George’s education costs

Honest23 · 16/06/2026 17:53

Who here would honestly happily contribute to George’s education costs?

Reported to be £68000 a year at Eton.

Are you as snotty as this over all 12 year old children or are you just saving your vitriol for George?

Charlize43 · 16/06/2026 18:38

I'm sorry but I can't afford it. Those crooks at Thames Water hiked my bill up by £200 and basically I'm struggling to afford anything. I'm petrified by all this talk that the Iran war is going to send electricity & gas prices through the roof this winter. It was bad enough last year, coming home and having to go straight to bed in order to keep warm. I hate to think what retirement is going to be like as I am only a few years away.

JustSawJohnny · 16/06/2026 18:40

Not a single penny.

Especially as Dad is now the Duchy of Cornwall and will be making a hundred odd mill a year off proceeds from land taken by a former king without a single penny paid for it.

Thedogscollar · 16/06/2026 18:41

He's the future King. He's hardly going to go to the local comp, so your AIBU is pointless.

palana · 16/06/2026 18:43

I don't want to hear any excuses, reasons, backup financial info about our 1p per person contribution, or how great they are at representing us and how many tourists they attract.

I WANT A PROPER "GET EM" THREAD. Now.

BoredZelda · 16/06/2026 18:45

PercyPigsAreOverRated · 16/06/2026 17:57

I haven't been asked to contribute.

I assume you mean are we happy with our taxes going towards this?

As it works out as £0.0017 per tax payer I'm not overly fussed.

In fact our taxes don’t. The Crown Estate contributed £1.1b to the exchequer in 2024, Sovereign Grant was £86m. Even the years where there isn’t such a large amount going in, Sovereign Grant is around 12-15% of what the crown estate contributes.

I'm sure someone will be along soon 😔

Im aware our taxes don't. But assume that's what op was getting at. I should have clarified that!

ShutupLwren · 16/06/2026 18:53

I say this as someone who is anti monarchy personally, but I have no issue with them as they bring people so much joy and just because I don’t get it, I understand that other people won’t find joy in what I do.
But as someone who doesn’t want a royal family, I couldn’t give a single fuck how much it costs to educate him. The poor wee lad has no say in so much of his life and probably won’t, let him at least have the opportunity of a terrific education.

Monty36 · 16/06/2026 18:53

The taxpayer does not pay for his education. It is paid for by his parents private means.

Anothernameretired · 16/06/2026 18:54

Maybe he got a scholarship?

ACynicalDad · 16/06/2026 18:56

Could have made a statement sending him to Slough Comp but the poor kid will be the property of the nation for his life. At least let him have a childhood amongst kids who share his privilege to some degree and where he won’t be seen as hugely special and can just have a few years of fun before a lifetime of Royal service begins

Topseyt123 · 16/06/2026 18:56

I'm glad he's going to Eton and not the god awful Gordonstoun, which his grandfather described as "Colditz in kilts."

Eton is near to his home so I imagine he will still see his family regularly. In fact, did I read that he will flexi-board? So not boarding all the time?

palana · 16/06/2026 18:57

Eton Mess.

Prombles · 16/06/2026 18:59

Had to laugh at this on BBC News website:

Among the suggestions under discussion, which seemed to focus on private rather than state schools, was Marlborough College, the school his mother Catherine had attended.

Wot, you mean he's not going to Slough Comp?😆

bridgetreilly · 16/06/2026 18:59

I’m mostly just glad they didn’t pick Marlborough after all.

PyongyangKipperbang · 16/06/2026 19:01

I am as anti monarchy as they come, and I have no problem as I am not contributing. Neither are you, unless you pay your rent to the Duchy of Cornwall!

Backedoffhackedoff · 16/06/2026 19:03

Would I fuck.

would be nice if they just went to their local school.

HumerousHumous · 16/06/2026 19:04

UnPetitDunPetit · 16/06/2026 18:04

I imagine there will be security costs, which will be

And can you imagine how much higher those security costs would be if George was being dropped off and collected from a state school every day rather than living full time on school grounds during term time?!

Yes, I think pretty high. It seems to be tradition for royals to board at this stage of their education so I imagine planning for security is easier. I wonder how many security personnel he will need? Not judging or disagreeing but I imagine his security bill will be huge.

PyongyangKipperbang · 16/06/2026 19:04

Why? Just curious, I know nothing about Marlborough!

RudePhthaloDalmadoodle · 16/06/2026 19:05

I would! Who could say no to that face?

George’s education costs
shuggles · 16/06/2026 19:06

@Honest23 Sounds like a mumsnet salary would be needed to afford those costs.

Backedoffhackedoff · 16/06/2026 19:06

NotAnotherScarf · 16/06/2026 17:59

I think that you, and many people forget is that technically the king, his grandfather actually owns the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. We own the land we farm or have houses on at his discretion. Legally, I believe, it's the case that he could take the land away from you. That's the benefit of being related to and inheritance of William the conqueror.
They royal family own vast estates and lots of houses...they have chosen to take an allowance and the majority of the money goes to the state.

Therefore a piddling little sum for eton against the income of just the duchy of Cornwall for example, is just a drop in the ocean.

“Legally, I believe, it's the case that he could take the land away from you”

how? (Legally)

He can't. The Government can (in his name as it is HRH's government) in certain circumstances but it has to be overseen by law. CPO's for example.

He cant just say "Oh I fancy that field, I am having it" Its just one of those old laws that has never been repealed but has been over written by new laws, like the ones about moving sheep and geese through central London!
