To think if Keir Starmer is ousted there should be a general election

I think the set-up should be changed and if the PM is voted out by his party then there needs to be a general election. I didn't vote for very left wing policies which will happen if Andy Burnham replaces the PM. And neither would have I ever voted for the dreadful Liz Truss who must be the absolute worst PM we've ever had.

I don't think there should be a general election.

I disagree with the person who considered Liz Truss the worst PM ever. Perhaps someone who could be considered the second worst (Lord North and Anthony Eden possibly contenders). Boris Johnson easily the worst in the UK, indeed probably only Donald Trump and Victor Orban of democratically elected leaders in recent times have been worse.

Apparently Andy Burnham has given KS 72 hours to resign or he will launch a coup. It's no better than a 3rd world dictatorship. They are a disgrace.

Apparently is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Where did you glean this titbit and is there a link?

Grin

Apart from the fact there'll be an election in three years.

Starmer won't be fazed by that. He's made it clear he will only be dragged out kicking and screaming. Contrary to his statements, he doesn't put the country first, but neither will the showcasing Burnham.

YourAmplePlumPoster · Yesterday 17:31

I think there's quite a few MPs who don't want this showdown.

Weird how nobody has commented on this (or not)!

Rayner can't call for a GE when Sunak becomes PM and not also call for one when Burnham (or somebody else other than Starmer does) as that would be hypocritical, wouldn't it?

It seems she also has no clue how our democracy works and is daft, according to some posters on this thread. 🤷‍♀️ I wonder how many people rejecting the OP's idea called for a GE in the same way as Rayner last time?

That actually made me laugh out loud. Perhaps reading back on this thread will help you understand the political system we have.

BrownBookshelf · Yesterday 17:32

Not this again.

YABU because we have a parliamentary system without a directly elected leader. I have no problem with people advocating to change that, but not retrospectively. If we're going to have a system where we have a GE when the leader changes regardless of functioning parliamentary majority, people need to be able to vote on that basis.

Cheerychopsmum · Yesterday 17:34

Didn’t happen when BoJo and Truss resigned. Why should it be different for Labour just because you are unhappy.

Meadowfinch · Yesterday 17:37

You know as well as I do that it doesn't work like that, OP. The tories didn't hold a general election when Cameron swapped to May or May to Boris or Boris to Truss or Truss to Sunak.
Much as I think Starmer & Reeves are a disaster for the UK, the same rules apply to everyone.
And this way people will be so utterly sick of them by 2029 that Labour will be unelectable for a generation.

SpottyAlpaca · Yesterday 17:38

The clue is in the name, OP.

A Prime Minister is the most senior government minister but is not the head of state. They are not directly elected by the people but are appointed by the head of state. Lots of other countries also have prime ministers who are not the head of state, eg France, Italy, Ireland, Canada, Netherlands etc.

A President is the head of state and, in countries which have Presidents, is directly elected by the people. This is how it works in the USA, France etc.

ProudCat · Yesterday 17:38

I know perfectly well what the system is. I think it's wrong. I wouldnt have voted for a Labour party with Jeremy Corbyn in charge. And I probably wouldn't vote for it if Andy Burnham is PM. So why should I be stuck with him leading the country to the left.

Because that's how representative democracy works. If you don't like representative democracy, then you're free to relocate to an anti-democratic country.

I do wonder if Starmer is actually tempted to say "fuck it, I'll call a GE".

It's nothing like a third world dictatorship, that would be along the lines of misinformation funded by a foreign power to secure power for a rich elite. It would also involve the military. Far as I'm aware, Burnham has no intention to ask the armed services for support.

BeardySchnauzer · Yesterday 17:43

Well the Ukrainian rent boy stories fed into social media show Russia is very happy to meddle in our politics. They just want to cause disruption of course and don’t really care who is in power (sorry Nige!)

I find it incredibly depressing that Andy burnham is considered the saviour of the country. If he’s really the best we can do then we really are doomed.

This ⬆️. I have no idea why posters spread such utter nonsense.

It's amusing how the rise of "AI" correlates with a rise in the number of people who believe the UK somehow elects the Prime Minister.

It is, albeit OP predates that particular phenomenon. Not to say she couldn't have been influenced by it of course.

... and it clashes with the subset of people who despite knowing full well how things work, find it helps engagement if they pretend they don't.
