It’s unbearable. I am basically restricted to one room of my house for the majority of the day as everywhere else is too hot. Have barely been outside in days, and feel constantly lethargic and fuzzy-headed. I usually go running 2-3 times a week but that’s gone down the pan as it’s too hot. Can’t sleep properly due to the heat and wake up feeling just as knackered as when I went to bed.

I genuinely struggle to understand how anyone can enjoy this weather. 25 degrees, yes; 38 and extreme humidity - what on earth is enjoyable about it?

Yes same here. I usually go for a walk every day which is great for my mental health however it’s been too hot so I’m feeling really down and kind of trapped in my house. My car’s aircon also decided to break (mechanical issue not regassing) so can’t even drive anywhere at the moment.

My cat is enjoying it though!

My gym has air con. It’s a five minute walk. I’m not paying £1.50 to park

Worked 6 hours in a secondary school yesterday. The kid's were allowed to wear their p.e kit but we were all dripping. They really trooped through it.

The problem then is that schools would feel obliged to then run the things from the revenue budget, and they certainly can't afford that.

It’s like the heating. Some schools don’t put on the heating until after Oct half term. Sometimes we have cold Septembers and Octobers.

I can see the schools not switching on the air con until July.

Do seriously think that study of 20 people proves your point.😂

How many people does your study involve?

Why should i have done a study? I am not telling people that aircon stops people tolerating hot weather.

You ridiculed a published and peer reviewed scientific study based on the fact that your DH doesn’t have a problem with warm temperatures when he gets home from work.

I wasn't basing anything on the fact that my DH doesn't have a problem and i wasn't ridiculing the study. I was laughing at you thinking it proves anything given it only involved 20 people.

Despite the low sample rate, that study carries a lot more weight than your anecdotal observations of your husband.

Particularly as you haven’t countered with anything published and peer reviewed that contradicts it.

walrushurricane · 28/06/2026 01:07

@cinquanta Why should I find evidence that contradicts your claim that air conditioning stops people from being able to tolerate hot weather.

Its going to cool for a week then back into the 30's im afraid

WhatNoRaisins · 28/06/2026 07:03

I'll have to spend this week getting sorted out before another period of trying to keep still. Really starting to hate the summer.

Yes, I've got that on my long range forecast too. I'm absolutely dreading it.

ConverselyAttired · 28/06/2026 09:12

I can't find one of the 5 or 6 air con units I have earmarked in stock, anywhere. Not even Amazon which is unusual. I really hope somewhere gets a delivery this week!.

Mitzuko · 28/06/2026 09:23

My self employed business has been destroyed, I will struggle to pay bills next month due to many cancellations.

backformoreofthesame · 28/06/2026 09:27

To some extent you can build up tolerance to heat
but at some level of heat and humidity ( and that’s particularly relevant in the uk) your body can’t cope. Some people might cope better than others. But effectiveness goes down too - coping , surviving isn’t the same as thriving

Peony1985 · 27/06/2026 07:45

I’m SE too. About 20 mins inland from Gosport.
I have been sweaty at night but I’m another one that can live with it. I don’t have fans or air con, just open windows at night and shut in the day.

I really don’t get the mass moaning over something that’s less than 5 days! If it had been going on for a couple of weeks fair enough.

As a self-employed dog walker, I have had to lose three full days of income due to the heat.
I'm also autistic and struggle with temperature regulation - I also take medication that makes me sweat a lot more which is a sensory nightmare.

I'm glad you're fine but many of us are struggling.

I'm on holiday in Germany right now and it's currently 38 degrees at 8.30pm, so if we're not already in the epicentre of Too Fucking Hot we're going to die next week 😅

I lived in the tropics for a couple of years before this so I'm actually not finding the heat too unbearable (at least it's not 80% humidity), but I SERIOUSLY miss fans being standard in restaurants and hotel bedrooms, especially at night. I don't even need AC, but my kingdom for a small pedestal fan.

We are in Germany too on a holiday we’ve been planning for a couple of years. Now fearing we are all going to be hot, grumpy, lethargic and hiding indoors rather than seeing all the things that have been on our bucket list for years.

the80sweregreat · 28/06/2026 10:14

I went to Germany a few years ago ( first time visit ) and was surprised how hot it was in August
The apartment had big shutters and built to redirect the heat outside
No air con, but it somehow kept the heat out during the day. I am not sure why I thought it wouldn’t be that hot though, but most places had air con in the restaurants.
Maybe a lot of places can’t afford to run it now?
Apart from supermarkets, not many places have air con in the UK. I guess it’ll be something we all need in the future, but the government will try to stop this no doubt.

Auburngal · 28/06/2026 10:30

Supermarkets need to step up and do something to reduce the number of chillers and freezers out of action asap. Many stores have fans for these on their roofs. Very silly idea. Look at aerial photos of supermarkets near you….

They are losing money from not selling food, having to reduce it heavily or disposing of it either because the cabinets got too warm or with fresh and chilled produce (berries, prepared fruit etc) the date is up on it.

the80sweregreat · 28/06/2026 10:36

The amount of food waste is shocking isn’t it.
If these temperatures are the norm now , the supermarkets need to look into how to try and solve it. Some may need new freezers or chillers installed.

WhatNoRaisins · 28/06/2026 11:21

I'd have thought that the main barrier to adapting in countries like the UK is the on and off of the hot weather. I'm going to try by wearing things like jumpers this week so I can "feel the benefit" of not wearing them when it's hot again.

the80sweregreat · 28/06/2026 11:34

Only going by the experts on tv this week, these heatwaves are here to stay now. Northern Europe is also experiencing hotter weather, so I can’t see it changing much or going back to more unpredictable summers in the Uk. Of course , people may say differently and argue it’s not ‘climate change ‘ at all, but it’s hard to know really.
If blocking out the sun is the answer , then that doesn’t seem to be working either at the moment ( I Have seen a few articles online around this in the past)

I’m just giving up on it for now and waiting until Autumn. They are much cheaper then.

greengreyblue · 28/06/2026 13:40

So much cooler today. I managed a 45 min walk on my own and a short walk with the dog and did some gardening! Can it just stay like this now please? 🙏🏻
