I do my best to keep the house cool when it gets really hot. I do not cope well with heat. I make an effort to draw curtains, keep windows closed etc.

Come down during my lunch break and the formerly cool kitchen is now a sauna. Of all days dh has decided today is the day to use up the frozen pork for pulled pork sandwiches (dinner).

This after I told the kids not to open windows etc.

Dh doesn’t normally work from home so wanted a “treat”. I said it was an incredibly dumb thing to do. And I got called hysterical. And a nag.

It will be raining again next week, he needs to whip round M&S and get the picky bits in, pronto! Forget about roasting a big load of pork… Give that to the dog!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 22/06/2026 22:25

With you totally. My DD BAKED a cake and it was in the oven just as I finished work. I had to sit outside.

RafaFan · 22/06/2026 22:30

Kind of ungrateful is it not? Coming home to a home-cooked meal is generally considered to be a positive thing. I'm not surprised he was pissed off.
Pulled pork is also great done in a slow cooker. Doesn't give off nearly as much heat as an oven.

SquirrelGG · 22/06/2026 22:48

You are being ridiculous. I cook the same food whether it is hot or cold, summer or winter. I have never felt any hotter by having the oven than when it's off.

Does everything that passes your lips have to be cooked? When it's really hot over summer, or on holiday, ideally I aim not to put a pan on a hob at all. We eat cold cured meats, cheese, bread, salad, hummus and other dips, fruit ... Summer holiday food, basically!

Oh I see. That's you. Id soon be bored with cold picky food

Give me a decent curry or biryani

Over reaction. Have a Solero and STFU

Except you don't slow cook at those temperatures. Slow cooking is done at much lower temperatures.

It would be cremated after hours at 200 lol

Wow, do you talk to people like that in real life are you just amazingly offensive online?

Yes that was rhetorical....I already know the answer.

Well me and DS had cheesy baked beans on toast for dinner (microwaved the beans) and some cut up vegetables (baby plum tomatoes, cucumber and orange pepper.) I'm not turning the oven on and my kitchen gets hot as I don't have blinds or curtains in there and it gets the sun in the evening. DS ate most of his veggies and all his cheesy beans on toast.

Aye but UK dwellings aren't built for hot weather they're built to retain heat .
Glad I'm NE Scotland
SE people you've my sympathies.

Buildings which retains heat usually also keep cool better. Our house certainly does, downstairs at least.
And I'm down south and loving it.

People seem to have this "UK houses are built to retain heat" drummed into them at birth, as though houses in no other country in the world are. And yes, houses which retain heat usually also keep cool.

Reading MN anyone would think the UK was hotter, colder, more humid etc. than any other country in the world, when in reality it's just that many of the citizens are overly dramatic!

Much lower than 200-250??

Do you just leave it out on the counter on a hot day?

BeWittyRobin · 23/06/2026 06:35

Omg please take a long hard look at yourself. A ridiculous over reaction in my opinion

Oh, I've just realized that this is a Fahrenheit vs Celcius thing.

Point is, slow cooking something for 6-8 hours at a low heat warms up an average size kitchen by several degrees more than using an oven for an hour at a much higher heat.

So yeah, during a heat wave is the worst time to slow cook using an oven.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/06/2026 07:35

Id murder anyone who lit a candle in my house right now.

I doubt that people who live in hotter climates for longer eat salad and ice cream every day.

Im in Spain. Yes to colder meals, eating around 9-10 pm plus lots have a Summer ( outdoor ) kitchen.

Bourneo · 23/06/2026 08:11

Omg! I'd be absolutely livid!!!

MN wouldn’t be MN without a generous helping of (over) drama.

That’s lunch for my lot. I don’t think I could get away serving up a sandwich and salad again in the evening.

You need a ninja in your life.

MrsOni · 23/06/2026 12:50

Unless you have something stupid like an AGA a modern, well insulated oven does not add to the temperature of a room to any noticeable extent.

Mine does - it's a modern oven, but in an old kitchen. If we have it on on really hot days like today, it adds quite a lot of heat to the house, which we try to avoid. It's great in the winter, though, as it supplements the central heating.

It doesn't make the room suddenly hot (the OP must be exaggerating) but it does make a difference and when you're battling to keep the temperatures down it doesn't seem particularly sensible.

The fact that it contributes to raising the temperature of your room is the reason why the official advice is not to use the oven when it's very hot. It's also obvious, when you think about it - the heat has to come into the room ultimately.
