DH and I disagree about Soap 😳

DH has put a fresh bar of soap out today, his trusty Imperial Leather. He thinks it’s a classy soap based on his childhood perspective in the late 1970s. I think it’s one step up from carbolic. I want Jo Malone soap 😢

AIBU - imperial leather is pure luxury
AINBU - what next, waxy toilet paper?

The only soap that doesn’t shred by hands to bits it’s Dove. If I could I’d use imperial leather too, it’s got the proper ‘clean soap’ smell.

outdooryone · 13/06/2026 17:15

Soap user here - I just don't like contributing all that plastic unnecessarily. Plus, I feel I can clean more with soap.
I'm not an Imperial Leather user - Aran Aromatics or Highland Soap company when I can, or whatever smells nice in TK Maxx soap area!

Trumptontown · 13/06/2026 17:15

Now I know why so many people these days stink - because they’re soap dodgers who think shower gel is just as effective (it really isn’t).

Team DH here.

I'm just intrigued. No food is safe around my cat. I'm just wondering what his reponse to IL would be 😂

Our malecat is all over DD when she uses Byoma lotion on her legs , licks her ankles Shock

It rubs the lotion on it's skin like Silence of the Lambs voice

MaleCat is an utter little weirdo though !

You're both unreasonable. Who uses bars of soap in the 21st century!?! Makes me feel a bit nauseous. 🤢

much better for your skin. And everyone’s filthy hands touch the liquid soap pump. Bar soap is self cleaning

DJKATIE · 13/06/2026 17:16

We just have a bar each. Sorted

5foot5 · 13/06/2026 17:16

Another Pears fan here. I just love the smell.

But Imperial Leather is also fine.

I thought Jo Malone made candles, but if she has branched out in to soap I assume it will be as overpriced as the candles.

Germ carrying either way. Always use liquid soap, far healthier.

The opposite is true

Sunnyyetnotsunny · 13/06/2026 17:20

I still fondly remember bars of soap in drawers and wardrobes ❤️

This

Ive never used the same products as my DH
I think Op thinks somehow its awfully funny to mock argue over thistrying to aim for classics but if my DH said I had to use his soap I would tell him to stop being silly and crack out a new bar of something nice.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/06/2026 17:25

I have a bar of the Rituals Hair&Body soap from a birthday gift box , I need to get a dish to fit it and remember to keep it safe in the bathroom. I don;t think anyone else would poach it but if its in the shower caddy it'll dissolve .

I use Faith in Nature showergel for daily use ( and nicer ones at weekends and holidays ) , I bought a bar of the solid shower soap but it dissolved really quickly . Proper soap lasts longer .
Theres a Waitrose Camomile which is mild smelling and great value .

We do. Both bar soap and bar shampoo. It's far more environmentally friendly, is much cheaper and works just as well. Next question?

Just me and him in the bath. Are we mingers?

Of course not! But this is Mumsnet where everyone must have their own everything, which cannot be touched by anyone else, ever!

I love TK Maxx soap section! I got a gorgeous Italian soap from there, beautiful fragrance, creamy lather, could not find any more in the shop so looked it up: it was really expensive stuff online, but was about £2.99 in TK Maxx. I do pop in now and then to see if it turns up again and if it does I will shamelessly buy the lot.

Of course not, any number of people can use the same bar of soap and it is perfectly sanitary. The soap cleans and kills germs, nothing nasty can grow on it.

saraclara · 13/06/2026 17:41

Imperial Leather is the smell of my childhood.

You've made me want to go and buy some.

I like a bar soap in my en suite, no one else uses it. Plastic container free; mine is wrapped in recyclable paper and lasts far longer than a hand soap dispenser too.
Neither of you are unreasonable, you like what you like and he likes what he likes. JM soap is fab for all those naysayers, really foamy and luxurious and you need the tiniest teeniest bit on a squidgy thing. Definitely double soap dish!

Missymarple · 13/06/2026 17:42

DH and I tend to be Dove soap bar users, for hand washing and in a lovely hessian bag thing in the shower. But I'm very fortunate in having a great friend who actually makes soap so every so often she gives us a bag full of handmade soap, which lasts us forever.

Skybluepinky · 13/06/2026 17:42

One soap each, no idea why you want to argue about it.

I think it's more preferences or options for moods. We have different types for different mood and in my case, time of day.
Same with lotions.
That said, DH was not allowed to touch my my soap when zi was running low and I only get it from abroad😂 that was very much....

SockPlant · 13/06/2026 17:56

lottiegarbanzo · 13/06/2026 13:24

Imperial Leather is 70s/80s nostalgia soap. I didn’t know you could still get it. It always went dry and cracked near the end, in an unpleasant way.

you are using your soap wrong (or not often enough) if that happens to it.

I use soap, i love IL and have a lovely cardomom one from TK Max. Haven't used shower gel for years and years. I do occasionally use Rituals shower mousse because my DD buys me one every christmas that i eke out over the year.

thisoldcity · 13/06/2026 17:57

I'm old enough to remember those IL adverts where they were all in the bath on a plane. So posh! Now I've said that, I'm doubting myself because that sounds so weird. Anyone else remember it?

I love the smell of IL because my dad always smelled of it, never used anything else.

Oh dear, your post demonstrates a complete lack of understanding as to how soap works.

Yeah whats the likelihood that men rub it on their arse crack and bits of pubes get stuck in it
No thanks
