Burnham has won. More turmoil?

Now Burnham has won, it will trigger a leadership contest, and if he wins, a new chancellor of the exchequer.

Surely this cannot be good for the country, or its finances?

YABU - Burnham is a true leader who will improve the UK for everyone and be a competent and respected leader.

YANBU - FFS, here we go again.

I am quite fascinated though by how Burnham is morphing into Starmer. They have the same looks and mannerisms

Oh, God, not the nasal voice, please!

Can't say I'm enthusiastic about the Labour Party electing yet another white male leader.

How incredibly sexist and racist

BadBadCat · Yesterday 07:21

They should have chosen Burnham as leader when they had the chance years ago instead of Milliband!

ForGreenHiker · Yesterday 07:21

As much as I wish this wasn’t necessary- I’m pleased about the result.

At this point I see the threat of an extreme right wing government lead by Farage to be existential. This was the only route I can see they might prevent it.

It's because of things like Instagram, everyone wants instant wins. There were 14 years of Tory austerity and yet for some reason people thought Labour could magically fix everything in six months and then were shocked when that didn't happen.

I'm genuinely embarrassed to be British.

People talk about that period as though it was the Dark Ages. Such nonsense.

That government was actually just living within it's means which is something all governments should do.

Using the word "austerity" to cover this period is a complete misuse of language. More importantly it minimises the impact of the genuine austerity that people have faced at other times in history.

Twiglets1 · Yesterday 07:21

I can't actually see what Starmer has done that makes everyone dislike him so much. The country is in a dire state due to multiple factors from the past (never really recovered from the financial crisis of 2008 and the appalling Austerity politics, Brevity, covid) and global issues. Many other countries are facing the same problems as us in terms of expensive housing, poor wage inflation etc. There is no easy fix to it all.

If the Labour Party really wants Burnham to take over then I think the best way would be for Burnham to work alongside Starmer for a year or so and then have a managed handover.

I used to think this until recently. But the latest resignations on the question of defence has tipped the balance for me and I want him to go now too.

It does seem a dangerous time and he was being told by experts that we need to put more money into defence.

That isn’t sexism. Or racism.

It’s good as the right will realise their mistake and hopefully by the time of the next election there will be more cohesion and Labour will be gone. Although the layabouts with their cushy 9-5 public sector jobs and pensions or even cushier benefits will continue to vote for them regardless!! The rest of us need to really come together. I believe it should be about encouraging and incentivising work, you should subsidise those who need it, but not keep them ‘better off’ through no hard work and progression which is good for no one (apart from Labour itself of course, and also increasingly the Greens).

Banding together would not have helped you on this occasion, as Burnham would have won regardless.

If Burnham hadn't been able to win in that particular constituency, then Labour would have been in very real trouble indeed. However, I don't think we can necessarily assume that Burnham will have the same effect in the rest of the country.

The other bit that we don't really know is how much the vote was for Burnham and how much was against Reform.

Wishing14 · Yesterday 07:22

@TheOliveWriterthe one’s with cushy 9-5 office roles, many of whom aren’t needed! Obviously not the same!!

Settlersa · Yesterday 07:23

Some posters have mentioned Andy’s values, not sure what they are as they have changed many times over the years.

Vinvertebrate · Yesterday 07:23

EdithBond · Yesterday 07:11

Or perhaps all these 9-5 junior doctors and nurses who’ll save their life when they get rushed to A&E?

Good chance the junior doctors will be on their 9th strike over the insulting 30-odd % pay rise. Clap, clap.

LuckyHazelFox · Yesterday 07:25

Twiglets1 · Yesterday 07:18

I think if Reform are to have any chance of winning a GE they need to find better candidates than the one from Makerfield with horrible comments about women buried in his social media just waiting to be uncovered by the media. A lesson for Farage.

Women are 50% of the electorate, at least.

I wanted Burnham to win as he seemed the best of a bad bunch. But I don’t really think he can do a better job as prime minister than Starmer so it’s all a big waste of money really. Personally I would rather see Streeting in charge but Burnham seems more popular amongst those eligible to vote for PM.

I quite like Streeting and thought he did a reasonably good job as Health sec. He's also more to the right of Burnham but would bring a more centric approach that I think Labour need. Socialist Burnham isn't the answer. He's going to sink us further with giving trade unions what they want. It's going to be a period of more misery on middle income earners until Burnham is inevitably ousted. I want to see what he will do with the defence budget.

Absolutely agree, conservatives destroyed everything for their personal selfish gains. It’s ridiculous to expect that undone any time soon!

MagpiePi · Yesterday 07:26

Dragonscaledaisy · Yesterday 06:03

That expectation was set by Labour themselves. Unless you voted Labour in the last election, you have no need to be embarrassed. The current shambles is entirely of Starmer's own making and sums up his entire short premiership with the party lurching from one psychodrama to the next, creating ongoing instability.

From what I remember Labour were very much emphasising that it would take time to turn things around and anyone could see that the tories had left the country in a right state.

I’m not saying that Labour haven’t made some fuck ups and tried to push through unpopular policies, but any government has to change its plans as a reaction to external circumstances and influences.

Being snubbed by Trump is a good thing. Who'd want to be mates with him?!

Well I’ve always loved Burnham personally and wish him all the best, he’d be a fantastic PM.

And are there no 9-5 jobs in the private sector 🤔

HighHeelsRedLips · Yesterday 07:27

InterestedDad37 · Yesterday 07:02

That was purely and simply Trump's deranged and senile inability to use or recognise normal social cues. 🤷

Try watching the video. Starmer is not a leader, he’s a silly sausage. Time for him to go. He will go down in history as being one of the worst PMs ever!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · Yesterday 07:27

BadBadCat · Yesterday 07:18

Well who else have they got?

Quite. But it really is remarkable that almost every other political party in the UK, even the DUP FFS, has managed to elect a woman to lead them and the Labour Party, supposedly the main voice for equal rights, equal opportunity etc, never has. I should add I've never voted Tory in my life and probably never will. I've mostly voted Labour. In recent times it's because they were the least bad option. God knows what I'll do at the next GE.

Endgames · Yesterday 07:27

Hoping to see KS, RR and BP resign, it is labour’s
last chance, even given circumstances they’ve shown no ability to connect to people.

Selfish personal gains - you mean like running in a by election so you can become PM?

Noras · Yesterday 07:30

Th3 issue is that Starmer cheated the electorate because he promised a central government but did not deliver that. He promised welfare reform, investment and increased productivity.Instead his back benchers stopped welfare reform, gave more welfare in the for, of lifting the 2 child cap and he took away the winter fuel not in his manifesto. He also attacked the farmers and I think misled as he increased taxes on working people who get dividends etc. They failed to smash the gangs. All they did was introduce the easier policies to gov3 money away - not their money I might add but the employers / tax payers money.

Now Labour ironically thinks that a lurch further left is the right thing to do. It’s the complete opposite. They need to listen to the floating voters not the rigid Labour voters. They want stability, productivity increase and growth not the spend spend.

This is a disaster as they will lose the floating voters and it will be carnage. Their future policies will crash the economy as borrowing is already up.

Ugh - I feel really down about this and I actually don’t agree that it’s better than reform winning - I think it makes Reform more likely to win in the next election because on top of the people who think Starmer (in less than 2 years) should have been able to fix decades of issues that have built up under several governments and a very unstable global economy over which he has very little control, we’ll now get the ‘he wasn’t voted in by us so has no mandate’ voices too. I find it utterly depressing. No one from any party would have done any better - the problems that we have cannot be fixed in less than 2 years and no one has anymore idea than Starmer (well I certainly haven’t heard any other party put forward any workable suggestions anyway) as how to fix all of this given the causes. I blame Streeting, not Burnham though for triggering the start of it all. The country desperately needs some stability and those two idiots are about to take it away from us in a depressing leadership contest where what we need is sensible. Once that has happened, all those they that seem to think someone can magically fix all of this, will bay for an election for the next 3 years because yuh know, we didn’t vote for Burnham so he has no right to make decisions in my name blah nonsense. I had hoped the World Cup might bring the country together over the next few weeks but no, we’re going to have to suffer through this now.

It’s the flip flopping and cowering to back benchers.

he could have changed benefits reform and didnt
he shouldn’t have cancelled the Rwanda deal unless he had a solid plan to ‘smash the gangs’.

he shouldn’t have accepted freebies.
