Inconsequential but HIGHLY irritating things your DH does

I’m not talking ‘fails to do any housework’ or ‘won’t parent his own kids’ but minor irritations that make you want to scream but you can’t because its so petty. For me

Refuses to use the automatic windscreen wiper. Instead he waits until he has no visibility and then manually flips the wiper on once. In heavy rain he’s doing it every couple of seconds. Just put the bloody auto wipers on!!

Unloads the dishwasher but leaves select things stacked up ‘near’ the cupboard or drawer they live in rather than putting them away. Apparently they are left there to ‘thoroughly dry’.

Rage!!!

deciding after I’ve just scrubbed the bathroom it’s the perfect time to empty his bowels

LilytheThink · 16/06/2026 22:51

Empties the dishwasher without being asked, which is great, but slowly dries every item with a tea towel if there is a hint of water on it before he puts it away, so the job takes ages and he feels like he has completed a major task. I can do the same job in a fraction of the time because I move faster and reckon any moisture will dry off in the cupboard.😄

Slurps his coffee and makes that ahhh noise after every sip!

Oh noooo. I'd have to get up and leave. Poor you.

OkOkWhatsNext · 16/06/2026 22:52

Opens one side of the bedroom curtains in the morning. Just why?!

davidraker · 16/06/2026 22:52

Two things drive me mad.
He makes a cup of tea, stirs it and leaves the spoon on the work surface next to the sink.
Walks about 3 paces behind me me when we’re out. Feels like I’m dragging a sulky child around the shops!

SqueakyFromme · 16/06/2026 22:53

Most of these don’t sound petty at all, just exceptionally irritating

Almost puts the weekly shop away so freezer yes, fridge yes, but cupboard stuff near designated cupboard never in it, and god forbid anything for upstairs

This!
Never cycles things round. So the new stuff goes in on top and the older stuff is pushed to the back - aargghh!!!

Yes! Or have a bath in my lovely spotless bath before I get a chance despite him preferring showers. Oh yes, major irritation.

Sniffs. All the time.
Thinks he's a fantastic cook when he hardly ever cooks
Doesn't read books and, when we're having a conversation about books with friends, starts going on about one he read 10 years ago, and expects a medal.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

But but but...it's tops from the bottom and bottoms from the top! We actually had a minor fall out about this at the weekend. He claims he's always done it, I said he hadn't as he never hangs out the washing and it's wrong, he disputed this.....

Lasted all of 5 minutes, though, I re hung it.

I usually hang them on hangers as they dry more quickly and take up less space but occasionally he prefers pegging 😜

CuteOrangeElephant · 16/06/2026 22:56

Mine are laundry related.

DH goes to the gym a lot and then leaves the laundry in a plastic bag in front of the washing machine to wash the next day. Which to his credit, he does, but he insists on adding other laundry to it and by that time his gym gear stinks so much that it "infects" the other towels and even after washing I can detect a faint whiff of sweat. He of course can't smell it.

He also insisted on buying three huge boxes of cheap and nasty powdered detergent because "it was very cheap". Yes it was cheap because this particular detergent is useless and it stinks! I bought my usual stuff for me and the DC and he can use it for his clothes.

MIL and I made a quilt for one of the DC and he decided it needed to be washed at 60 degrees. I ratted him out to MIL and she told me to divorce him 😃. Luckily for him the quilt survived.

HalfandaHalf · 16/06/2026 22:57

Leaves shoes next to the shoe rack, not on it......

MagicalBagPuss · 16/06/2026 22:57

😂😂😂

CanIbeRio · 16/06/2026 22:58

Piles up dirty dishes in the sink which always have to be taken out of the sink to be able to put the plug in and fill the sink with water in order to actually wash said dirty dishes. Every. Single. Bloody. Time. he preps dinner

Never recycles - everything goes in the main kitchen bin. Every. Single. Bloody. Time. he preps dinner or tidies up

Puts his dirty trainers on top of my nice clean shoes Every. Single. Bloody. Time he takes them off

Sigh!!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/06/2026 22:58

Will make a snack like crackers and cheese but not put the knife in the dishwasher (always does the plate) or wipe any crumbs from the chopping board/side “in case he wants another one later”. We have thousands of knives, but tbh I would understand it more if he kept out the plate too.

Also very prone to doing half a job. Will put washing on (good) but forget to take it out of the machine (bad), do the ironing (good) then leave it without putting it away (bad), mop the floors (good) but leave the mop/bucket sat by the cupboard they live in (beyond bad).

He also rarely tidies as he goes when he cooks. Thankfully he is a good cook and an all round good lad.

PyongyangKipperbang · 16/06/2026 22:58

T shirts should always be pegged inside out by the arm pits. That way if the peg marks it at all, it wont show.

DogMumToADogGirl · 16/06/2026 22:59

Competitive illness… 😠
I mentioned a couple of days ago that I was feeling a bit under the weather, sore throat, headache. Before our conversation ended, he had also developed the exact same symptoms! This is despite saying earlier that he was in a real good mood and felt great!
I swear to God, if I was young enough for period pains, he’d have them as well! Drives me mad!

MagicalBagPuss · 16/06/2026 22:59

Leaving his washing on the floor instead of putting it in the laundry. There are other things but mostly because he's on the autistic spectrum. I am still learning, after 30 years, about how that expresses itself in him.

EmeraldDreams73 · 16/06/2026 23:01

There are many, but the loudly performative yawning both makes me jump every time and gives me the rage!

Bloozie · 16/06/2026 23:01

Oh god. So much.

I hate the way he clears his throat. Just fucking cough properly, or shut up. What is this 'uh-herm HUH-HUM' thing all about? Women don't do that, do we?

Does half of a helpful job. Unpacks Hello Fresh but leaves the box in the kitchen for days. Goes and does the bulk cat litter run but leaves the bags in the hallway by the front door for days. DO THE WHOLE JOB.

Speaks to the dogs in a high pitched feminine voice that gives me the biggest ick. It also gives my SON the ick. It's horrific.

Gets 8 hours a sleep every night - at least, more at the weekend - yet moans every morning that he's SO tired. Perimenopausal/really busy me gets 6 hours if I'm lucky, I've been to the gym, walked the dogs, emptied the dishwasher, cleared the cat litter tray, put a load of washing on, finished all the half jobs he's started and started work by the time he gets up and whinges about being tired.

CuteOrangeElephant · 16/06/2026 23:01

Further laundry complaints.

DH doses laundry detergent strictly based on vibes.

Apart from his smelly gym stuff things get perfectly clean so I can't even accuse him of doing anything wrong. It's just so irritating because I always read the instructions on the detergent and carefully measure based on our water hardness, laundry load and level of soiling and he just chucks some in.

My husband is brilliant but his over the top and incredibly dramatic sneezing fits make me want to kill him

Omg yes! Performative sneezing. Me and the dogs jump.a mile.
Pokemon Go. Every walk ruined by it and the accompanying "That's a fucking joke" He is really old enough to know better.

mumumental · 16/06/2026 23:02

Puts some things in the wrong drawer after the dishwasher. Likes to wear T shirts sometimes in a horrible shade of red. Why red, anyway?!

PickAChew · 16/06/2026 23:03

SeaToSki · 16/06/2026 22:26

Puts the recycling on the counter top above the bin. All he has to do is open the drawer and drop it in, he's done 90% of the work taking it over there..why not just finish the job? Arrrrg

We actually do that one but that's because DS2 with severe learning difficulties and ASC has recycling and rubbish as one of his obsessions and needs some busy work when he gets a bit hyper 😂

DH is guilty of so many of the above but can be summed up by doing 90% of a given job. I have some minor but often painful mobility issues and he has a fairly sedentary job so I've pushed most of the more physical housework jobs in his direction. He changes bedding and always leaves a corner of the fitted sheet not tucked under. He vacuums the middle of the room and has to be reminded to do the edges. He painted the hall a couple of years ago but not the front door frame. And the woodwork he did paint is a mix of satin and matt because he decided that one coat over the primer was enough.

deciding after I’ve just scrubbed the bathroom it’s the perfect time to empty his bowels

I deep clean the bathroom every Friday morning, then he's right in there after me for a shit and to fuck up my immaculate shower screen.
