To think if Keir Starmer is ousted there should be a general election

I think the set-up should be changed and if the PM is voted out by his party then there needs to be a general election. I didn't vote for very left wing policies which will happen if Andy Burnham replaces the PM. And neither would have I ever voted for the dreadful Liz Truss who must be the absolute worst PM we've ever had.

No. We don't vite for the PM. That's not how it works

LatteLady · Yesterday 06:39

Funny it did not happen for May, Johnson, Truss or indeed for Sunak. We vote for local MPs not party leaders, unless you are a member of the party.

LattePatty · Yesterday 06:43

Whatever party is in opposition is always outraged when the PM changes and says there should be an election. But funnily enough they don’t call an election when they’re the party in power.

Sunandsunshine · Yesterday 06:44

You must be a total masochist OP.

Do you REALLY want to put us through the total hell of another General Election?

WonderingWanda · Yesterday 06:44

I just did a quick Google so not sure how reliable this figure is but it says the cost of the last general election was £94.5m. That is a cost we can live without every 5 mins while politicians throw each other under the bus all day long. I wish they would all just get on with bloody governing rather than constant one upmanship. None of the parties are better than each other. They all have slighty different politics and priorities but they would all have to deal with the same shit show and essentially try to make something out of nothing.

We need some proper long term governing that they all agree on. Not reactive vote winning headliner policies.

No

Pedallleur · Yesterday 06:46

4 changes of PM on the last Government. You vote for the politics of the Party. It shouldn't be a cult of personality otherwise you are in trouble.

HumberSquid · Yesterday 06:51

No

TeflonBoot · Yesterday 06:55

We do not vote for a Prime Minister but a party. Unless you live in Liz Truss's constituency you would not have been able to vote for her.

CurlewKate · Yesterday 06:57

We’re a Parliamentary democracy.

GotTheIckWithMe · Yesterday 06:57

No - definitely not. Reform need enough time in local government to mess it up before the next general election , if it’s too soon they will win which will be a disaster for the country.

This. I’d hoped that with the majority Labour had at the last election we’d have had some stability.

Theimpossiblegirl · Yesterday 06:59

Yes, like every time a new conservative pm was appointed. Oh wait...

Cooshawn · Yesterday 06:59

You vote for your local MP, hopefully at least partially based on the party mandate. The mandate is owned at party level, not by the leader, so still carries when the party leadership changes.

You can vote on party leadership by being a member of the party. Or affiliated unions in the case of Labour.

fuckeditupbadly · Yesterday 06:59

I think its about time, given that two party politics is long gone that we take another hard look at a PR system. Not really for ideological reasons but to provide a more cross party approach that might allow for longer term.planing and solutions to the huge, generational problems we now face. Social and elderly care, an unsustainable NHS, an education system.that is totally fucked and not fit for purpose. Changing everything every 5 years allows no-one to commit to the depth of change required. Constant elections are expensive, distracting and are utterly counter-prodictuve.

WheresMyHatGone · Yesterday 07:00

Do you know how much money it costs to run a general election? And you want to waste money on it every time there is a change of PM?
You vote for the party not the PM.

Anarchy99 · Yesterday 07:02

Well no because we don’t elect a prime minister. We elect MPs and the leader of the party with the most elected MPs becomes prime minister

BelleEpoque27 · Yesterday 07:03

Nope. That is not how it works in this country - you vote for a party, not a PM.

I just hope Andy Burnham's ego doesn't tell him to call a general election (IF he wins a leadership challenge.. I'm not sure he will).

5128gap · Yesterday 07:08

No. I think Andy Burnham should continue to become PM, just as planned. I'm extremely happy with that and don't want any obstacles in the way. The last thing I'd want is a sudden change of rules to prevent it after swapping and changing PM at will up until now.
If we are to have such a change it needs to be agreed ahead of time, not because people want to obstruct a lawful process they don't like the expected outcome of.
If a leadership challenge triggered a GE, there would be no challenge and we'd carry on as we are under Starmer.

Backedoffhackedoff · Yesterday 07:09

No that’s not how uk politics works. We don’t vote for a PM

This!!

fuckeditupbadly · Yesterday 07:29

I just realised who the OP is. Very likely wanting a GE in the hope Reform win and women go back to being home-makers who put their husbands slippers out and a drink in his hand as he was through the door.

Seasidecatlady · Yesterday 07:33

You know perfectly well how the system works.

You don't vote directly for a PM in a general election.

The Tories went through a series of PMs after they won the general election.

The fact that you don't like Labour, are scared that Burnham could make a good PM and want Reform in does not mean you can change the system to suit you!

knitnerd90 · Yesterday 07:33

No this is how a parliamentary system works and has always worked.

Viviennemary · Yesterday 09:17

I know perfectly well what the system is. I think it's wrong. I wouldnt have voted for a Labour party with Jeremy Corbyn in charge. And I probably wouldn't vote for it if Andy Burnham is PM. So why should I be stuck with him leading the country to the left.
