AIBU to challenge the school’s wording about pupils rolling skirts up?

Weekly newsletter today from DC’s secondary school contained a paragraph on uniform including the fact that there have been complaints from the public about “pupils who choose to wear skirts” rolling them up to wear them extremely short. It finishes with asking parents to speak to their children about why this is “not a good idea”.

Now, apart from the fact I assume that they must mean girls, is this not clearly implying that short skirts = making themselves vulnerable and if is, then if anything bad happens as a result it is their own fault? I thought we had moved beyond this kind of nonsense.

I only have boys at the school not girls but want to write to the head to point out how utterly sexist this is. DH agrees with me pov but thinks I shouldn’t write. AIBU?

They might have whilst at school but I doubt it. They all wore tights at our schools anyway so 'sweaty cheeks' and these traumatising gussets would never have been visible. I wouldn't ever judge girls as nastily as has been evident on this thread though whatever the uniform was.

My point is teachers should teach. Full stop. I have no interest in their opinions on school attire or men's 'uncomfortable feelings'.

The right colour and emblem should suffice.

Teachers should teach yes. And also discipline rule breakers. Most people in work can handle multiple responsibilities.

Teachers can and should do many other things. Give career advice, help plan societies. Run and organise trips. Teachers should do safeguarding and do pastoral support.

CricketIsASport · 22/06/2026 18:57

I don't understand what @Gloriia wants. Her DDs followed the rules. She supports enforcement of a dress code. Just you're not supposed to enforce it too hard or something?

The more Gloriia posts, the more I wonder if she is also under a misapprehension about what's being discussed here. Some pps are under the impression that what is being criticised by others is the rolling up of skirts to be a bit shorter than regulation.

No - that's not what I'm on about. I just wonder if Gloriia realises this because the two things are of a different order. Nearly all teenage girls might hitch up their skirts a bit and if they have opaque tights on, it's usually a non-issue.

But I cannot believe anyone, least of all a parent, would condone the extremely revealing kind of skirt and no-tights (and sometimes very little knicker...) which is under discussion.

Actually having started the thread about the wording of an email I can confirm that it was indeed about the act of girls “rolling their skirts up to be a bit shorter than regulation”. I think I may also have said somewhere that the majority of the girls doing so wear black tights too. Perhaps I should have made that clearer.

Nevertheless it is astonishing to me how quickly the majority of posters jumped to talking about “sweaty arse cheeks”, “flashing knickers” and “privates on display” and pages and pages of similar language including comparing girls and young women to primates. Yes as someone pointed out earlier, this is a site that allows comment and debate and differing of opinions but some people on this thread have lost the run of themselves.

How did your teacher friend respond when you showed her the newsletter and said you you thinking of challenging the school @GreenSalon ?

but I should say few are wearing skirts so short you can see underwear and the majority wear tights.

well you said this very early on and I guess it set the tone

We're talking about secondary school children. So, young girls.

Anyway. Young girls/teens/young women whatever. None are like primates waving their 'sweaty arse cheeks' about to 'communicate something'

They are intentionally mooning. Bad in boys, bad in girls. Don’t care who does it, mooning is indecent exposure and as such not something i want to see. The end.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 19/06/2026 18:02

No I wouldn’t complain. My child’s school has the same problem with girls rolling their skirts up so high that knickers are on display at the back. It’s such a problem the school are considering a uniform change to trousers only.

This is the logical solution. Stop the problem once and for all.

Yes I said few. Not a few.

Usually most people understand that phrase to mean such a small number it is hardly worth bothering about.

PP on here might thing we should just ignore they are doing whatever they want with their bodies right?

Impossible when thrust at you!

I think the simple answer is to say that skirts must be knee length, and no underwear must be on show - and this applies to both sexes. Break the rules - get a detention.

Gloriia · 22/06/2026 18:44

I certainly wasn't a 'trial for my own teachers' thanks. Ae you suggesting I'm thick now that I'm the only one to challenge your weird monkey likening?

Likening girls behaviour to that of moneys is neither nice, appropriate or relevant. Did I see you were an ex teacher?

There are definitely similarities, we are all animals!

But you raised having seen skirts so short that you can see underwear
and my point is…that set the ball rolling on all the descriptions you find so awful

Plantchoc · 22/06/2026 19:30

Did you teacher friend say you should or should not challenge the school?

Then they will be in trouble and those who followed the uniform rule and dress code have nothing to worry about

What? So if you 'only' see a few girls exposing themselves, it doesn't matter?

Does that also apply to the dirty old men flashing in the park - that the vast majority of men there are perfectly decently dressed and acting completely harmlessly, so the odd one doing that is nothing to care about?

Please don't equate young girls with sex offenders. This thread is going from bad to worse.

I want posters to desist using appalling language and descriptions regarding school girls. I thought I'd been abundantly clear yet here we are.

The language is accurate though? These school girls are dressing very inappropriately and are being called out for their inappropriate behaviour. Perhaps they should dress normally, it's not that hard to do!

Well then report the posts you are so affronted by

but most of your posts are
not about language but rather… hey, the schools should just chillax and focus on TEACHING

Who cares about a uniform policy and dressing appropriately am I right?

Uniform policy good. Dressing appropriately good. Saying it's 'so the men don't feel uncomfortable' bad. Likening young girls to monkeys and sex offenders bad. Ditto using appalling sneery language like 'sweaty arse cheeks'.

Surely, surely that's clear by now?

Do you not think men/young boys would feel uncomfortable in professional working environment (which is what school is) where they are all dressed smartly and respectfully if there are a bunch of young girls inappropriately dressed?

Flashing is wrong and bad, showing your bare arse cheek like a money is rank.

Dress respectfully and no such comparison will be made?

CricketIsASport · 22/06/2026 21:51

These words are only being said because the dress sense is so appalling

They're not 'young girls' at secondary school - they're adolescents, and may only be two or three years away from being actual adults.

Aside from the age, what is the actual difference, though? If somebody deliberately goes out in public displaying their private areas to everybody, whether they want to see them or not? They may not get the exact same kind of 'thrill', but they're obviously doing it for a purpose.
