DH and I disagree about Soap 😳

anotherdaytosmile · 13/06/2026 12:27

DH has put a fresh bar of soap out today, his trusty Imperial Leather. He thinks it’s a classy soap based on his childhood perspective in the late 1970s. I think it’s one step up from carbolic. I want Jo Malone soap 😢

AIBU - imperial leather is pure luxury
AINBU - what next, waxy toilet paper?

We clearly live in pure luxury all have our own soap dish…! It’s the way to go. No more disputes over which soap to buy…! I agree with you on the imperial leather. If you want fancy soaps, pick one out from TX maxx!
Soap is so much better for one of my children’s exzema and liquid soap doesn’t really clean you properly and just leaves you feeling a bit gross. Can’t beat soap and a flannel!!! Especially in summer when you’re so sweaty etc…

Ponderingwindow · 13/06/2026 16:07

Both are leaving harmful residues on your hands. Get a minimalist soap that just does the job of cleaning.

I love soaps from Future Primitive, they smell amazing.

Failing that, Nesti Dante or some other Italian soap from TK Maxx.

Ooh, those look lovely, I'm definitely going to be ordering some, thank you.

gamerchick · 13/06/2026 12:31

Why can't you have both?

Husband loves IL but we won't buy it as the cat goes mad licking the bath after his shower. Doesn't happen with any other soap.

Mine too! OP, it seems getting a cat might be the answer to getting it banned from the house.

I grew up in the 70’s with Imperial leather. Always hated how the little badge would stay there stuck in the soap getting mankier and mankier until the bitter end so yanbu.

I love a ‘perfumed’ soap and like to collect (and use) all different rose scented ones.

MonsterasEverywhere · 13/06/2026 16:13

My partner and I each have a bar of soap. Works much better.

I suspect you have to do all the interior design as he'd be happy with a single leather seat and a massive tv!

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 13/06/2026 16:14

We're a Pears household but IL is in the same sort of genre I think - a classic.

Bars in the bathrooms but I bought a bottle of the hand-wash for the downstairs loo.

DH was a shower gel man but now the hot weather has arrived he prefers the squeaky clean sensation of a bar of soap. Converted!

MrsShawnHatosy · 13/06/2026 15:18

Hmmm. You should really only use stuff on the dog that’s specially formulated for them. Would you wash yourself with dog shampoo?

I would and do wash my hair with our cat shampoo (Nootie Sweet Pea) as its gorgeous and I had to buy a literal gallon of it, but I believe you should never use human toiletries on pets.

The cat licks the bath after IL used??

WhereYouLeftIt · 13/06/2026 16:26

We use a glycerine soap to wash at the sink (zero packaging), and a local shop stocks The English Soap Company's Kew Gardens Collection which we use in the shower (paper wrap). That started as a treat at Christmas a few years back, but then I just decided (think L'Oreal adverts) I was worth it!

I only use liquid soap in kitchen and toilet.
While I agree it's not the soap of luxury and I prefer Pears, it has one benefit. The little sticky label means you can balance it on the side of the bath and it doesn't slip off or go soggy.

Is this why it has the label????

Useyourfork · 13/06/2026 16:34

I’ve rediscovered bar soap recently after purchasing some magnetic holders to stick the soap to the wall so no gammy residue!
I went to buy some Pears and found out that they now do different fragrances! My bathroom has never smelt better.
Still have hand soap in the guest bathroom but I’m a happy bar soap convert😊

tichbrew · 13/06/2026 16:34

I don't like Imperial leather it was what my parents always bought though. I prefer Dove or a nice handmade soap. I've never tried Jo Malone soap so I couldn't say about that.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 13/06/2026 16:36

MabelAnderson · 13/06/2026 15:56

I have a few bars of pre reformulation Pears stacked away just to sniff.
My favourite childhood one was Knight’s Castile, anyone remember that ? It smelt wonderful.

I read this as 'pre-reformation Pears' and I thought, blimey that's a long time to have had soap hidden away...

rainbowunicorn · 13/06/2026 16:38

DidYeAye16 · 13/06/2026 14:11

If anyone used the same soap as me id be disgusted. I've got a tropics one and everyone else uses shower gel. Why don't you just get what you want and use different soap.

Do you not understand how soap works or something? Why would you be disgusted at someone else using the same soap? How strange.

TheBot · 13/06/2026 16:39

steff13 · 13/06/2026 15:52

So do y'all use the same shampoo and conditioner and everything? We've always had our own preferred toiletries, I thought that was common. It's what my family did growing up, too.

Yes. We used bar shampoo but I just buy supermarket conditioner. The shower would be a bit cluttered if everyone had their own.

user4903456342 · 13/06/2026 16:40

Pears is the childhood memory soap for me, but it smells different now and dries out my skin.

I bought Japanese persimmon soap when we were going on a hiking holiday in a very hot country and have used it ever since. The brand I bought is lovely and creamy but still leaves me feeling super clean (we both use it).

And Acqua di Parma hand wash in glass bottles. Amazing scents and they use glycerine in place of a lot of the ickier ingredients.

I don't understand why anyone would be 'disgusted' at using the same soap bar, even though it is far less disgusting than handling a liquid soap dispenser straight after people who have touched it right after being on the loo.

I'm just intrigued. No food is safe around my cat. I'm just wondering what his reponse to IL would be 😂

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 13/06/2026 16:55

Germ carrying either way. Always use liquid soap, far healthier.

Look its soap, it does the job it's supposed to do. Not sure I'd want to spend on Jo Malone just to rinse it down the sink.

I know right! Imperial Leather all the way…

I prefer liquid handwash, Bio s unfragranced easy to use and buy in 5 litres, lasts ages, just cat and I

We buy this for in the kitchen and for DS2, who has learning difficulties and can't manage to "work" a bar of soap. We have that alongside actual soap by the bathroom sinks.
