booked, fine. Calling in sick because your entire personality is football, but you didn't plan ahead? Not fine.

Lugol · Today 07:35

Perfect28 · Today 06:40

Ignorant and unnecessary teacher bashing. I can assure you schools are not 'watching films', there's still over two weeks of term left.

Why should those who couldn't care less about football suffer because some do. As I said if you want to be irresponsible and disrupt your child's sleep for football at least have the ownership to keep them off the next day.

I don't think OP is aware of how stupid they're coming off.

oatsotoga · Today 07:37

I let my DS 16 watch, he's finished GCSEs and off for an extended summer. I did ask that be went to bed for a few hours first and then got up to watch but only because we are away at the moment and be has to be up by 9am packing etc.
I'm not remotely interested in football, I find all the hype annoying and the assumption that the whole country will get behind the team frustrating. Our fans act terribly most of the time, there are always fights and appalling behaviour, upticks in domestic violence etc. Agree with a PP it would be nice and far less grating if any other sport got the same attention.

Goodmorningeveryone26 · Today 07:37

nowillpowernoproblem · Today 06:53

Aye, and it’s cos they were all sat around watching the football? Sure

Blimey, OP. I was with you til you started having a go at this poster. Don’t call someone a liar because their experience disagrees with your opinion. That’s just being a dick

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · Today 07:37

I really like football but I didn’t watch it because I have responsibilities.

I do have some sleep problems so starting from a baseline of always being very tired so perhaps might have watched it if I spent any of the rest of my life feeling refreshed…

This is exactly the dramatic bullshit that makes people think football fans are ridiculous "It's what the country needed" 🙄 don't be dramatic! The country needs an economic boost or a few million nurses not a bloody football game.

It's so childish. Just like the silly clap backs you keep posting to everyone trying to explain why football fans are annoying and the disgusting derogatory way you are mocking a woman who had a traumatic birth experience. You're talking about things you've never experienced (birth, how much being tired impacts young children's behaviour) and making yourself look stupid. You're actually behaving like a stupid football fan that everyone moans about, it would be funny if it wasn't so embarrassing.

Thanks. To be fair, I think the OP says she doesn't have children - I think it does surprise a lot of people who haven't been through it how awful maternity care can be (though you'd think some of the recent reports would perhaps have raised awareness a bit). Mine is by no means the worst case of maternity care I know - I know women left it much worse circumstances for much longer - but the constant insistence by staff that the football was very important and my husband was being quite annoying by trying to get them to care for me because it was the (hushed tones) world cup semi-final does still rankle. (Any real football fans will now be able to tell when DS's birthday is and how old he's about to turn!)

Hereisalittleteapot · Today 07:40

I am guessing you have never stood in front of 30 tired grumpy children who have barely slept. Their parents let them stay up and then send them to school for the teachers to deal with. I expect tempers exploding, tears, falling out and very little work to be possible.

Why should the children who didn't stay up have to be ignored because irresponsible parents dump tired children not ready to learn on me.

I'm more interested in seeing how Arthur Fery will do in Wimbledon this week. I won't get time off to watch that as it is only football fans that gets special treatment.

I didn't watch the match, I went to bed and slept. I don't care about the football world cup. Not everyone is coming together. What is it football fans just don't understand.

They'll be the usual calls for a bank holiday if England win soon. I remember when England won the Rugby World Cup and where I was, and no we didn't get a bank holiday.

Wordsmithery · Today 07:41

@Ewock Well said. OP's original post wasn't unreasonable (in my opinion) but their later comments about the lady in labour were horrible. And they don't seem to like people disagreeing with them either.
Maybe a lack of sleep doesn't suit them...

I agree.

A bit of football is not going to solve the problems in the country!

(Reversing something beginning with “B” is the first thing that’s going to help!)

Won’t be just today it affects them, it will last a few days until they finally get back to their usual bedtime routine.

Pineapplewhip · Today 07:42

I think it depends on how you are usually treated that impacts peoples opinions.

If your colleagues were misogynistic dicks, who have an attitude everytime you take time off sick, or you have to look after sick kids, but they're happy to come in late or pull a sickie because "its football lads!?" - that would piss me off!

Same when secondary schools let kids come in at 11.30am - but get all snippy when they arrive late due to more genuine reasons.

ParadoxicallySurviving · Today 07:43

I voted you were NBU until you disparaged the poster’s birth story and belittled teaching I general.

You confess you haven’t any children so how the fuck do you know what goes on in labour wards or in schools? You have no fucking idea and coming across as a total arsehole.

How dare you say that about PP’s experience of being left whilst giving birth.

LilacHam · Today 07:43

Spottyness · Today 07:16

A big deal to you and to many people, but not everyone (and an incorrect fact but hey ho). I don’t know why football fans get so uppity about people who aren’t football fans. Enjoy your hobby, stay out for a big game, book the next day off, have fun, don’t worry about those of us who aren’t football fans.

It's not that fans get uppity about people who aren't football fans or worry about them, it's the constant moaning about the football that annoys.

The probably 50 plus threads on MN recently complaining about it usually complaining that people like it and find it an important event.

That doesn't happen about any other sporting event so that's why it stands out.

I'm not a big football fan but understand the significance of the WC to many, many people. I equate it to Christmas, which I am a big fan of. Which also doesn't happen that often and some people like it and some people don't.

But for the weeks before it there's a constant stream of threads on MN complaining about shops getting Xmas stuff too early, complaining about people putting decorations up too early, complaining about people buying Xmas bedding, complaining about Xmas jumper days, complaining about North pole breakfasts, elf on the shelf or Xmas eve boxes, complaining that its just one day so why all the bloody fuss and on and on.

And the WC attracts a similar stream of complaints for no other reason than some people don't care about it and seem unreasonably annoyed that others do.

RubyEspadrilles · Today 07:43

I voted YANBU initially but having seen your.further.comments and some of those who agree with you, I have changed my mind and my vote!
