AiBU to be angry with husband for slow roasting pork during heatwave?

I do my best to keep the house cool when it gets really hot. I do not cope well with heat. I make an effort to draw curtains, keep windows closed etc.

Come down during my lunch break and the formerly cool kitchen is now a sauna. Of all days dh has decided today is the day to use up the frozen pork for pulled pork sandwiches (dinner).

This after I told the kids not to open windows etc.

Dh doesn’t normally work from home so wanted a “treat”. I said it was an incredibly dumb thing to do. And I got called hysterical. And a nag.

You do sound a touch hysterical, but the heat can do that to you 😂
My husband insists on a Roast dinner every single Sunday without fail so I understand your pain completely.

RobinEllacotStrike · 23/06/2026 16:28

YANBU. Today is a good day to not cook anything

WelshMusicMum · 23/06/2026 17:13

Goodness! Such a fuss 😂 My poor, one-legged, multiple sclerosis/osteoporosis hubby can't even make himself a cuppa. He is almost 100% reliant on me, which is frustrating for him and hard work for me 😉 Let your hubster spoil you with a home cooked meal and be thankful you're not in charge of absolutely everything in the house 🙏🏻

Unless you have something stupid like an AGA a modern, well insulated oven does not add to the temperature of a room to any noticeable extent.

Nonsense. If an oven is on for hours, even at a lower heat, it can easily increase the temperature of the average kitchen by 3-5°C.

And if you're roasting something with a high water content - like pork - it will make the room more humid too, making the room feel warmer still.

I struggle to believe that anyone who has ever - for example - cooked a roast, has failed to notice that it heats the room.

We have an old range. Ie leaky and large surface area

That was quite a tantrum, but it doesn’t seem to have helped you much.

ThreeStripeQueen · 23/06/2026 19:14

I still don’t get the angst over it.
I had the oven on this evening roasting a chicken for salad and sandwiches and cooking enchiladas for dinner.
Was it warm in the kitchen? Yes.
Does my family still need to eat? Also yes.
What are all the classic MN protein inhaling teens eating when it’s hot?
Surely not just salami and cheese sandwiches?

OP called him dumb for cooking food in his own home.

Who does she think she is.
I wouldn’t even say that to my child, let alone someone who owns half the house.

I think she got off lightly and I would have called my DH much worse if he dared call me dumb for cooking food in my own home.

🤦‍♀️ No, she didn’t call him dumb. She said that having the oven on for several hours and turning the hub of their home into a sauna simply because he wanted a ‘treat’ was a dumb thing to do. Which it was. That’s not the same thing at all. What she did was criticise the behaviour. He took it up a notch with the personal insults.

WilfredsPies · 22/06/2026 20:08

He called you a hysterical nag after turning the kitchen into a sauna because he wanted a ‘treat’ for lunch? I would be inclined to show him exactly what a hysterical nag actually looked like. Who the fuck does he think he’s talking to? You’re his wife, not some random down the pub he’s fallen out with.

She showed him EXACTLY what a hysterical nag looks like. What a Diva.

😂 Oh shush! Firstly, none of us have any idea what volume or tone she used. Some men cry ‘hysterical nag’ at the roll of an eye, especially when their behaviour is questioned. And don’t tell me you have never got upset at a boyfriend, partner or husband after they’ve done something stupid and selfish. Does that make you a hysterical nag too?

Quite a tantrum? Are you on a different thread? Where has she had a tantrum?

It is pretty easy to serve up some protein without using an oven.

  • slow cooking using a slow cooker barely warms the room at all;

  • frying/grilling/searing on the hob causes only a small amount of warming;

  • grilling in the oven will warm the room somewhat, but not as much as roasting;

  • cooking in an oven will warm the room more - and the main factor is how long the oven is on for, not what temperature it is set at - which is why slow-cooking in an oven is a stupid choice if you are otherwise making efforts to keep the place cool during a heatwave.

You hush.
She said that she shouted at him, threw her lunch in the bin, stomped outside and turned the hose on herself. Hence, hysterical nag. I have gotten upset (never at someone making me dinner), but I haven’t acted like a three year old who didn’t get their way. Certainly never thrown dishes about.

If you’re going to accuse someone of being a diva, having a tantrum and being a hysterical nag, you either need to clarify that you’re talking to @JoshLymanSwagger and not the OP, or make sure you’ve RTFT.

No she didn't. You're talking about a different poster.

I DID clarify by reporting what the OP said she did. Learn to read.

You learn to read. The person who had the hissy fit and launched her lunch into the bin was not @Prok

I made the mistake of putting the oven on for about half an hour just before 12.

I agree entirely with you @Prok It's a fucking stupid thing to do.

I got so hot I lost it, argued with DH - which is about the 4th time in 20+ yrs - threw my lunch in the bin and turned the garden hose on myself.

My kitchen is still bloody hot, I'm hungry and DH is full and I've only just found my glasses (I chucked them somewhere when I came in.

My oven is now OFF until weekend.

Either zap it in the microwave or suck on it raw!

This is not the OP.

HTH

Is it the heat? I don’t blame you, it has turned me into a right knobhead as well, so you’re not the only one. Go and put a cold wet flannel on the back of your neck and run your wrists under the cold tap. Then come back, read it again with fresh eyes and we can argue about who said what from there, if you still want to.

A helpful reminder us all that, if we are ever minded to tell someone to "learn to read", we might want to first double-check we aren't the one in error.

Lest we end up looking like a fuckwit.

MummyWillow1 · 24/06/2026 09:04

Sounds like you are being unreasonable and over reacted. But so did he.

You both need to apologise.

But cooking while it is hot isn’t a sin.
