AIBU to challenge the school’s wording about pupils rolling skirts up?

Weekly newsletter today from DC’s secondary school contained a paragraph on uniform including the fact that there have been complaints from the public about “pupils who choose to wear skirts” rolling them up to wear them extremely short. It finishes with asking parents to speak to their children about why this is “not a good idea”.

Now, apart from the fact I assume that they must mean girls, is this not clearly implying that short skirts = making themselves vulnerable and if is, then if anything bad happens as a result it is their own fault? I thought we had moved beyond this kind of nonsense.

I only have boys at the school not girls but want to write to the head to point out how utterly sexist this is. DH agrees with me pov but thinks I shouldn’t write. AIBU?

Enforce knee length skirts…which they then roll up…

Multiple detentions will unravel this.

Having seen literal butt cheeks of girls going to the local comp here, I wish to God they'd sort it out. I don't want to see any kids bum on my daily commute. It is inappropriate and reflects poorly on the school. I'd feel the same if the boys had their bums hanging out.

boys have been doing so for years with the ludicrous 'sag' fashion 👎🏾

Teachers should stfu about shirts and trousers. Teach our kids, keep your unwanted and misogynistic opinions to yourself.

And maybe parents need to do the same, and parent a bit more??

I think teachers might have a more informed perspective on this than you.
And apart from the exposed flesh controversy, it's good for teenagers to understand what's appropriate in different contexts. They'll be at work one day.

What's fine for a party or club isn't necessarily OK in school - or any context where people have no choice about being there. I think covering you private parts is a basic consideration for other people. Perving, as you put it, doesn't come into it. It's not about 'perving', it's about dressing appropriately for the context.

'Sweaty arse prints'. The bile and vitriol aimed at young girls is absolutely appalling.

They all wear tights, usually thick black tights. These thongs and sweaty arse cheeks are maybe a figment of a rather fevered imagination?

They absolutely do not. I drive past 3 high schools on my way to work and all have girls wearing their skirts barely longer than their pants. It s really unsavoury and like many I don’t want to see it.All are ignoring the school dress code. Would love to see the reaction if boys wore voluminous shorts barely longer than their pants.

Nel13f · 20/06/2026 20:32

And this is a ridiculous thread .

To an extent I do agree with this, but not ankle skirts they're absurd, uncomfortable and extremely warm. Girls should just be allowed to wear trousers if they want to.

Trousers or a knee-high skirt are perfectly fine. Boys in full uniform.

Any foul play with your uniform results in serious consequences.

It's an easy solution; however, schools do not want to deal with the backlash.

Absurd!

I witnessed this sight more times than I care to see while spending time in London.

chirrupybird · 20/06/2026 20:35

I think it was quite clever to let the parents decide in what way it is a bad idea, some may think it's sluttish and gives men the wrong idea, others may think you may be bringing the school into disrepute (you are a role model for the school) or you are possibly revealing much more than you realise of your underwear and more, bending or climbing stairs etc. Or if the desired affect is to make you look more attractive a huge roll of material around your waist does nothing for you.

Lazy parenting.

Astoundingly, many parents do not want to 'parent' their kids. Many wouldn't even know where to begin.

In summer? Not here… in winter, yes, but for the last months it’s been socks, no tights. hence the problem.
And yes, their bum is on display, so is their thong. Which means their bare bum cheeks are on chairs, benches etc. Yuck

I wouldn’t want anybody’s sweaty arse cheeks on display or on seats - boys, girls, men or women. It’s really unpleasant.

spicysalad · 20/06/2026 20:43

I disagree with school uniform ridiculous rules in general. But I don’t want to see anyone’s arse cheeks when going about my business.

Needmorelego · 20/06/2026 20:49

BlueFahrenheit · 20/06/2026 20:05

I echo this.

Schools are pandering to fashion requirements. Girls' uniforms are already sexualised.

Bring back traditional uniforms.

What do you mean by "traditional uniforms"?
That is part of the problem - schools HAVE gone back to the "traditional" blazer, tie, tartan/plaid skirt, white socks combo - which is basically the stereotype "naughty schoolgirl" uniform (🤮🤢).
Do you mean go back to the 90s style of loose polo shirts and casual trousers?

While that fashion trend is ridiculous (I believe it stems from hip hop culture where boys were emulating the loose orange jumpsuit uniform that's worn in US prisons), at least their flesh is covered!

I don't understand "feminists" who insist that girls and women should be allowed wear anything they want, no matter if their arses are hanging out in a school or work environment.

Clothing is power. Look at any movies set in ancient Rome, the masters are robed but the slaves are practically naked. Look at hip hop videos, the rappers are fully clothed but surrounded by practically naked women tweaking their arse. Look at those Robert Palmer and Robin Thicke music videos, they're fully suited & booted but surrounded by practically naked women.

That's what feminists don't seem to get: Clothing is power, lack of clothing is subservience.

Well they should …. Mostly. By that I mean dressing appropriately for the occasion.

I cant see any arse there, ridiculous as it looks. Girls dressing like that would be a huge improvement on the current thong and arsecheeks fashion.

CoffeeCantata · 20/06/2026 21:15

Anyone who thinks exposing your arse cheeks to the world is a feminist statement has drunk the proverbial Kool-aid.

All the young women are doing (although few realise it) is conforming to a the male gaze and pressures which have come from porno culture.

Fashion which is inspired by pornography isn't a feminist statement.

Boys don't usually expose their erogenous zones (the sag fashion tended to show unsavoury greying underpants rather than buttocks IME)...yet somehow, girls feel the pressure.

Maybe concentrate on the road rather than young girl's skirts?

Dress codes are of course important. A skirt and tights should suffice. All the repetition about 'arse cheeks' on this thread is quite disturbing.

Gloriia · 20/06/2026 21:23

As an aside if dress codes in school are so important I vouch for teachers to keep their ugly tatts covered.

Oh I’m concentrating on the road but when you’re crawling along in gridlock and they’re congregating alongside cars, running across the road etc it’s hard not to notice. The repetition about “arse cheeks” is because that is what is on show. It’s pretty unpleasant.I have a daughter and I wouldn’t subject all and sundry to her cheeks either. Thankfully I’ve raised her to have more self respect and thought for others.

Yep this!

Allonthesametrain · 20/06/2026 21:30

Please believe me, as a teacher, this is an appeal for parental support. We know they leave your house before rolling it up, then we intervene, then they roll it up again on way to next lesson.

It really isn't the most pleasant sight to see the buttocks of young girls, especially when on duty and monitoring going upstairs behaviour, which I can imagine for male teachers is even more uncomfortable.

One experience which made me feel particularly disgusted was a y8 student walking to school with her skirt extremely high, a white van passing and shouting obscenities and wolf whistles. I reported this to pastoral manager and she explained to her how this does in fact make her a possible object of vulnerability.

No need to analyse the wording, it's not sexist, it states the point. The only effect it will have is you will be an over reactive parent and precious time will have to be spent to re word as suitable for only you.

Do you really not have anything more important to focus your energy on?

BlueFahrenheit · 20/06/2026 21:31

I believe it's called the 'baddie culture'.

Wearing underwear that resembles shoe laces.

T1Dmama · 20/06/2026 21:32

Girls/women SHOULD be able to wear whatever they want and be safe, BUT sadly we can not!
it is never a woman’s fault if she is attacked, however let’s be honest this isn’t an ideal world and women do have to avoid putting ourselves at risk.
What I mean by that…. Is in an ‘ideal world’ we should be able to walk around naked at 2am, alone, through a poorly lit park…. BUT we know and appreciate that doing that would put us in danger, so therefore we wouldn’t do it!
We as women sadly do still and likely will forever more need to adjust our behaviours to keep ourself safe - safe from men!
