I do my best to keep the house cool when it gets really hot. I do not cope well with heat. I make an effort to draw curtains, keep windows closed etc.

Come down during my lunch break and the formerly cool kitchen is now a sauna. Of all days dh has decided today is the day to use up the frozen pork for pulled pork sandwiches (dinner).

This after I told the kids not to open windows etc.

Dh doesn’t normally work from home so wanted a “treat”. I said it was an incredibly dumb thing to do. And I got called hysterical. And a nag.

Why are everyone’s ovens heating their houses? Do they not have insulated doors? Are people leaving the oven doors open after the food has cooked?Psychologically it’s difficult to imagine roast food when it is hot, but ovens should not really be making the room hotter. Especially a slow cooked piece of meat at a low temperature. Using a hob probably will, even if it is induction because the hot food is poofing steam in to the room 🤷‍♀️

I’d be annoyed too. We had two roasts to use this week so I did both at the same time on Sunday when it was cooler, and plan to have them cold with salad this week. I don’t want the oven on either after spending time cooling the house down.

superchick · 22/06/2026 15:57

Open some windows and enjoy your pork.

We have an open plan kitchen, diner and tv area. There are other rooms but we like to spend most our time in the big room. It’s normally lovely and cool in Summer

He is being unreasonable for using the oven. Everyone knows the best pulled pork is in the slow cooker which would cause no problems

Uncooked pork doesn't taste good, even if the weather is hot.

No but it's perfectly fine staying in the freezer.

I doubt that people who live in hotter climates for longer eat salad and ice cream every day.

No they don't but given that they have, no doubt, had years to acclimatise to their hot weather it's something they're used to.

I've lived in a hot country and no, I didn't live on cold food but my apartment was designed for life in a hot country: built to keep out the heat with stone floors etc. Whereas the houses in this country are designed for keeping in the heat and keeping out to the cold.

And we get this sort of weather, in extreme cases, for a few days every summer.

Your preferences don't trump his preferences. He's cooked dinner. It's no big deal. You need to calm down and realise that you share space with the rest of the family, so you can't expect to get your own way all of the time.

👍👍👍

Even if you live in a flat with no garden?

You don't have a porch or concrete slab? Find a parking lot and start tailgating.

I bought pork shoulder late last week to make pulled pork and it’s been too hot to have the oven on for hours, it’s gone in the freezer.

YANBU at all.

Sensible!!!

Whyherewego · 22/06/2026 16:05

I'd be fuming. The oven is banned this week at mine !!

The hell??30°is not a normal summers day. This week is up to 39 where I am. Nothing about this is normal.

well it appears to be now but prior to 5 years ago it wasn’t

Putting the oven on for hours in this weather is a bit bonkers

A few years ago my dh went shopping and bought home stuff for a casserole... On one of the hottest days of the year. When I queried this decision, he informed me "it was on offer" 🤦🤣 Apparently it hadn't occurred to him that it was on offer because hardly anyone would be daft enough to want to cook a casserole when it's 33 degrees 🤣

On the other hand @Prok ... A pulled pork sandwich does sound amazing 😋

FWC2026 · 22/06/2026 16:09

Thechaseison71 · 22/06/2026 15:43

So if you aren't allowed to cook because it's hot what is everyone eating

Things that don't take hours in the oven!

Tonight im having 'wrap in a bowl ! Put a wrap in the bottom of a pasta bowl, load the bowl with salad, eat all the salad, finish with the wrap with all the dressing @ little bits of salad.

different cold proteins, dressings, salad keep it feeling different every night.

whattheysay · 22/06/2026 16:10

Well, the pork shoulder should have gone in the slow cooker for 5 hours or so then in the oven for only 20 minutes in which case the kitchen wouldn’t have got so hot.

Where the preference is about the health of the whole family ..1 persons greed doesn’t trump the others well-being

Excited101 · 22/06/2026 15:31

Stupid argument.

A bathroom is for shitting in, but if you came in to a giant turd in the middle of the shower tray, you’d be annoyed.

That's a terrible analogy 😂

HappiestSleeping · 22/06/2026 16:12

I am terrible for not liking cold food, so will be cooking something hot at some point today. I'm not sure what, I doubt it will be anything that takes long or requires more than a pan and possibly the air fryer.

Now there has been a mention of pulled pork, it may end up being sausages. Nom.

Glittertwins · 22/06/2026 16:14

Should have done it yesterday with half price electricity if you have British Gas!!!
