AiBU to be angry with husband for slow roasting pork during heatwave?

I do my best to keep the house cool when it gets really hot. I do not cope well with heat. I make an effort to draw curtains, keep windows closed etc.

Come down during my lunch break and the formerly cool kitchen is now a sauna. Of all days dh has decided today is the day to use up the frozen pork for pulled pork sandwiches (dinner).

This after I told the kids not to open windows etc.

Dh doesn’t normally work from home so wanted a “treat”. I said it was an incredibly dumb thing to do. And I got called hysterical. And a nag.

OP posts:

ok so not noticeably hotter - which takes me back to why the OP’s kitchen IS noticeably hotter. We got more heat from the chicken itself than from the oven itself over the hour and half it was roasting. I’m not arguing with anyone, just stating what we have experienced.

Yes, I assume 'like a sauna' must have been hyperbole, unless he'd been cooking with the oven open 😂

Ah bugger. I have a slow cooker meal planned for Wednesday. I don’t want that going in the house. Could I use an extension cable and plug it in in the garden (in the shade)? (Only half joking)

I don’t see why not

helpfulperson · 22/06/2026 16:51

Do you normally expect him to run all his cooking decisions past you first?

ThatPearlCat · 22/06/2026 16:53

YANBU - there are loads of nice things to eat that don't take long to cook but once the house is hot, it's hot.

momtoboys · 22/06/2026 16:54

Now I want pulled pork.

He is an idiot but you should invest in a crock pit/slow cooker. It won’t heat the house at all.

I really dislike the vocabulary people are using here.

He's an idiot, I'd be fucked off, even the o.p being angry. If this is the discourse over someone cooking in his own kitchen is it now wonder there is so much aggression in this world

VividPinkTraybake · 22/06/2026 16:59

OtterLovesItsRock · 22/06/2026 15:16

Does he normally use such sexist insults? I voted YANBU because his language was beyond the pale.

Without knowing the o.p's language and tone? I get the feeling he was not the one who made the situation dramatic

This is what I was eluding to in my previous post. Give it a while and OP will be back with mental load complaints about how he always needs instructions etc.

BettyTheGreat · 22/06/2026 17:01

I think if you don't have a small kitchen and you don't live in the SE of England, you won't get this. Sometimes, just having the oven or tumble drier on can make the whole house noticeably hotter.

Op, I totally get it.

Although, today is better than doing it on Wednesday or Thursday when it's forecast to be a lot hotter. Based on some of the threads I've seen lately, half of Mumsnet will no doubt be merrily roasting a leg of lamb and steaming a treacle sponge on those days

A massive salad!! I’m cooking dinner later which will involve using the oven. If my DH walks into the kitchen and has a go at me for using the oven, it will be the last meal I ever cook in this house for anyone.

Ah the good old ,MN massive salad lol.

Not all of us want to live on salad though.

You do that shit outside in the summer heat, not inside. It's not uncommon for people to set up whole summer kitchens outside and most at least BBQ.

Your husband is a stupid selfish dick.

Do you not think that last sentence might be a tad disproportionate?

ManyATrueWord · 22/06/2026 17:07

Slow cooker pork would have been fine. Pork slow cooked in the oven is just a daft thing to do on this heat especially as it had to be taken out the freezer first.

I thought the same. Roasting pork in not an incredibly dumb thing to do...it's that you were incredibly rude and bossy.
I've been using ovens all my life and I have to tell you that their doors are insulated and the heat stays inside. Did you not know that?
If you called me dumb for this I'd tell you to fuck off.

So angry!

Quick google search "thermodynamics where does the heat from the oven go" will get you something like this;

According to the First Law of Thermodynamics, energy cannot be destroyed. The heat goes to three main places:
The Food: A fraction of the heat stays trapped in your food as it cooks.
The Kitchen: The majority of the heat leaks gradually through the oven’s insulated walls and out of its exhaust vents into the room.
The Environment: Even if you turn the oven off and leave the door closed, all the thermal energy stored in the metal walls slowly escapes into the house, increasing the room's overall temperature.

…and all the excess deaths? Just a joke? The strain on our public services?

I’m not sure cooking pulled pork in the comfort of your own home can be compared to people dying because they’re homeless with little access to shade or water or elderly and struggling to stay hydrated.

They often have outdoor kitchen areas.

I live where summer temps are routinely in the 90F-100F range. For a time we only had aircon in the bedrooms which meant downstairs would get very hot and humid. So from July to late August we would only cook outdoors on the BBQ.

Or if you wanted a slow cooked pork you’d use the electric slow cooker which had no heat output for the kitchen.

Yes, I do slow cook or pressure cooker in this weather. Keeps everything so much cooler.

RobertaFirmino · 22/06/2026 17:34

Flamin' hell, the kitchen will cool down you know!

Rosalind1971 · 22/06/2026 17:36

I’ve cooked meals for forty today in a care home as I always do in this heat , maybe he should of put it in the slow cooker less heat off that - wish someone would cook for me when I get home

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 22/06/2026 17:37

We’re having a massive salad tonight 😁
I’m boiling eggs in a gadget. Grating cheese. Chopping leaves.
Adding cooked black rice, sweetcorn, seasonings… and other stuff depending what’s in the salad drawer.
Actually, beetroot and cheese salad is mega. Might do that instead, with a pulses salad with the rice. And things.

Chopped salad is awesome. All my kids eat loads of it. Just chop everything fairly small. Sweetcorn sized.

I walked past our home yesterday and really felt for the staff. I could smell the heat from the kitchen and laundry. 😅🫣

SeriouslyWhataMess · 22/06/2026 17:38

You need a proper slow cooker. I slow cooked a roast chicken in ours today for chicken wraps tonight. The kitchen was closed all day while I worked and it wasn’t any hotter than normal in there.

Toastytina · 22/06/2026 17:40

In this weather I just put an extension cable outside and use the air fryer and slow cooker outside. No extra cooking smells or heat/steam

Blogswife · 22/06/2026 15:49

This hysteria over a 2 day heatwave is hilarious. I’m really enjoying these posts!

2 days. Can't you count? Or are you just on the edge of it somewhere??

SIX days here, all 38/39/40. Red extreme heat warning.

Rosiecloud · 22/06/2026 17:41

I agree with you, he’s an idiot.
