AIBU to challenge the school’s wording about pupils rolling skirts up?

Weekly newsletter today from DC’s secondary school contained a paragraph on uniform including the fact that there have been complaints from the public about “pupils who choose to wear skirts” rolling them up to wear them extremely short. It finishes with asking parents to speak to their children about why this is “not a good idea”.

Now, apart from the fact I assume that they must mean girls, is this not clearly implying that short skirts = making themselves vulnerable and if is, then if anything bad happens as a result it is their own fault? I thought we had moved beyond this kind of nonsense.

I only have boys at the school not girls but want to write to the head to point out how utterly sexist this is. DH agrees with me pov but thinks I shouldn’t write. AIBU?

This isn't exactly a new phenomenon: my Mum and her mates were doing exactly the same thing in the 60s. It's teenagers seeing how far they can push the limits. They did it in the days of the ancient Greeks, and they'll probably still be doing it in colonies on other planets, if we ever get there.

Allseeingallknowing · 20/06/2026 21:35

There seems to be a trend for sprayed on clothing that’s flesh coloured and very form fitting so as to look nude. Hard for anyone not to see that! Like the school girls it’s like a form of defiance.

The skirts although short were longer then. They were not displaying buttocks,

True, but I bet they'd have done it if they thought they could get away with it.

As an aside if dress codes in school are so important I vouch for teachers to keep their ugly tatts covered.

Vouch for them?
That makes no sense. Anyway, teachers aren't at school, they're at work.

Gloriia · 20/06/2026 21:41

'It really isn't the most pleasant sight to see the buttocks of young girls, especially when on duty and monitoring going upstairs behaviour, which I can imagine for male teachers is even more uncomfortable'

I manage to walk upstairs without staring at the arse of the person in front why can't you? If male staff feel 'uncomfortable' around young girls they should seek alternative employment.

Sont be ridiculous. Anybody on stairs below somebody with a skirt no longer than their pants is going to get a view they don’t want.

Male teachers shouldn’t have to be made to feel uncomfortable, plus female teachers and pupils of both sexes probably feel the same, having sights like that thrust in their faces!

No I wouldn’t complain. My child’s school has the same problem with girls rolling their skirts up so high that knickers are on display at the back. It’s such a problem the school are considering a uniform change to trousers only.

I’ve asked our head to change it to trousers for all. She won’t because apparently ‘parents will complain!’

I honestly think some parents like their DD’s having their arses on show.😞

Wide pleated skirts ... cant be rolled up

This is the problem. Head teachers don't want to deal with the backlash.

DeadSpace3 · 20/06/2026 22:05

JFC. Do you know how much work teaching staff all the way from teaching assisant to headteacher have to do?

Rules are made for a good reason so stop wasting other people's valuable time and stop being THAT parent.

I know people keep saying things like this have happened for years but not in my area in my school in the 90s it didn't happen in my daughters school it was the odd child my son has just finished high school he said its rife so something happened in the last thirty years to make this a thing

Ds high school has just changed the uniform to pleated skirts only the amount of parents who complained was ridiculous for once the school said tough titty thems the rules adhere to them or (fuking) leave

Yes my DS school had the pleated skirts only .

Having seen literal butt cheeks of girls going to the local comp here, I wish to God they'd sort it out. I don't want to see any kids bum on my daily commute. It is inappropriate and reflects poorly on the school. I'd feel the same if the boys had their bums hanging out.

This. It’s about 14 years since my own dc left secondary and I happened to go into a shop near their old school the other day. I was completely shocked by the bum cheeks hanging out and the view of knickers from the front. This has nothing to do with autonomy over choice of clothing and everything to do with pornography and child exploitation.
I fail to understand how schools and parents are allowing this to happen.

Don’t be ridiculous. In all my years of education and employment I’ve never had to avert my eyes to avoid seeing a naked arse in front of me. That you think it’s acceptable says volumes.

Mayana1 · 20/06/2026 22:16

Plenty of girls in UK looks hideous. I am glad I have a boy, I would never let my daughter wear a skirt that short to school. Or anywhere else. It is unappropriate. The way teenage girls dress today it is often tasteless. Make up, nails, breasts out... You will be very unreasonable saying anything. I have seen a girl who's skirt barely covered her bottom. Do the parents not notice that? Is it normal to go to school like this now days??? In UK? Unbelievable!

MrsPositivity1 · 20/06/2026 22:16

Seeing the gusset of someone’s tights is not appropriate for any setting, never mind a school

ProBonoPublico · 20/06/2026 22:18

ChalkOutlines · 20/06/2026 19:35

So what? It teaches girls to just sit there and look pretty. Because as soon as they move, their bums is on show. It forces girls (through peer pressure) into following damaging trends and standards of “beauty”. It looks fucking ridiculous when you can’t walk down the street without holding your skirt with your hand. There’s a mind fuck with that too. They obviously know it’s inappropriate and not fine, otherwise they’d own it and walk normally, not a care in the world. It diminishes moments like getting an award or something, when they’re tethering up the stairs , again hand on their bum to keep their skirt in place. It’s not a necessity. Often it’s not even a real choice. They, don’t run , jump , muck about. They sit, stand or slowly walk. Sit there and look pretty love. Careful. Awkward. Uncomfortable. Fuck. That. Shit.

Do you really think that dropping "fuck" in all the time somehow makes your post more powerful? It doesn't - it rather indicates that you think you'll be ignored if you don't swear all the time, which is somewhat immature.

So please have a little consideration for the rest of us who don't feel the need to swear and don't wish to read other posters doing so.

So ask your mum if her buttocks and pudenda were on display. I know what her answer will be.

The parents would be livid if you did that now!

I wasn’t the headteacher doing any measuring. No parents I ever heard of complained.

BlueFahrenheit · 20/06/2026 22:23

It's concerning how many parents think it's appropriate for teenage school girls to be roaming the streets, leaving nothing to the imagination.

Skirts resembling a belt alongside ill-fitting underwear resembling shoe laces or a fishing net.

I would certainly not want my kids attending the school. The head teacher isn't strong enough to lead the school.
