To really hate seeing bare chested men in the street?

It doesn't matter if they're in good shape or not, in fact they very well formed ones almost make it worse. It's not about whether it's nice to look at or not, but it feels uncomfortable, whether subconcious or not, it seems designed to demonstrate male dominance and is all a bit chest beating, like gorillas in the zoo!

Agreed. Should be "taps oan" for all as far as I am concerned.

Lexy2345 · 29/06/2026 11:04

I live near the coast and when out walking my dog, I encountered several male hikers, all naked from the waist up. It's not a good look. I found it somewhat intimidating and I'm not sure why. I'm not intimidated by men in general.

KierkegaardsUnderpants · 29/06/2026 11:07

It’s repulsive. I was just in Tesco and the security guard asked a specimen to put his top on. Thankfully.

Apfelkuchen · 29/06/2026 11:17

I agree, it’s unnecessary and undignified.

B9waiting · 29/06/2026 11:19

I agree - I hate it. I’m not afraid of men generally, however it does feel like there is something quite aggressive & intimidating about guys with no tops on walking around.

countrygirl99 · 29/06/2026 11:20

And yet if someone posts complaining about teeny weeny shorts, PJs in Tesco, visible bras or whatever they get roundly told women have the right to wear whatever they want, wherever they want. Does this not apply to men as well?

MyTrivia · 29/06/2026 11:20

YANBU - it feels very aggressive.

Did you read my OP? I don't think anyone is finding teenage girls in tiny shorts threatenting or a demonstration of dominance. Personally I wouldn't do that either but for entirely different reasons.

Exactly.

UltimateSloth · 29/06/2026 11:23

It is slightly indecent clothing in mixed company, apart from on the beach or swimming in the same way as a woman isn't properly dressed going onto Tesco in a bikini.

Men seem to think their bodies aren't sexual apart from their genitals, but they absolutely are and it can be a bit disconcerting to see a man's chest in a location where you should be properly dressed.

Maybe they are just hot. Why exactly do you find a man more scarey without a shirt? What is it about a shirt that makes them less scarey.

Beachtastic · 29/06/2026 11:24

I don't mind it at all, as long as they're not in shops/restaurants/whatever.

Girls walk around with their bums showing, and more.

LindorDoubleChoc · 29/06/2026 11:24

Yanbu. I am pretty intolerant of all blatant displays of flesh unless at the pool or the beach. Applies to women as well.

PashaMinaMio · 29/06/2026 11:25

In the USA I’ve seen signs in store windows “Shirt & shoes required.”
Just that. No “thank you for your cooperation” crap. A hard and fast request.

Maybe we need to do something similar over here?

I’m not intimidated by men, far from it, but I just don’t want to see their warts and all bodies however well toned, in the High Street of my local shops.

ShaggedMen · 29/06/2026 11:26

But if this was about girls wearing next to nothing in public everyone would say YABU and "don't look".

fatphalange · 29/06/2026 11:26

I agree but I discovered another reason to dislike these knuckle-dragging exhibitionists plodding around in public last week. One of them flicked sweat on to me as I was walking past 🤮 …which is probably why they aren’t supposed to be allowed in shops.

TheChosenTwo · 29/06/2026 11:27

Maybe I live in a bubble or with my head in the sand but I honestly never see this! At the beach, sure. Dh in the garden, daily. Popped round to my neighbors and her husband was in the garden with his top off, no problem.
But not walking down the street!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 29/06/2026 11:28

Outside in the street especially if toned I really couldn’t care less.

MyGirlJ · 29/06/2026 11:29

I agree, and so does my 7yr old DD. We we're in Mcdonalds on Saturday evening and a topless man was waiting for his order. DD doesn't have a filter in the slightest, and on the way back from the getting some napkins said to the man "you should have a top on, people don't want to see that when they're eating!" I nearly died, but she's not wrong.

Revolting. And agree with OP the gym fit ones are almost worse. Put a top on, I don’t care if your tan isn’t even.

Divebar2021 · 29/06/2026 11:33

There’s a fitness influencer on SM and he seems very lovely but he runs with his top off and I really hate it. I don’t even know what I hate about it. I’ve also seen Hyrox videos with absolute swarms of men running topless and of course they all have fantastic physiques and it’s makes me 🤢. I think
its sending some signal … maybe dominance as you say.

HumberSquid · 29/06/2026 11:36

Lol so women can wear what they like and cover as much or as little of their bodies as they wish but men's clothing needs to be regulated.

How about women get their own house in order about what's acceptable and not?

SerendipityJane · 29/06/2026 11:37

I wonder what the logical conclusion of the OP mandating a dress code for one sex might be ?

wishingonastar101 · 29/06/2026 11:39

It's the fat, red, bald builders near us! Surely health and Safty says you need a t shirt on when roofing?

Beamsss · 29/06/2026 11:41

Fgs the situation is entirely different for men/women. It's the whole men are afraid women will laugh at them, women are afraid men will killl them thing
