Wouldn’t it be lovely if big businesses supplied schools with air con units??? Just saying.

The problem then is that schools would feel obliged to then run the things from the revenue budget, and they certainly can't afford that.

Sorry that was to @cinquanta

Regardless, some (or many) people may have to use AC in extreme heat with certain medical conditions just to manage or survive though. It’s all about individual risk assessment. Many common everyday medical conditions or medications can affect the autonomic nervous system which regulates many aspects of the body. Plus in older age these things become harder to manage or cope with.

WhatNoRaisins · 27/06/2026 12:33

As I've said earlier what worries me is how inactive I become to cope with heat. I expect that will become more of a thing as I age and if heatwaves get worse it's a coping mechanism I'll resort too for more of the year. I think for my own health I'll need some sort of cool room with an exercise machine. I might be able to do that with some work on my house but I can't rule out air con.

Tortoiseoncaffeine · 27/06/2026 12:49

Agree completely with the comment about inactivity not helping. I manage my health conditions through regular exercise (walking 3-5 miles a day) which makes a massive improvement to my illness. Sitting around inside because I’d faint in the extreme heat outside causes a flare up of symptoms. Due to Hypermobile joints with osteoarthritis and also nerve damage in my neck after surgery, I can’t use gyms or even swim anymore. Outside walking has helped enormously. Hoping to get out to our local woods this evening if it cools enough as today is slightly fresher.

My niece is 7 months pregnant and suffering. 🥲

@Peony1985 "Rain and clouds next week (like the week before the heatwave)."

oh wow, you have completely different weather than me. Didn't realise there was such a big difference. I did think it was strange that you were really enjoying your fifth day of 38°. And the week prior was 28° which was fine, but the flat hasn't had any time to cool down.

OonaStubbs · 27/06/2026 13:09

I love the hot weather and wish it was like this all year round.

Daily drives to the gym in an air conditioned car aren't great for the environment either though. That's assuming that you can park close by.

I love the sun, but I'm over this!

Highly pissed off that im wasting my weekend doom scrolling because I'm too hot to do anything else! The chores are mentally piling up and I'm not even neglecting them to do anything fun.

WhatNoRaisins · 27/06/2026 13:34

But my point is it seems like this hot weather is caused by us burning fossil fuels and the solutions to living with heatwaves for the most part seem to involve burning even more.

But taking a week off the gym would also have a miniscule impact on your health and fitness.

All the "miniscule" environmental impacts add up hence global warming.

With some of the predictions it might be more than the odd week though.

Do seriously think that study of 20 people proves your point.😂

Do you really not see the irony in this attitude?

@IStillHearTheWaves

so if it’s no big deal to have a week off exercise, why are people complaining?! 🤣

And while it probably wouldn’t have much impact on my physical fitness, it would on my mental health. So I won’t be having a week off and if that means having to drive to gym, I’ll do it ✌️

Just go for a run outside. That shouldn't be a problem if you like the heat so much.

I do. But I need to strength train too so I’ll have to go to gym also.

Mmm. Interested where you live.
The week before this one may have hit 28 mid afternoon towards the end but mornings were still 17 degrees and we had clouds most days. Nights weren’t hot,
The week before that was rain and wind ,
it was 25 last weekend and then got hotter but yesterday cooled back down.

I’m SE Hampshire and work outside

Love the sunshine. Today is the first day i have been too warm. We are coastal NE so always have a sea breeze but Today is a hot wind.

Auburngal · 27/06/2026 18:06

It’s the humidity that is the biggest issue for me being asthmatic. Don’t have an issue abroad when it’s high 30s plus. Have walked miles as humidity is dry. Yet going up stairs with two bags of shopping at 9am this morning, I was struggling

Had phone consultations with asthma nurse and GP yesterday and been prescribed a new inhaler. Hopefully 🙏 that will help
