To think if Keir Starmer is ousted there should be a general election

I think the set-up should be changed and if the PM is voted out by his party then there needs to be a general election. I didn't vote for very left wing policies which will happen if Andy Burnham replaces the PM. And neither would have I ever voted for the dreadful Liz Truss who must be the absolute worst PM we've ever had.

Just listened to Andy Burnham. He's going to change the country. Arrogant pig headed and power mad. He thinks he knows what's good for us. It's a total insult to voters. Did anybody vote for Andy Burnam's leftie agenda. I didn't.

but the voters got the country where it is by choosing the leaders they have

And no doubt you were raging on Mumsnet about Liz Truss coming in without a GE and trashing people's mortgages... You did, didn't you?

I thought Liz Truss was a disgrace and a total idiot. And a handful of people voting for her. A lot worse than Andy Burnham will be. (Might be?)

I don’t agree there should be a GE. As others have said we vote for the party not the PM. There is something very odd though in having a PM who didn’t stand for Parliament on the current manifesto and has never been in that government, and had no hand in the manifesto. It will be interesting to see how closely Burnham sticks to the (fairly nebulous) manifesto that currently exists and how he will tailor it to his own priorities for the country. Interesting times!

No - definitely not. Reform need enough time in local government to mess it up before the next general election , if it’s too soon they will win which will be a disaster for the country.

Perfectly put.

I know perfectly well what the system is. I think it's wrong. I wouldnt have voted for a Labour party with Jeremy Corbyn in charge. And I probably wouldn't vote for it if Andy Burnham is PM. So why should I be stuck with him leading the country to the left.

I would'nt have voted for any of the last 4 tory PMs, but nothing i could do about it so nothing you can do about this either

Because this is how parliamentary democracy works.

Maybe do some calming breathing.

He's not got time to change the country, the next general will be 3 years max.

You're panicking, but the change will be minute compared to Brexit, COVID and probably won't match Truss' impact.

We do not vote for a Prime Minister but a party. Unless you live in Liz Truss's constituency you would not have been able to vote for her.

The problem is, within the same party there are radically different ideas as to how to run a country. I think people voted Labour last time as it presented itself more centrist. Andy Burnham’s politics are certainly not that! If he’s successful we could end up with a system that no one voted for and very few really want.

But did you post on Mumsnet about her and demand a GE? Did you demand a GE over May, Sunak, John's and going back, Brown? If not, then why now?

And do you really want the country to spend tens of millions on an election we don't need?

Don't be silly 🙄

I think pretty much all of these either didn't change the policy direction hugely on taking office, or had a GE relatively soon after taking office. I suspect Truss would have called a GE in short order if she had been successful.

Leaders who did not fight a GE to get to their PM position don't have a history of a long tenure.

Tryingtokeepgoing · Yesterday 14:08

Well, it was certainly the case that in opposition the Labour Party was very vocal about the need for a general election every time the conservatives changed leader, so even though it’s not a requirement because of the way the British system works it would be hypocritical of them not to give the electorate the choice…particularly given their manifesto pledges and likely changes to policy. Don’t forget, its country first not party now that the grown-ups are in charge 😂

Good, it needs changing.

I don't know about long tenure. The Boris era felt like forever.

He won a GE.

This entire chat is just pissing in the wind. There won’t be a general election until 2029.

Duvetdayforme · Yesterday 14:27

Absolutely not. We need economic and political stability.

YourAmplePlumPoster · Yesterday 14:34

I don't get the Starmer hate. Voters voted for him because he held a united Labour Party together in opposition and got them into power by voters tired of the merry go round of ever changing leaders. Now they want to do the same.

Nor me. Plus he's clearly not a show man or seeking the limelight. What a refreshing change.

paddleboardingmum · Yesterday 14:40

Nobody wants another election right now. I would be happy with Burnham taking over and I think lots would.

He comes across as a decent, principled man but, of course, the show ponies in politics have got a majority so they think they can piss about. Let's not forget when they change Ministers for the umpteenth time, public services suffer. My DH runs a GP Practice and now has yet another Health Minister.

Of course. Needless to say, the first response from KS about the AB victory was warm congratulations and acknowledgement of the achievement.
Love your "show ponies" phrase. Very apt.

You didn’t vote for a party you voted for a person. You may think you voted for a party but if, as you claim, you know how the system works, you know you are wrong.

Isn't Nigel Farage a cult ?

He's not a cult just a c**t of the highest order imo. Sooner he goes off to wherever with his 5 million the better
