DH and I disagree about Soap 😳

DH has put a fresh bar of soap out today, his trusty Imperial Leather. He thinks it’s a classy soap based on his childhood perspective in the late 1970s. I think it’s one step up from carbolic. I want Jo Malone soap 😢

AIBU - imperial leather is pure luxury
AINBU - what next, waxy toilet paper?

The green Pears has had so much love on this thread I have to try it now.

Oh…There are two green ones….Is it the Lemon Flower one or the ‘Pears Naturale’ with aloe that people are loving?

I just remembered Cidal soap, used it as a teen!

user1476613140 · 13/06/2026 22:02

Just bought bar shampoo at Boots . The Garnier one. Yet to try it out. Love the fact it's all packaged with no plastic.

I have some in my bathroom right now.

macshoto · 13/06/2026 22:14

Imperial Leather is nothing like it used to be. Much softer (more water content / less fat?), lasts less long than it used to. For that reason alone I dumped it in favour of the Waitrose basics soap (cannot remember precise name).

That said, I like a luxury / artisanal soap when someone else is buying!

Why Ugh? It's better than shower gel!

Haven’t got to the end of the thread so it might been mentioned already but I think the people who think it’s “ugh” and gross/grim/manky etc are maybe like one of my friends, the type of people who take the bar of soap and place it directly into their fanny/arse crack to clean themselves and just assume that everybody else uses bar soap this way. So they think the whole family is using soap that’s been in each others arsecracks 😂😂

I thought people just lathered the soap on their flannel/loofah/sponge rather than place the bar directly into arse crack until my friend told me how she thought it was supposed to be used.

SabbatWheel · 13/06/2026 22:30

LOVE bar soap in the bath! IL is such a classic, clean smell.

Currently on The English Soap Company Fig and Grape, nearly finished the bar and it still smells as strong as at the start. Great lather on it too.

I was given it as a prezzie and I’ve already got a range of their soaps in my basket for when it’s finished!

Don’t use it in the shower though as bar soap creates a film on the glass.

BaronessBomburst · 13/06/2026 22:32

I love Heno de Pravia. It's a Spanish soap with a distinctive clean smell. And Myrurgia Maya, which is richly floral.

oliviaAustin · 13/06/2026 22:34

It’s neither luxury nor crap. It’s just a solid everyday soap. Jo Malone is overpriced as it’s just soap.

WerewolfOfLoudon · 13/06/2026 22:39

gamerchick · 13/06/2026 12:31

Why can't you have both?

Husband loves IL but we won't buy it as the cat goes mad licking the bath after his shower. Doesn't happen with any other soap.

🤣 Mine just lick plastic! It's Turmeric soap or Dove in my bathroom though so glad they aren't bath lickers.

@UhOhRatPoo Camay reminds me of my great grandmother ❤

@anotherdaytosmile Both of you should have your own soap and own loofah/body puff/silicone scrubber.

Oh the banana one is good. Use it for travelling and it lasts ages.

Takes me a month to get through one of their bars. It's beautiful stuff. Expensive though. I do buy TK Maxx soap too which was previously recommended on here.

The Wild Raspberry one is divine. Bought in 3 packs so they live in my drawers before use @Sunnyyetnotsunny

Soap is just a way of stripping the skin of its natural oils and microbiome.

The rest is pretty much all just fluff and marketing BS.

How much???

Strangerthanfictions · 13/06/2026 23:15

TheyGrewUp · 13/06/2026 12:41

I don't mind Imperial Leather; or Palmolive. I miss the days when the shelves were sruffed with different soaps: Lux, Camay, Shield and a plethora of supermarket own in colours to match the bathroom!

Treat soap here is good French soap, Marseille or L'Occitane. I don't get the love for Jo Malone.

Whatever the soap, I still like unwrapping a brand new bar.

Agree with you both having your favourote soap.

Oh my God Sheild. Everyone smelled of people's dads

Well, also for killing nasty bacteria**, removing unpleasant smells, and removing grease and dirt.
I make my own soap with lye and olive oil because I'm old school.

**Yes, It does actually kill them.

You're both unreasonable. Who uses bars of soap in the 21st century!?! Makes me feel a bit nauseous. 🤢

Anyone who wants to get properly clean?

NotMeAtAll · 13/06/2026 23:44

I love Imperial Leather. I hadn't come across it in decades until I tried it again recently. It's like drinking Martini (the brand) or anything else that was pushed as a luxury product in the '70s -although Imperial Leather doesn't have the same smell that I remember. I don't think Jo Malone makes anything particularly special in the scent department.

Persephonia1966 · 13/06/2026 23:46

MrsShawnHatosy · 13/06/2026 23:28

So what do you do after going to the toilet or handling raw chicken or getting car oil on your hands or cleaning up after a sick child?

The thing about the skins natural oils is they are secreted by cells in the hands and when the oil is removed the body just makes more. It's not like some ecological catastrophe every time you wash your hands.
