You've done a great job, it's a lovely cake.

Jamesblonde2 · 23/06/2026 18:18

Of course not, a sweet chocolate cake.

It's lovely! Homemade ones are always the best. My son turned 5 earlier this month and he's also capybara mad.

ETA it's meant to be a capy hot tub 🤣

Edited

Now THAT’S good! See the difference 🤦‍♀️😂

I don't know why people need to be so mean and rude. Your daughter is very lucky to be able to have a party and a mum that cares enough to make a home made cake, and I bet it tastes delicious. It doesn't look like a professional cake because it isn't. And in this heat you've done well to get anything standing upright. I dont think you should feel embarrassed at all.

This absolutely. You’ve done amazingly with the cake! A lot of effort goes into making a cake even before you’ve iced it unless you’re a real baker, you should be proud of your efforts!

Absolutely not , it looks fabulous!

Pebbles16 · 23/06/2026 18:27

My initial reaction is "that is SO fun"... I will now go back and read the posts.
But, @Juststickitonthetopandcallitaday it's beyond what many people could conjure so I hope the recipients love it and - if they don't - don't let them eat cake.

Calliopespa · 23/06/2026 18:28

I think you've done well Op, but why not just show her? I know what you mean about being embarrassed and I think not being embarrassed if you are prone is better than having a surprise.

My mum once produced a cake at my party when I was about that age and I nearly died of embarrassment. It had a character I loved standing in the middle but unfortunately that character was seen as a bit babyish (though she was right that I still loved it in private)

Juststickitonthetopandcallitaday · 23/06/2026 14:50

You are all too kind as it’s quite obviously homemade 🤣
Dd having Capybara themed party, so not too babyish, but she’s going through a weird phase where she’s starting to get embarrassed by things, not sure if she’ll be disappointed and just really hate the thought of me embarrassing her.
We live in a very wealthy area and all custom made cakes, which I’ve had before, but have spent a lot on the venue and also sort of fed up with the perfect ones.
But I also feel sick at the thought of presenting this and am cringing a lot 😬 and wondering why I didn’t just go with the easier option!

I can’t believe you made that. It loves lovely. Also very unique. I thought you’d bought it. Bet it’s delicious too.

Happyjoe · 23/06/2026 18:31

It's rustic, cute, home made and probably tastes wonderful, esp to 8 year olds. Serve up, enjoy.

Weeellokthen · 23/06/2026 18:37

MissVerucaSalt · 23/06/2026 15:01

It looks a little bit like the poo emoji, but it’s not without charm!

Would I serve it? Honestly no, but that’s purely because it’s not my style of baking, and I don’t like to put non-edible items on cake. What matters is if the 8yo in question likes it!

Guess you never picked your username by accident 😂

OutOfApricots · 23/06/2026 18:38

It's covered in chocolate, what's not to like?

It looks fun and absolutely delicious, and anyone who thinks that the standard isn't 'good enough' for a child's birthday cake is way too far up their own arse.

Juststickitonthetopandcallitaday · 23/06/2026 18:15

I’m wondering if I should put some Maltesers around the bottom of the cake

Yes.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 23/06/2026 18:47

It's absolutely adorable and the maltesers would be teh perfect final touch.

Can I come too please?

Sashimiandhisthunderpaws · 23/06/2026 18:47

It looks great. However my mum has made changes to my cakes for my daughter after I'd told her they were finished and I didn't want to make any improvements to the decoration. 😆

I didn't laugh at the time though.

Those are perfect words for it. It will look lovely in the photos, the 8 year olds are going to love it, especially the chocolate icing.

samthepigeon · 23/06/2026 18:53

I think it is great! I always made my kid's birthday cakes - so much more heartfelt than chucking some money at someone. Also, the cake itself tasted way better than whatever these bought cakes are made from. I think it is perfect - chocolately (always a win), and very cute.

katepilar · 23/06/2026 19:02

It does look like a cake that has gone wrong and is trying to be save by things stuck on it.

I find it interesting that so many people fine it lovely. Perhaps they find it lovely just because someone made it rather than bought it.

I wouldnt mind having it at home with family, not sure about the party if you are worried about cheeky kids who are used to perfect professional cakes.

RosieSpring · 23/06/2026 19:07

Are those capybaras edible? My kids would go mad for this cake and I showed them the pic and they both said they WANT it for their parties. So 10/10 so far.

It’s because I work with children. Never underestimate their ability to do stupid things, like try and eat a plastic toy off the top of a cake! 🤣

Mosaic80 · 23/06/2026 19:11

It looks absolutely delicious OP and that is the only thing a cake should be judged on 😆! It looks lovely and I love the decorations. I think I’m the moment and when they’re all tucking in, any worries about having a not completely perfect cake will melt away. We did dd (5) a homemade cake and people
lived it even though it didn’t look like a perfectly decorated cake. And it tasted lovely.

What’s your problem with this? Someone cared enough to make a well risen, decorated cake that looks good to eat instead of buying one.
If it was in this heat, even more credit due.

Scattery · 23/06/2026 19:12

I am in my mid forties.

You could buy me a thousand store-bought or designer cakes. Fondant a mile high. Fancy doodads and loopy writing.

I would trade them all just for a slice of one of my mother's homemade cakes.

I think it's a lovely cake OP, it looks like it will be tasty and one day your child will look back and realise the time and effort you spent making it.

aurpod1980 · 23/06/2026 19:14

It’d amazing OP! Nothing better than home made cake well done :)

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/06/2026 19:14

Every single time someone asks for opinions on a home-made cake a few people make the same snipey comments. It's a mystery to me what they get out of it. Why would you want to make another mum feel less confident and make her think that other mums at the party and the young guests will all be critical? Even if they were, which I doubt, so what? Some people who pay hundreds of pounds for an elaborately decorated cake designed with social media in mind seem to want to make other people feel bad about their perfectly nice home-made efforts which probably taste better and certainly cost much less. It's a shame some kids are being brought up to believe that things have to cost a small fortune and be professionally made to be worth bothering with.
