DH and I disagree about Soap 😳

anotherdaytosmile · 13/06/2026 12:27

DH has put a fresh bar of soap out today, his trusty Imperial Leather. He thinks it’s a classy soap based on his childhood perspective in the late 1970s. I think it’s one step up from carbolic. I want Jo Malone soap 😢

AIBU - imperial leather is pure luxury
AINBU - what next, waxy toilet paper?

I love expensive scented soaps that cost a fortune but I tried Tesco basic unscented this week (39p) and its very nice. I also like Dettol soap for my underarms after reading about it on here.

When DH is away I use my stash of Chanel CoCo soap and perfume, he really hates the smell of sandalwood.

We didn’t have much money growing up. My best pal always had Imperial Leather - I remember asking my DM to get some and she said it was too dear. I started buying it as an adult as soon as I had my own house as it was luxury to me 🥰

Water softener! No scum, no limescale, no Viakal. We've had ours 30 years and it moved house with us.

Now THAT'S what I'd call a long-lasting soap!

gamerchick · 13/06/2026 12:31

Why can't you have both?

Husband loves IL but we won't buy it as the cat goes mad licking the bath after his shower. Doesn't happen with any other soap.

Best thing I’ve read today. Thank you making me smile!

£200 per kilo. Grin

For that price, I’d want it to apply itself, rinse me off, towel me dry, and fix me a stonking great gin and tonic afterwards.

🤣🤣🤣

itsgettingweird · 13/06/2026 19:55

You’re both wrong.

I use dettol soap!!!!

Gatekeeper · 13/06/2026 20:05

I remember an advert for Imperial Leather in the '80s. High falutin' parents and childer were in a bath aboard their private jet and asked the pilot to divert so the soap would float down to the father's end of the bath. Or summat like that Grin

They strapped the soap in as the plane changed course?

I hate the smell of soaps. So team handwash for me.

Me too. I don't buy soap just antibacterial hand wash.

I've just googled the ad and misremembered most of the advert!. Ah well...at least I remembered the soap and the plane...

That's the only bit I remember.

I've got an image of the woman who played the mum but can't think of her name.

Any ideas?

I think there may be a perfectly overlapping Venn diagram of MN users who think soap is distasteful and MN users who freak out about who is allowed to do what in which loo.

Shower gel, in addition to all the other flaws people have listed, takes an insane amount of time and water to rinse off. Soap rinses off quickly, taking all the dirt with it.

My current favourite is a German brand called Speick, which is a peculiar orange colour but smells so good!

LittleGreenDragons · 13/06/2026 21:22

Still reading the thread but Shield is great. You feel clean, and the soap smells clean and fresh.

I had forgotten about Camay (my mum's favourite soap when I was a child), do they still sell it in supermarkets/pound shops??

I've tried bar shampoo. It's ok but I haven't found a bar conditioner that doesn't leave my hair like straw.

Have you tried the Friendly Soap Company's?

My DH uses Shield (the 80s green marbled soap) i use Jo Malone. We have unscented hand soap on the wash basin, currently lovely French soap I brought back from skiing.

I like Pears. It turns you into a beautiful princess.

I love the green Pears, it scents the whole bathroom, so aromatic but clean smelling.

diddl · 13/06/2026 21:30

This one.

Bar soap? That everyone uses? Ugh

Just how dirty are the people who come to your house, if you are concerned that them using your soap, which is an actual CLEANING agent, is unhygienic?
