AIBU to challenge the school’s wording about pupils rolling skirts up?

Weekly newsletter today from DC’s secondary school contained a paragraph on uniform including the fact that there have been complaints from the public about “pupils who choose to wear skirts” rolling them up to wear them extremely short. It finishes with asking parents to speak to their children about why this is “not a good idea”.

Now, apart from the fact I assume that they must mean girls, is this not clearly implying that short skirts = making themselves vulnerable and if is, then if anything bad happens as a result it is their own fault? I thought we had moved beyond this kind of nonsense.

I only have boys at the school not girls but want to write to the head to point out how utterly sexist this is. DH agrees with me pov but thinks I shouldn’t write. AIBU?

I think it’s a great idea to write and it’s because you have boys that is even a better one . Maybe teach that misogynistic head teacher why blaming girls for possible sexual abuse is wrong

Where have you all been? I was rolling my skirt up when I was 15 am 76 now
The only person who complained was my father !!!

I can guarantee no way were you rolling them up as short as they are now

not. A. Chance

Oh hush now with this nonsense

thankfully the op has seen the error of her ways

They need strict skirt length rules such as your skirt mustn’t be more than X cm above the knee and mustn’t be more than Ycm below the knee .
That was the rule at my girls schools .
This allows for growth spurts and some parents possibly getting a long skirt to last their child longer ( hopefully)
When I was young there was a fashion for midi skirts at high school for a while , some girls wore theirs too long and were tripping up on the stairs on them .
We weren’t allowed trousers back then .

Monty36 · 20/06/2026 18:54

Thankfully it wasn’t a thing when I was at school. We did have a headteacher who walked round with a ruler though. An inch out of line and you were sent home to change.

Parents don't comply though. It doesn't matter how many letters we send out, reminders, detentions, the most common parental response is "we pick our battles".
In other words, they don't want to do anything.

The parents would be livid if you did that now!

Teachers should stfu about shirts and trousers. Teach our kids, keep your unwanted and misogynistic opinions to yourself.

I see school girls wearing short skirts. So. What.

Teach young boys and men not to perv at young girls should be the priority.

To be fair… it does sound a bit creepy!

Like majority of others, I think YBU. I rolled up my skirt in high school like everyone else but the current situation is inappropriate and indecent. If roles were reversed and boys were walking around with their bums hanging out, there would be no debate - I’m pretty sure we would all agree it was not acceptable school attire.

Orangebadger · 20/06/2026 19:05

It’s about self respect and I bloody hate the skirts pulled up to reveal underwear. I have a DD 14 who truly does not do this and thinks it looks awful. She likes to wear big and baggy clothes. But she is certainly an outsider because of her refusal to pull her skirt up. I personally think they should just all wear trousers as standard now. No I would not write. It’s a subject that needs addressing, maybe not blaming the girls for boys behaviour but just dressing with a bit of self respect. The same for boys who show half their arse but that’s generally not in school uniforms.

What a well behaved young lady you were

ConstantlyTired312 · 20/06/2026 19:08

Secondary teacher here - I've had to ask girls to roll down their skirts because you can see their underwear, so the school are not being unreasonable. Check the uniform policy - it will probably state that skirts need to ne knee length

UnaGatita · 20/06/2026 19:12

Having to navigate conversations with girls who think displaying most of their anatomy to the rest of the school is fine, I’d say this is a welcome letter. I’m fed up with having to defend the poor eyes of everyone else who is accused of being a pervert if they happen to see unwelcome flesh.

Teach boys and girls to dress respectfully at school. Young boys will obviously look, and I don't blame them. It's in their DNA.

onedogatoddlerandababy · 20/06/2026 19:17

Well I agree.

however, girls are wearing skirts rolled up to the point I can see their arse cheeks. And outside of beach/night club I honestly don’t think rolling a skirt to that length is a good idea, not because it will lead to them being assaulted, but mainly because it looks ridiculous

and I extend this to boys belting their trousers up below their arse cheeks so I see their pants.

just put your arses away kids 😂

Violet63 · 20/06/2026 19:17

At least the school is tackling it. Don't complain about wording which does not affect you, or your sons. What would you gain?

YourShyLion · 20/06/2026 19:19

They're not wrong tbh.

You might as well tell the sun not to rise! Other people feel uncomfortable at girls dressing ( or undressing) like this , can’t walk about diverting their gaze all the time! “unwanted mysogynistic opinions”? I would take it as wanting girls to be aware of how they dress, to be protected, to have decency!

Lougle · 20/06/2026 19:21

This is ridiculous. Girls need to be aware that whilst they aren't responsible for the actions of men, they can influence the likelihood of being the subject of a man's attention. Also, that nobody wants to see their buttocks except men who have an unhealthy interest in young girls.

NellieJean · 20/06/2026 19:23

I genuinely despair of some parents.

Lonelyisthenight · 20/06/2026 19:24

I think this is called dress code? And dressing appropriately? It's a school setting, etc etc etc. If boys were exposing their bodies at school we'd be calling them pervs, wouldn't we?

Gloriia · 20/06/2026 19:29

'Young boys will obviously look, and I don't blame them. It's in their DNA'

'It's in their dna' Confused. Enabling and excusing is the problem.

Short skirts should not cause such an attack of the vapours.

How do college boys and male college staff cope?! College kids don't bother with school regulation 2000 denier tights to hide those offensive gussets.

So what? It teaches girls to just sit there and look pretty. Because as soon as they move, their bums is on show. It forces girls (through peer pressure) into following damaging trends and standards of “beauty”. It looks fucking ridiculous when you can’t walk down the street without holding your skirt with your hand. There’s a mind fuck with that too. They obviously know it’s inappropriate and not fine, otherwise they’d own it and walk normally, not a care in the world. It diminishes moments like getting an award or something, when they’re tethering up the stairs , again hand on their bum to keep their skirt in place. It’s not a necessity. Often it’s not even a real choice. They, don’t run , jump , muck about. They sit, stand or slowly walk. Sit there and look pretty love. Careful. Awkward. Uncomfortable. Fuck. That. Shit.

What school regulation tights? They only wear tights in the winter, like most women and girls!
