Light-hearted one for a Sunday morning. Settle something between me and my husband.

If you asked someone what they want to eat, and they said "boiled eggs and toast" what would you give them?

YABU - Boiled eggs, in eggcups with toast cut into soldiers IE: boiled eggs and soldiers
YANBU - Boiled eggs (shelled) and slices of toast, because that's what they asked for

Just asked dh. He would expect toast with an egg on top.

So a boiled egg in it's shell on toast?

I'd ask, do you mean boiled eggs and soldiers?

I wouldn't assume at all - I'd specifically ask if they wanted their eggs hard or soft boiled ....

They would roll around if they're shelled and cut on half.

Not if they're placed cut wide downwards.

goldtrap · Today 09:52

Gosh, I would never expect someone to shell a soft-boiled egg. Is that even a thing?!
If the egg was soft-boiled, I would expect egg to be in a cup with the toast as soldiers for the dipping thereof. So I am voting the YABU option.

Of course it's a thing. You can shell a soft boiled egg just as you can shell a hard boiled egg. I suppose you just take more care with it.
What he got was something like this but a bit runnier:

No, why would it be in its shell?
It would be a boiled egg, not in its shell, on toast.

Toast with sliced boiled eggs on it is what they'd get from me. But thats because thats what DH would meen if he asked for boiled eggs and toast. Dippy egg and soldiers is an entirely different menu item.

7238SM · Today 10:06

Why so cryptic OP? Was this is a restaurant/cafe or at home? If at home, I'd asked for clarity on what exactly they wanted.

ItIsGreen · Today 10:07

Melancholyflower · Today 09:49

Why would you give them poached when they asked for boiled eggs?

Because you use boling water to poach them

partypartychicken · Today 10:07

Ive never really heard of someone having shelled soft boiled eggs just on top of toast, probably because the shelling process is so unpredictable with soft boiled eggs. There's nothing wrong with it, but I would always serve dippy egg to someone who asked for a boiled egg with toast.

getsomehelp · Today 10:07

Is this a husband ? Did he complain ? If he wanted soldiers I’d say, “I’m not your Mummy”

But he asked for boiled eggs & toast not boiled eggs on toast.

So did he want something different to what you did & if so what?

2chocolateoranges · Today 10:10

No adult eats boiled eggs with soldiers! 😂 I haven’t had that since I was about 10.

id presume dh meant egg sliced on toast as that’s what he would normally have.

For me it would be the waste of yolk!

Isn't dipping the point of soft boiled eggs?

Unless he wanted hard boiled eggs sliced or mashed onto the toast?

I eat soft boiled eggs albeit not with soldiers but I do dip the toast in the yolk.

He wanted egg and soldiers, but he didn't ask for egg and soldiers so I have him boiled eggs and toast, but yes I arranged the eggs on top of the toast.
However... He was actually happy with what I gave him and said it was delicious. He was just surprised because he expected egg and soldiers. I asked him why he didn't ask specifically for eggs and soldiers and a discussion ensued.

I love boiled egg and soldiers!

Thats what Id have made for anyone who asked for boiled egg and toast

IainTorontoNSW · Today 10:13

I'd offer two hard-boiled eggs and a slice of dark-toasted wholemeal multi-grain toast ... as this is what I'd prepare for myself.

Why is the yolk wasted though? It's no more wasted than it is with a friend egg or a poached egg. You still have the yolk, you just mop it up with the toast.

I’m 32 and I definitely still eat boiled eggs with soldiers!

I DID ask if he wanted them hard or soft boiled. He said soft.
I still didn't assume soldiers and an egg cup.

For me breakfast eggs are soft boiled in an egg cup unless otherwise stated.

I wouldn't ask for soldiers though or serve them to another adult unless asked.

TheBloomingDahlia · Today 10:17

I’ve never seen boiled eggs on toast so that wouldn’t have come to mind. Part of the enjoyment of the food is dipping the bread and scooping out the white! But I guess it would taste the same if the eggs weren’t in their shells. And I would definitely prefer it to poached eggs, I will never ever get the obsession with half-set white in a bouncy sack

EBearhug · Today 10:18

I would expect, or at least, hope for, soft boiled eggs in a cup, with toast - I can cut the toast into soldiers myself.

Fried eggs and poached eggs should also come with soft yolks, so that when they go on the toast, the yolk runs into the toast.

Bristolandlazy · Today 10:18

Overthebow · Today 09:44

I’d make boiled dippy eggs in egg cups with buttered toast cut in to soldiers. Never known anyone to have an actual boiled egg next to toast.

I have, when I fucked up the egg timings.

Jamesblonde2 · Today 10:18

If they didn’t say soldiers then they wouldn’t be getting chucky eggs in egg cups. The soldiers define the way the meal is presented.
