Light-hearted one for a Sunday morning. Settle something between me and my husband.

If you asked someone what they want to eat, and they said "boiled eggs and toast" what would you give them?

YABU - Boiled eggs, in eggcups with toast cut into soldiers IE: boiled eggs and soldiers
YANBU - Boiled eggs (shelled) and slices of toast, because that's what they asked for

We scoop soft boiled eggs out of their shells here to go in sandwiches- not even with toast 😮

Boiled eggs hot go in egg cups. Cold hardish boiled eggs are sliced for sandwiches. Eggs on toast are poached. Anything else is wrong.

Do you never have a warm soft boiled egg with a salad or another dish like a curry? Something like this?

Well, yes with a salad. But this was vaguely about eggs and bread.

SerendipityCat · 21/06/2026 11:02

My husband occasionally asks for what was known in his family as "chuckie eggs", which is a couple of soft-boiled eggs roughly mashed up on toast with plenty of salt and pepper. I'd never come across such a thing, being from the civilised North (Yorkshire) as opposed to his barbarian upbringing in Lancashire, but it's actually delicious. Even more so with some crispy bacon. I'm a convert!

Doggymummar · 21/06/2026 11:06

I'd say three minutes or five

Gosh, I would never expect someone to shell a soft-boiled egg. Is that even a thing?!
If the egg was soft-boiled, I would expect egg to be in a cup with the toast as soldiers for the dipping thereof. So I am voting the YABU option.

Yes, it's lovely. I boil the eggs for 5 minutes and then take out with a slotted spoon and put into cold water to stop them cooking. The yolk is "jammy" rather than solid and I peel then eat with salad or rice etc

2 soft boiled eggs in egg cups with two slices of toast for them to cut as they wish.

This

I would not shell a soft boiled egg, unless it’s going in a noodle soup

No adult eats boiled eggs with soldiers! 😂 I haven’t had that since I was about 10.

id presume dh meant egg sliced on toast as that’s what he would normally have.

I still have it every time I go and stay with my dad 😂

I’ve never seen boiled eggs on toast. Poached eggs go on toast and boiled eggs go in egg cups in this house. It’s very hard to buy egg cups in the US in my experience so I imagine this is how Americans would serve boiled eggs and toast.

Edited

I wouldn't say it's very hard to buy egg cups in the US, though they certainly aren't as ubiquitous as in the UK. I've never seen eggs served as the OP has done. Most Americans wouldn't understand the term "egg and soldiers," though.

@AsuperblyfeauturedroomandexcellentboiledpotatoesI would have served the eggs in cups but with slices of toast rather than cut up into strips (soldiers). I would have also asked for the person's preference as to how soft they wanted the eggs to be.

Mmmmmmm chuckie eggs.

You mash a soft boiled egg up in a cup with lots of salt, pepper and butter. Don't forget the butter. Then you tip it onto the toast. Lush.

It's a northern/Scottish thing. In my childhood it was always with plain bread (as opposed to pan bread) but I can't seem to get that in southern supermarkets :(

Egg in an egg cup and soldiers.

Please don't take offence. I just meant to add to the conversation, to add context, to make it more interesting etc.

Sorry, OP, but if anyone in my house asked for boiled eggs and toast, I would assume they meant soft boiled eggs and soldiers - although for an adult I would check if they wanted the toast cut into soldiers or if they would do it themselves.

For us, poached eggs go on toast, soft boiled eggs are unshelled and go in an egg cup, and semi-hard or hard boiled eggs are shelled an go on salads or in sandwiches. I've never known anyone do it any different

Bubobubo · 21/06/2026 11:10

I would also be wanting chuckie eggs! I might have to go and make some ... with soldiers of course.

JahanaraBegum · 21/06/2026 11:10

With soliders would be soft-boiled eggs and should be specficied as such. Hard-boiled eggs is on slices of toast.

MistyWater · 21/06/2026 11:11

I do have eggs like this on toast because I like them on toast with avocado but I am not capable of poaching eggs.

MrsPapillon · 21/06/2026 11:11

I’d assume whole toast, because if they’d wanted soldiers they’d have asked for soldiers. They might have planned on scooping out the whole egg onto the toast and having an egg butty.

Chuckie eggs are soft boiled eggs all mashed up, there's no point in soldiers

If they wanted dippy eggs and soldiers they should have asked for dippy eggs and soldiers, this is British law.

Sunnyyetnotsunny · 21/06/2026 11:13

I love boiled including hard boiked on toast with butter.
I never had egg and soldiers. I am not from uk thoigh and that was not norm in my family or where I grewup in general.

I know what they are! I like mine with soldiers! what else would you have with it? Just regular big toast?

Neither of your options.
Am I the only person who has never eaten or made “soldiers” in their life? It’s just not a thing for me (Scottish living in Wales)

Boiled eggs and toast is eggs in egg cups, done to the desired hardness or softness and slices of toast.

I have no choice but to remove the shell from dippy eggs for my 5 year old, he will eat the shell as well if it’s on the plate 😂
