Things you hate or find overrated in hot weather

. parents draping sheets over their DC in their pushchairs. It overheats the area

. BBQs especially when used too much lighter fluid. As it makes food taste of that. Plus need to BBQ about four meals worth of meat. if you did eat inside

. Going to crowded beaches. Struggle to park, queues for everything.

Yours?

One summer tradition on MN that could bemuse but sometimes irritates me:

When it's hot weather, MNers moaning about their celtic heritage red hair pale skin "I'm not made for this" whinging .
..
I have lots of red haired scottish+Irish heritage relatives who were born & bred always lived in very sunny sometimes hot places. They never moan about how special they are and ask for pity (ok, might want pity on other grounds, but not bcz of red hair & can easily get sunburnt). They all are grateful not to live somewhere with cold winters. No B.F.D.

Ice cream vans, a rip off really.

ourSusie · 20/06/2026 13:45

Like our kitten has done today. It's easy to handle heat when you know what to do.

Kittens don't have to go to work.

define “lots “

Dad, 2xuncles, 1xaunt, 2x 1st cousins, 2x1st cousins 2x removed. All with natural red/strawberry blonde red hair.
Ages currently 23-83 yo.
I probably missed someone else who is red haired. There are pale skin blondes too. I have ~ 30 first cousins.

3254 hours of sunshine/yr says online, where they live.
Median temp yr round is about 21 deg C (?)

ps: I can only think of one of those redhaired relatives I listed who isn't, or hasn't been, passionate about doing outdoor sport: American football, Soccer, softball, golf, tennis...

I'm in Paris and it's horrendous. There's about 3 hours between 6-9am when it's bearable, and I try to cool the flat in that window, but I've had to escape to a Pret with aircon to feel OK this afternoon. I feel nauseous all the time, I've slept for about 6 hours total since Wednesday evening and there is no way to consistently cool yourself down. It won't get below 30 until 10pm. I gave in and booked an airbnb with aircon for three days from tomorrow, which should at least get me through the worst of it. If I wasn't moving I think I'd be properly ill by Monday.

Shufflebumnessie · 20/06/2026 14:20

Things I don't like:
The feeling of suncream.
Having to slather the children in suncream before school (I don't need anything else to do at that time in the morning).
People thinking they don't need deodorant.
Men walking around without their tops on (doesn't matter what their physique is, I don't want to see it).
Polyester clothing masquerading as lightweight, summer clothing (this is a particular issue now I'm wading through perimenopause).
Neighbours burning things in their garden (I'm looking at you, neighbours who used to burn plastic on their bonfire!!).
Not being able to sleep because it's too hot.

Things that are over rated:
Actually sitting out in the sun (unless I'm on holiday & sitting by the pool).

Believe it or not, I actually like hot weather.

Well no you're wrong, and I find it amazing how many people repeat this. Most men I see with their tops off are lean and muscular and obviously work out regularly. That's what's so annoying about it!

This is London, though. Quite possibly in other areas men are less toned...

No no! We’re also allowed to have gyms in the rest of the country believe it or not and also access to good food!

There is an ice cream van that goes around where I live and seen it drive past kids and doesn’t stop. Then drives around roads without stopping.

What is the point in that

oooh, lovely! thanks for you comprehensive reply - so many cousins

if this is California, with its Mediterranean climate, outdoor lifestyle,
wonderful fresh food, sea breezes, it’s much healthier and better managed
than hot days in Britain which are invariably sudden, muggy, airless, ennervating

I find the chimes sinister, like clowns are. Fred West was an ice cream man.

Maybe selling wraps?

Including the ones in the premium ranges? I usually buy the bag of cherry tomatoes but once in a while, I get the nicer ones. I find the normal large ones - get in a pack of 6 are usually bland.

I eat salad of some description. Including after Xmas with the cold cuts.

Happy to report loads in sainsbury and my newly discovered small 🥒 (not those mini ones)

have you seen the young twins on you tube, running away from the
ice cream van,
“9 quid!” and he wants cash!
they made the news!
so outraged!

SqueakyFromme · 20/06/2026 17:22

@oursusie not seen that it sounds funny. Expensive considering the waitrose premium ice cream tubs are half the price. Im pretty sure that's just powder mixed up to be malleable in those vans as well
But It's tradition I guess but something about ice cream vans unsettles me like I don't trust them

Youdontseehow · 20/06/2026 17:23

south of England people banging on about the hot weather when it’s fekn cold and rainy in Scotland

SAzure · 20/06/2026 17:30

Humidity.

Being tired through not being able to sleep at night.

The pressure to "get out and enjoy the hot weather'

Constant bombardment on Facebook from weather pages hyping up how hot it's going to be.

Other people.

Each to their own but I don't get why people go to the beach to sit and roast all day amongst hundreds of others, with no shade.

I'm currently in Northumberland thinking "what heatwave?"

Me too. It happens every year, make provision for it and get over it.

Hot weather makes me and any others feel really unwell.
Nothing I’ve tried so far helps. The only thing that I’m aware of that does help is - the actual temperature going down!
Other than that the only other option I know of would be to move many miles further north.
Id love to know what other marvellous “provisions” you would recommend. (Air con isn’t a solution)

SqueakyFromme · 20/06/2026 18:26

Very hot here in Dorset. Not looking forward to bed and I'm very tired as last two nights have been stifling

hostleg · 20/06/2026 20:30

Have you tried those cooling towels? You wet them, wring them and then snap the fabric. Cooling in an instant.

I may get a cooling blanket.

Im worried about asthma is going to be an issue for me. Since I had covid twice my body is not suited for UK hot weather. Yet I’m fine abroad as been to Cyprus and it was 41c
