To say the anti-football lot need to calm down a little?

I didn’t stay up for the match because there was no way to make it work with my job, but if I could’ve I would’ve.

I can’t understand the actual visceral anger on here about it? It’s one night - kids won’t drop dead at school, workplaces won’t fail, but a lot of people will have just had a brilliant night.

I just don’t understand why some people can’t accept that others enjoy other things and it doesn’t need to be a big deal?

Yeah, it's a funny thing, nobody can possibly take time off work when school closes early or for the day due to the heatwave, but all of a sudden its no Biggie to chuck a sickie or get time off.

Hmmm.

Exactly this - my partner is a medic and he's had to delay his start this morning as school have decided to open an hour later.

It was either me leading a cities outreach team or him and we decided it was more important I go in

And yes we have child care before school but we nanny share with a family and so they would have been their nanny down for two hours if one of us didn't take time off.

It's a freaking sports game and we are already facing huge juggling of childcare for the next heatwave (and seriously considering a different school at this stage as well...)

Sartre · Today 07:22

It’s an issue if people are going to pull sickies today (as I suspect many will). Not the end of the world to miss one school day obviously but I’m amazed kids could stay up till 4am. It will send their sleep schedules haywire if they sleep during the day today. Anyway not my kids so I don’t have to deal with it.

BathersOnTheLine · Today 07:22

Some people will stay up all night, perhaps go to the pub to watch football from a bar stool with a beer at 3am ........but it's the people who quietly go to bed at 11pm and have a good kip who need to stay calm.

Righto.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · Today 07:23

YANBU. Not a football fan, didn't watch it but good for them.

A big deal to you and to many people, but not everyone (and an incorrect fact but hey ho). I don’t know why football fans get so uppity about people who aren’t football fans. Enjoy your hobby, stay out for a big game, book the next day off, have fun, don’t worry about those of us who aren’t football fans.

It’s not an incorrect fact.

But this was actually history - we’re the first team in history to beat Mexico at the Azteca in a World Cup. That’s a pretty big deal.

No it isn't
Winning the world cup in 66 was a big deal.

Now stop being nasty to anyone with a different opinion to you and get on with your day.

Whether he's a medic or you lead a cities outreach team is irrelevant. You have kids and sometimes things change. Try and work on a network so friends and family can all pitch in if needs be.

It isn't just a 'freaking sports game'. It's a massive tournament that brings patriotism in every country. It's a nice thing! I don't watch footie, I've no idea who won what leagues but when it's England I watch.

You and your dh need to unclench a little bit and try and have fun with your dc at times like this.

KatiePricesKnickers · Today 07:27

How many of these ‘Oh Tarquin needs 10 hours uninterrupted sleep to function, I’m not letting him watch football’ don’t think twice about dragging the kids out of bed at 2am to catch a 6am flight for a holiday?

I don’t understand the people saying that kids won’t remember waking up in the night to watch the match. I remember being about 10 and living abroad when my dad woke us up in the night to watch England vs Brazil in the World Cup - it was so exciting (despite losing!) and we still talk about it now!

Yes, I don't know anything about football and didn't watch this one (didn't even realise it was special compared to any of the other matches). Although my husband did excitedly wake me up at 4am to give me the good news.

But when my sons are 10yo and really excited about staying up for something I will make an effort for them and try to be excited! Some things are once in a lifetime because you're only that particular age once with that particular kind of excitement and it's not quite the same when you're older.

Perhaps some people who live near sports pubs have history with the noise from big outdoor screen/vomit/noise/antisocial behaviour stuff.

Ear plugs exist for a reason

And you didn’t feel it before? Okay love, that definitely happened. How much did you get in compensation after your complaint?

Why the need for sarcasm, OP?

They don't help with the aftermath of bottles put in hedges, cans thrown down vomit etc.

Exactly.

It’s exactly what the country needed, after a few really shit years. Seeing everyone come together to celebrate and be happy is so lovely. It’s such a nice reminder that there is more in this country that unites us than divides us.

Because I find it very hard to believe a woman was in active labour and the midwives shrugged their shoulders and turned back to the football.

Perhaps it's you who needs to unclench a little and realise this change happened with very little notice AND our kids don't go to school in our borough so relying on friends is a little bit difficult when expecting them to do a school run and they too have to get to work and sort their own childcare or school run ?

Only the football fans are coming together. Many people think it's just football.

Getting up early to fall asleep again in the car or on the plane and not have to do anything for the rest of the day other than sit about and relax isn't really comparable to needing to do a 7 hour school day.
