Light-hearted one for a Sunday morning. Settle something between me and my husband.

If you asked someone what they want to eat, and they said "boiled eggs and toast" what would you give them?

YABU - Boiled eggs, in eggcups with toast cut into soldiers IE: boiled eggs and soldiers
YANBU - Boiled eggs (shelled) and slices of toast, because that's what they asked for

Soft boiled eggs in an egg cup with soldiers . I'm 75 and I've served and eaten eggs this way for my entire life.

Thebigonesgetaway · Today 13:22

I’m with you op. If it was an adult I’d not even consider dippy eggs and soldiers. I genuinely don’t know any adult who eats like that. All grown ups I know have the egg, inc soft boiled, on toast.

I've never had a soft boiled egg with a salad or anything other than toast.

You're missing out :)

Toast cut into soldiers? How old is he?! 😂😂

thays whay I think I can’t imagine cutting an adults toast into soldiers, if he wants that he can cut them into soldiers himself.

Oh I’d say that was unusual , you’ve never had ramen, or salad Nicoise, kedgeree, a scotch egg?

ChocolateApples · Today 13:29

Two soft boiled eggs. In egg cups. Toaster would be whole for them to do as they please.

Yes, all those things except ramen, but with hard boiled eggs.

Eggs and soldiers

WorkCleanRepeat · Today 13:36

I would have assumed and made the same as you OP.

DustyMaiden · Today 13:45

DH always had soft boiled eggs on toast , I made them once it was a pain in the posterior. I just poach them now.

ginasevern · Today 13:50

If this was a breakfast conversation and someone asked for boiled eggs and toast, I would assume they wanted traditional boiled eggs served in an egg cup. If it was lunchtime then I might ask if that's what they meant. I think the majority of people would assume it was boiled eggs in an egg cup if being served for breakfast.

DilemmaDelilah · Today 14:03

I would assume boiled eggs in egg cups with toast soldiers, BUT as I'm autistic I get worried if I don't know exactly what I'm meant to be doing so I would ask for clarification. Then my DH would get annoyed because apparently I'm meant to know what he means (in the same way he THINKS he knows what I'm trying to say when he finishes my sentences for me or tells me how I'm feeling....)

Woodfiresareamazing2 · Today 14:25

Forget all this debate over eggcups and soldiers, I'd just be extremely grateful that you'd made me breakfast...

JoBrodie · Today 14:29

I'd have to clarify as this menu item is like 'tea' in terms of which type of tea and whether they want milk and or sugar.

My not-very-exciting preference is toast made early to give it a chance to cool so the butter doesn't melt, with a hard-boiled egg (~10 mins) left in its shell for me to handle once cool. But I am probably an outlier as I'd never actively choose eggs into which anything could ever be dipped :)

(Sorry!)
Jo

OtherS · Today 14:36

I'd think they wanted a soft-boiled egg broken onto toast, as I'd assume if they wanted cup and soldiers they'd ask for cup and soldiers. But I'd probably clarify before making it if it wasn't a usual request.

Laura95167 · Today 14:37

Of all the types of egg I could put ON toast boiled is the last one id think off, toast goes IN boiled eggs. Dippy solider style.

Id just assume the adult felt a bit twee saying "dippy eggs and soldiers" so said boiled egg and toast. Which we all would know really meant dippy egg and soldiers

watchingthishtread · Today 14:47

People eat shelled boiled eggs on toast? That's a new one one me. I'd have thought the same as your husband but perhaps that's the Irish in me. We mostly put shelled boiled eggs with salad or occasionally in a sandwich.

Corvidsarethebest · Today 15:08

Dippy eggs.

I do occasionally boil eggs for salad or just a snack, but I would say hard-boiled eggs if I meant that. Boiled eggs are soft boiled in this house, and go with soldiers obviously.

SerendipityCat · Today 16:28

This is proving to be a surprisingly interesting and revealing thread - I can’t believe that some posters seem to think that toast soldiers aren’t for adults, though! You don’t know what you’re missing.
And yes, I’ll happily boil eggs to go into salads and the like, but these days I prefer “jammy” eggs rather than hard-boiled. Much better flavour for being softer, and none of the dryness.

You can have soft boiled with a salad

Exactly, really surprised at all the rules people have on eggs. And that grown adults want their toast cut into soldiers.

many recipes call for a soft boiled egg. Salad nicoise is a key one, and I listed others, from ramen to kedgeree, even a scotch egg when done right has a runny egg.

im a little bemused that adults have never eaten a soft boiled egg in any recipe and would only eat one if they had it with toast cut into little strips

I’m 32 and I definitely still eat boiled eggs with soldiers!

And I'm nearly twice your age and so do I. Of course there is no age limit on boiled egg and toast soldiers. What a ridiculous suggestion

If nothing else, I have learnt that chuck egg isn't just an '80s computer game.

So now I really, really want at least 3 (see below) perfectly boiled eggs (yolks runny but on their way to becoming cooked, and whites thoroughly cooked) on buttered sourdough toast, black pepper, sea salt, watercress...

But unfortunately, I (a)can't boil an egg, and (b)am allergic to egg whites but do like a yolk, so an egg for me is necessarily small, and also an unpleasant display of egg dissection when I eat brunch with friends and the whites aren't cooked. My friends are lovely, very kind and patient about my allergy, only saying once or thrice every single time "Why the fucking hell did you order eggs again, you fucking moron?"

Instead of the egg yolks I'm craving, for dinner (tea/supper) tonight I'm having poussin (teenage egg).

If someone asked me for boiled eggs on, or with, toast, I'd say:
"Just popping to the shop" (round the corner, thank goodness) and "I can do you scrambled."

If they wanted dippy eggs and soldiers they should have asked for dippy eggs and soldiers, this is British law.
