To think if Keir Starmer is ousted there should be a general election

I think the set-up should be changed and if the PM is voted out by his party then there needs to be a general election. I didn't vote for very left wing policies which will happen if Andy Burnham replaces the PM. And neither would have I ever voted for the dreadful Liz Truss who must be the absolute worst PM we've ever had.

In Sweden, their parliament chooses the PM. Why can't we have the same?

The best way to ensure something doesn't happen in Britain is to point to it working elsewhere. We invented "not invented here"

That’s how it works here. Labour have a majority so it’s effectively their choice

Greenleavesandsunshine · 22/06/2026 17:20

@GoneWithTHeWindJammers We used to do that in the UK, not parliament but just the MPs voted for their party leader so a very similar system. Both Labour and the Tories got rid of this to be more democratic and gave the final say (if it’s competitive) to party members.
I think just MPs or Parliament voting is actually a lot more sensible, it would have prevented Liz Truss!

Our parliament effectively does choose the PM, you never get a PM who can't command a majority.

If nobody else steps up the PLP will have effectively elected him.

Same with every mid-parliament transition for every party.

Could he resign as head of Labour, but carry on as prime minister, if he had the support of the King?

Er, no.

Andy Burnham will be PM without even the Labour Party having elected him. Its dire. How undemocratic.

Without us even seeing a full list of what he stands for. He's only just become an MP!

Greenleavesandsunshine · 22/06/2026 17:26

@GoneWithTHeWindJammers is actually correct. He could resign as head of the LP and be PM if enough MPs supported him. It won’t happen, but technically it could.

But who would support him if the PLP won't?
The monarch's first question is 'can you command a majority?'.

Actually it's the Monarchs only question.

Maddy70 · 22/06/2026 17:43

I think it would stop the chop and changing and in fighting tbh but the current system is what it is.

I'm sure they ask some others, just to make the journey worthwhile Grin

Who the actual F wants a general election? Seriously.

Andy Burnham isn’t very left wing. I live in Manchester and there’s nothing left wing about the way this place is run; capital is king.

What we do have is a public transport system that’s integrated and while not perfect, actually works.

I had a chuckle at the thought of Andy Burnham being left-wing, too. He may be a tiny bit pinker than Starmer, but no way is he left-wing.

The 1970s called and want their headlines back.

If you say so.

They need to have a proper contest where candidates set out their policies.

That's exactly what Labour would be shouting for. Boot's on the other foot now though.

And then Andy wins anyway.

I don’t really understand the point of a contest for the sake of having a contest.

So we can see what Burnham stands for surely.

BeardySchnauzer · 23/06/2026 09:24

I guess it would be good to know what his priorities are going to be but he’s going to win anyway

if everyone thinks it sounds a disaster I guess there will be a bigger clamour for a GE

I think his choice of chancellor will signal the way this is going to go and if it is EM then we are in for a rocky ride
