Light-hearted one for a Sunday morning. Settle something between me and my husband.

If you asked someone what they want to eat, and they said "boiled eggs and toast" what would you give them?

YABU - Boiled eggs, in eggcups with toast cut into soldiers IE: boiled eggs and soldiers
YANBU - Boiled eggs (shelled) and slices of toast, because that's what they asked for

There is to me, just because I don't see why you would shell a hard boiled egg but not a soft one
I don't get why it makes a difference
You take more care with soft boiled, but that's it.
Have you never had something like a salad with a soft boiled egg? Would you put it on an egg cup if it with another dish and not toast?
I don't mean to be rude, the "of course" was just my expression of surprise

I often shell a soft boiled egg and have it on toast!

I am definitely very much British
He is half Irish but brought up British

I didn't think he wanted boiled eggs and soldiers because, in my mind, that's a specific dish that you would ask for IE: you'd say "boiled eggs and soldiers" but he didn't, he said "boiled eggs and toast".

It's not something he normally asks for but he's had toothache so wanted something soft and simple. So I didn't have an assumption ready.

I said "you want them soft boiled?" And he said yes.

So I soft boiled the eggs, shelled them, cut them in half and put them on buttered toast. I called from the kitchen "do you want salt and pepper on them?" And he said yes
Would you put salt and pepper on egg and soldiers? Not sure

Any way, he happily ate them, he was just surprised because ause he thought that "boiled eggs and toast" means "boiled eggs and soldiers"

which it doesn't 😄

I’m Irish and I’ve never used the term boiled eggs and soldiers. Or heard anyone say it in real life, only in books or tv or now this thread 😁

It’s possible the term wasn’t ever used in his house growing up?
Though it seems he was familiar with the toast cut into ‘soldiers’, whereas I never ate it like that as a child.

TorroFerney · Today 12:10

Not answering the question but egg adjacent I suppose ,we were in Singapore a few years ago and went for breakfast - now I think the cafe was Malay but you could have peanut butter on toast but they cut it into cubes but if you had soft boiled eggs then the whole egg was soft, so the white as well. I bet that shocked some Brits!

Itiswhysofew · Today 12:23

Without clarifying with them, I'd say YANBU.

JLou08 · Today 12:24

DH would gey boiled eggs and slices of toast because that is how he eats it. I would get it in egg cups. If I was making it for someone I didn't know well, I'd ask them how they want them.

Beachtastic · Today 12:25

I think if I wanted that, I'd be grateful for either, but would defo prefer the eggcup version. "Smashing the head in" is a gruesome aspect of the overall pleasure!

Of course it's a thing. You can shell a soft boiled egg just as you can shell a hard boiled egg. I suppose you just take more care with it.
What he got was something like this but a bit runnier:

Can you make some for me please 😋
This is exactly how I have my eggs. Boiled and shelled and just a bit runny with toast on the side.

TortoiseWhoLovesStrawberries · Today 12:30

Toast cut into soldiers? How old is he?! 😂😂

Mango11 · Today 12:30

In our house it would mean whole hard boiled eggs and toast, but we would de-shell the eggs

Mrscharlieeeee · Today 12:31

Dippy eggs and soldiers. Wouldn’t occur to me they might have meant a hard boiled egg!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · Today 12:46

hereismydog · Today 09:39

Dippy eggs and soldiers.

Even if they meant they wanted something different, nobody is going to be disappointed to receive dippy eggs and soldiers.

I would !
(Not a fan of eggs though )
. It would need to be boiled to oblivion, till the yolk went crumbly
And if you put butter/margarine on my toast soldiers < Envy < not envy >

Blueberries0761 · Today 12:50

Boiled eggs are put in egg cups, soft or hard boiled depending on how each person wants them, and served with slices of toast or brown soda bread and butter in my family. Definitely no dippy eggs and soldiers here.

I didn't think it meant a hard boiled egg. You don't have to put it in an egg cup with soldiers, just because it's soft boiled

BillieWiper · Today 13:03

I'd not put the eggs on the toast, unless they said 'on'. Yeah I'd serve them in egg cups and I guess ask if they want soldiers or not. And ask if they want it runny, soft or hard. And apologise that they may get the wrong one!

'You can't even boil an egg' haha. It's harder than it looks! I'm quite good at cooking other things!

Ponoka7 · Today 13:07

It's been a revelation that adults have dippy eggs. I'd have made chuckie eggs, because I'd expect an adult to mean them and if I saw my DP eating dippy eggs, I'm not sure that I'd want to have sex with him, ever again.

diddl · Today 13:09

Well no it doesn't because soldiers are a specific thing.

But that also doesn't mean that the eggs can't be in an egg cup.

If he usually has eggs in egg cups I would still have done that I think & left the toast whole for him to make into soldiers if he wanted.

Blueberries0761 · Today 13:11

AlexandraImogenSloppe · Today 11:15

Neither of your options.
Am I the only person who has never eaten or made “soldiers” in their life? It’s just not a thing for me (Scottish living in Wales)

Boiled eggs and toast is eggs in egg cups, done to the desired hardness or softness and slices of toast.

No, you're not the only one. I've never had soldiers either or ever heard anyone mention dippy eggs and soldiers. I've only familiar with this from reading about it.

No, why would it be in its shell?
It would be a boiled egg, not in its shell, on toast.
What he got was something like this:

Chop it up a bit and you’ve got what in our family is known as battered egg. A dish invented by my dear late Dad to delight his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Delicious.

Anarchy99 · Today 13:12

If I knew them enough to boil them and make them toast, I assume I would know which option they expected. Or I would ask.

TheAutumnCrow · Today 13:13

It would be a boiled egg, not in its shell, on toast.
What he got was something like this:

I have to say, that looks wonderful!

I'm not surprised you heard the 'delicious' verdict, @Asuperblyfeauturedroomandexcellentboiledpotatoes.

Tauranga · Today 13:15

I would mash boiled eggs onto the buttered toast.

Itsasecretnow · Today 13:19

@Asuperblyfeauturedroomandexcellentboiledpotatoessorry if I’ve missed this in your posts, but is this the first time this has happened? I know you said he had toothache so wanted something soft, but is this the first time you’ve made this for him? Have either of you had/made dippy eggs and soldiers before today?
I would generally expect it to mean soft boiled egg in egg cup (unshelled so that you/they/me get the pleasure in slicing the top off with a teaspoon 😄) and with the toast on the plate. If it was for myself I would cut soldiers but would probably ask partner if they wanted theirs cut into soldiers too. And then - obviously - there needs to be a little pile of seasalt flakes on the side of the plate to sprinkle on or dunk your egg into. To me that is part of the British law of egg n soldiers 😄

eta because I forgot the most important thing and that is the empty shell sitting in the cup at the end so that you have to turn it over and whack a hole in it because that stops the witches being able to use it as a boat to cross the river!!
ok, typing that out, for the first time as an adult has made me realise that sounds a bit crazy. But I promise that was deffo a thing when I was young kid in ‘70s/early ‘80s, but think I probably carried that on for when my dc was little and they’re early 30s now 😂 please someone tell me that ours wasn’t the only family to do this?! It clearly had to be started somewhere! Including having to tell the “story” (maybe a bit of play reenactment😆)when very young! I’m beginning to think maybe my family were nuts, the more I remember!

Snufkin88 · Today 13:20

I wouldn’t assume it was soldiers unless the person was a child . I would ask . Like I assume you would be asking them how well they like the egg cooked . If it’s not soft the soldiers are pointless
