AiBU to be angry with husband for slow roasting pork during heatwave?

I do my best to keep the house cool when it gets really hot. I do not cope well with heat. I make an effort to draw curtains, keep windows closed etc.

Come down during my lunch break and the formerly cool kitchen is now a sauna. Of all days dh has decided today is the day to use up the frozen pork for pulled pork sandwiches (dinner).

This after I told the kids not to open windows etc.

Dh doesn’t normally work from home so wanted a “treat”. I said it was an incredibly dumb thing to do. And I got called hysterical. And a nag.

He's bonkers, and should use a slow cooker for the pulled pork. I was awake at 5.30 so opened all the windows to cool the house, the teens (now off uni) are well trained, as I was off to work, and were asking what time to close them etc, if someone had them put the oven on I would have been 'hysterical' too. He's called you that as he knows he did something without thinking. Tell him he can work in the kitchen and think about his life choices 🤣.
I've come home to a lovely cool house thank goodness (well relative to outside).
There's a thread about someone in London with a very hot flat, and some great suggestions for staying cool on there which included putting your feet in cold water, genius!

BunfightBetty · 22/06/2026 17:44

He's a numpty.

And you are very much NOT unreasonable.

Make him eat salad and gazpacho for the rest of the week.

Team husband.
Great a grip woman.

I'd get a grip!

...of his stupid neck!

FloodlightsOnTheSquare · 22/06/2026 17:47

This is peak ‘nobody on MN can cope with heat’.

You gave someone a bollocking for cooking in their own kitchen 🤷‍♀️

Why are everyone’s ovens heating their houses? Do they not have insulated doors? Are people leaving the oven doors open after the food has cooked?Psychologically it’s difficult to imagine roast food when it is hot, but ovens should not really be making the room hotter. Especially a slow cooked piece of meat at a low temperature. Using a hob probably will, even if it is induction because the hot food is poofing steam in to the room 🤷‍♀️

But if it's hot where does the heat go then?
The insulation just slows the rate at which it dissipates. The heat is absorbed into the walls of the oven but it doesn't disappear, it just slowly radiates outward or escapes through the vents.
So eventually the heat in the oven does move out into your kitchen, all be it slowly. So it's definitely heating up your kitchen.

It's mildly annoying but better today than layer in the week and hopefully plenty of leftovers for the super hot days

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 22/06/2026 17:50

I think you are overreacting. I have soup a lunchtime. I still use the oven during hot weather. The pulied pork sounds amazing.

Yabu to eat pigs in any weather...

Didn't take long.

Do you normally expect him to run all his cooking decisions past you first?

No, I'd just expect him not to be an idiot 💁🏻‍♀️

big expectations I know!

Wetcoatsandmudagain · 22/06/2026 18:01

I would be delighted if I actually found someone cooking instead of me whatever the weather 😂

Gettingbysomehow · 22/06/2026 18:04

What an idiot. Ive been eating cold food all weekend. I cant comprehend eating anything hot in this weather.

Arregaithel · 22/06/2026 15:00

even if they are in blankets, (in spite of the weather?) 😲 🙈

We had a roast dinner yesterday (only happens when we have elderly parents round) and my husband was thrilled to find pigs in blankets at Tesco despite it being June.

PinkPonyAnonymous · 22/06/2026 18:11

YANBU

We don’t use the oven or iron in the heat.

Jollyhockeystickss · 22/06/2026 18:11

Orrr you could open every door and window wide all day until you go to bed so its nice and cool and aired just sayin

TorroFerney · 22/06/2026 18:12

Excited101 · 22/06/2026 15:31

Stupid argument.

A bathroom is for shitting in, but if you came in to a giant turd in the middle of the shower tray, you’d be annoyed.

That doesn't make sense as an analogy - a shower isn't the toilet. If the husband had set fire to the wooden dining table to cook the pork then maybe.

susiedaisy1912 · 22/06/2026 15:01

I’d be fucked right off if he’s had the oven on all morning in a heatwave. Yanbu

My oven doesn’t affect room temperature (AEG). Maybe their’s doesn’t either. I think the heat is making everyone giddy.

Scottsy200 · 22/06/2026 18:17

If you are in peri menopause then you are not being unreasonable at all, and if anyone says you ABU then they have absolutely not experienced PM. I would have lost my shit too, tell him he’s a moron 🤣

Oh yes, the perpetual excuses. On the one hand, women are equal to men and are rational people, in control of their emotions. But when something doesn't go your way, here comes 'pms', 'I'm pregnant and emotional', 'peri' and other shit. Make up your minds.

Also, everyone's here quick to cry 'misogyny' as soon as a man looks at you for longer than 3 seconds or calls you something. But OP's husband is a prick, a moron, a dick, an idiot, selfish, selfish stupid dick, etc., as per this thread. If it's ok to call the husband a 'selfish, stupid dick' for making dinner, can I call OP selfish, stupid cunt then, because I like pulled pork and don't mind heat (+31 isn't even properly hot)? No? Why not?

To be clear, I'm not calling the OP that; it's an example only.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 22/06/2026 18:27

Ive left over ROAST LAMB DINNER from yesterday that'll do me the next few days while I'm at work
He wanted pulled pork ... and ?.
So what ?
Hot countries eat hot dinners ... hot , they all don't live off salads
My husband cooked a ham and cheese omlette for lunch on the hob.

Do you dictate what they eat every night?
More fool you.
Im working 5 evenings this week and told them all to fend for themselves are they are GROWN UPS and if they dont improvise then ive done something wrong because they have to improvise as they are grown up people and if they want a roast dinner tomorrow and Wednesday and Thursday and middle of August they sort it out as long as they clean up after

Wingingit73 · 22/06/2026 18:29

Y cannot have control of the house. Are you all in darkened rooms?

Inastatus · 22/06/2026 18:38

So your oven has warmed up the whole house?? I don’t know anyone who is not cooking normally or just eating salads at the moment.
We are having a lovely pasta bake tonight cooked in the oven 😱 The house temperature has not increased dramatically - back doors are open and there is a nice breeze.
you’d better make sure you don’t have any delicious pulled pork after making such a fuss 😅

caringcarer · 22/06/2026 18:39

He's crazy he should have put it on the BBQ.

HidingFromSunshine · 22/06/2026 18:57

I do this in the heat. I will roast or slow cook one big bit of meat then we eat that for the week with a rotation of sides. That way you just heat the house once and you’ve multiple tasty dinners

Shoopshawady · 22/06/2026 19:04

Get a grip. Just go in another room. It isn’t that deep.
