AiBU to be angry with husband for slow roasting pork during heatwave?

I do my best to keep the house cool when it gets really hot. I do not cope well with heat. I make an effort to draw curtains, keep windows closed etc.

Come down during my lunch break and the formerly cool kitchen is now a sauna. Of all days dh has decided today is the day to use up the frozen pork for pulled pork sandwiches (dinner).

This after I told the kids not to open windows etc.

Dh doesn’t normally work from home so wanted a “treat”. I said it was an incredibly dumb thing to do. And I got called hysterical. And a nag.

I'd be fuming. The oven is banned this week at mine !!

🙄🙄🙄

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 22/06/2026 19:08

You don't want your husband to cook anything because it's 31 degrees?

It's going to get hotter later this week, but it really isn't that hot today and people still have to eat.

Yabu.

The heat doesn't disappear though, so although the oven is insulated, the heat ends up in the room.

Claude can explain it better than me -

Your oven converts electrical or gas energy into heat. Some of that heat goes into cooking your food. But even that portion doesn't disappear — when the food cools down on your counter, it releases that heat back into the room. The rest leaks through the oven walls and door immediately. When you open the oven, another blast goes straight into the kitchen.
So 100% of the energy you put into the oven eventually becomes heat in your living space. None of it escapes — unless you open a window, in which case some convects out.
The same is true of almost every appliance — your fridge, your TV, your lights is just adding to the thermal load of the space.

Thank you for that. I was sitting here totally gobsmacked at the number of people who claim that normally functioning ovens don't heat their kitchens. In the winter when it's cold, I cook rice pudding and baked potatoes to boost the heating!
It's 41°C where I am, and despite us keeping the windows and external blinds closed and two ventilators on, it still got up to 28°C in the kitchen without any cooking at all.
We had cold chicken salad and melon for lunch (chicken slow cooked on Saturday so it wouldn't heat the house) and gazpacho with boiled eggs this evening.... again, the eggs were boiled earlier to avoid heating the kitchen.
Husband prowls the house checking we are doing the maximum to keep it cool - there is no way he would have pulled an idiot stunt like putting the oven on.
@Prok You have my sympathy.

Where the preference is about the health of the whole family ..1 persons greed doesn’t trump the others well-being

In no way was anyone’s health compromised.

Is it just ovens people are finding is an issue. I've got the curry pot simmering on hoband it's not made much difference to the heat

What an idiot. Ive been eating cold food all weekend. I cant comprehend eating anything hot in this weather.

I’ve been eating some cold food, some cooked food.

Guess what, people are all different and like different things.

It doesn’t make someone an idiot just because they do things differently to you.

You mean this pleasantly warm weather? Not everyone finds the current temperatures too warm to eat normally. It was 33 degrees outside the front of our house this afternoon. We have just had grilled pork chops and mashed potato for dinner, served with hot veg and a delicious tangy gravy.

Cooked by my (not an idiot) DH.

It’s ovens much more than the hob - I live in the US where summers and winters can be brutal - and for a decade we lived in a small open plan house with only a wood stove and fire for heat in winter and no aircon in summer.

In very cold weather I’d use the gas oven all day to bake bread, roasts, casseroles etc and it made a significant difference to the heat in the downstairs. 5-10 degrees F.

In Summer we’d do all the main cooking outside for the same reason.

Daftypants · 22/06/2026 20:02

That’s annoying, I’d be really pissed off at him .
We are currently having quite nice warm temperatures where I am , not horrendously hot .
I had oven on tonight but only for 15 mins for salmon fillets and my house is maybe 21c inside right now

I doubt that people who live in hotter climates for longer eat salad and ice cream every day.

My Singaporean SiL doesn’t consider any meal a ‘proper’ one if it’s not cooked, and hot.

WilfredsPies · 22/06/2026 20:08

He called you a hysterical nag after turning the kitchen into a sauna because he wanted a ‘treat’ for lunch? I would be inclined to show him exactly what a hysterical nag actually looked like. Who the fuck does he think he’s talking to? You’re his wife, not some random down the pub he’s fallen out with.

BitOutOfPractice · 22/06/2026 20:13

Did he say you were hysterical? Or were you hysterical?

I think YABU. We have the oven on now in se England. It’s fine. Calm down.

I wish I was having pulled pork.

Yabu.

She hasn't said she doesn't want her husband to cook anything

She's annoyed that he has chosen the start of a heatwave to slowcook something.

Slowcooking something at 200/250 heats a room to a far greater extent than everyday cooking at a higher temperature.

I do think its pretty stupid and selfish of him tbh.

MandingoAteMyBaby · 22/06/2026 20:26

It’s not even that hot

DinoLil · 22/06/2026 20:29

I have skylights in my kitchen and it gets HOT!!

I decided to throw a pizza in the oven for a quick tea earlier. Forgot to tell Alexa to set a timer. Forgot about the pizza.

GEEEEEEZ!!! Burnt pizza, roasting kitchen, nothing edible left to eat, just a pile of ash 😆

I'm staring at a bag of crisps now. Happy to swap you!! And you have someone cooking for you! Colour me green!

PomplaMouse · 22/06/2026 20:31

OMGitsnotgood · 22/06/2026 16:17

Our oven only makes the kitchen hot when the oven door is open. For pulled pork you only open the door for a few seconds to take it out. I wonder if you have a problem with your oven? For me a slow roast joint which then needs very little doing to it makes way more sense than using the hob in this heat

Are you forgetting to turn the oven on, or is it outside?

So go into a different room. If you didn't notice while he was cooking, it can't be having that much effect outside the kitchen.

my downstairs is open plan so someone having the oven on for hours would massively heat up my lovely cool downstairs. I wouldn't be happy either not this week in this heat!

Hernameisdeborah · 22/06/2026 20:55

I sympathise with your husband. My husband had a massive go at me for switching the oven on for about 20 mins in warm ish weather. I genuinely had no idea it heated the kitchen up so much but to him it was OBVIOUS I shouldn’t switch the oven on. I so badly wanted to tell him to fuck off and let me cook what I wanted. With different tolerance levels, you just don’t realise what might feel normal to you might feel to the other like you’re trying to kill them. I doubt your husband realised it would affect you so much. Have you had similar arguments about acceptable heat levels / hot weather meal choices before?

Except you don't slow cook at those temperatures. Slow cooking is done at much lower temperatures.

Yes I have gas hobs and I'm happy to boil rice/cook a curry but having my gas oven on really heats up my kitchen/diner. I can't comment on electric hobs/oven though

OP called him dumb for cooking food in his own home.

Who does she think she is.
I wouldn’t even say that to my child, let alone someone who owns half the house.

I think she got off lightly and I would have called my DH much worse if he dared call me dumb for cooking food in my own home.

flirtybird · 22/06/2026 21:09

I made faggots chips and peas, the kitchen was hot as the oven goes on the highest setting. It was good though despite the heat.

GlomOfNit · 22/06/2026 21:22

Thechaseison71 · 22/06/2026 15:43

So if you aren't allowed to cook because it's hot what is everyone eating

Does everything that passes your lips have to be cooked? When it's really hot over summer, or on holiday, ideally I aim not to put a pan on a hob at all. We eat cold cured meats, cheese, bread, salad, hummus and other dips, fruit ... Summer holiday food, basically!

TroysMammy · 22/06/2026 14:56

No, but on the Canadian prairies "summer kitchens" were a thing - basically a shed for cooking in during the summer to avoid heating the house up. They've disappeared now that most houses have air conditioning.
