AIBU to be annoyed by DH laughing in bed every night?

Almost every night when we’re in bed and dropping off to sleep - DH will suddenly burst out laughing. He’ll rarely tell me what he’s laughing at so now I just tell him to pack it in and go to sleep … this usually results in about 20 minutes of the bed shaking while he’s stifling laughter. Sometimes he’s absolutely creased up.

Last night he did it just as I was nodding off abs it scared the shit out of me so I shouted at him to pack it in. This morning morning I told him it’s getting seriously fucking annoying and he either tells me what he’s laughing at or he sleeps in the spare room. He says he’s at work stressed all day so when he gets in bed and starts to unwind random thoughts pop into his head and makes him laugh. He reckons he genuinely tries not to laugh but the more he tries the worse it gets.

Is this bullshit or what?? Does his explanation make any sense to anyone here? Thing is it’s not a fake laugh, he’s genuinely creased up

Very strange behaviour.

sillyrubberduck · 11/06/2026 22:05

I do this when very stressed or very tired.

MyDandyUmberDuck · 11/06/2026 22:06

He sounds like a lunatic. He’s not watching anything humerous he just makes himself laugh hysterically for 20mins at a time? I’d be booking a brain scan.

It's the OP doing it, not her husband.

Ah forgot I’d posted about this before! Ok I reversed - it’s me doing it and I don’t know what to do - it’s getting worse and nobody is taking me seriously, I tried speaking to the Gp but basically told me to make sure I was more tired before going to bed. It’s driving me mad. I had a laughing fit earlier and I literally couldn’t stop and it was such a stupid thing I was laughing at I couldn’t even tell DH as I knew he wouldn’t find it funny at all. Nobody I know has ever experienced it but it really is getting worse - especially since I stopped work

Okay well this is different. It sounds like a stress reaction maybe? I’d look at therapy.

Yep rather more useful information in the last post!

Why, when you thought it was her husband, he needed a brain scan, but now you know it's her, she needs therapy? Why not a brain scan?

The follow up posts suggested it was a long term issue that could be linked to stress though personally I’d do both 🤷‍♀️

this article is written for GPs, has your GP ever done a questionnaire with you about it as mentioned in the article? https://www.pulsetoday.co.uk/clinical-feature/clinical-areas/mental-health-pain-and-addiction/no-laughing-matter-recognising-pseudobulbar-affect/

sparrowhawkhere · 11/06/2026 22:22

Am I the only one who started laughing reading the op?! I do things like this though, not at bedtime but laugh quite a lot! I also nervous laugh a lot then I laugh at myself not laughing. I also laugh remembering a time I laughed, I laugh at something funny but then laugh more when people aren’t laughing…I try not to be annoying but I know all that laughing can be! I’m not like the jolly policeman though, I do get grumpy sometimes.

When Dd was a toddler, as she got tired she would start to giggle hysterically, at the same time she would cry because she couldn't stop giggling, this only happened when she was really tired, she grew out of it but I'm wondering if it's a recognised 'thing' 🤔

Yes children - and adults - can get tired and giggly, but I don't think to the extent the op is talking about.

Also surely if you were genuinely concerned about yourself doing it, the concern would take over and make you find it all less hilarious.

I think it sounds like something you need help with op.

Reverses should be banned. And yes, you should definitely sleep in the spare room. This would drive me mad if I were trying to sleep.

LemonadeisbetterCloudy · 11/06/2026 22:50

Op, mine does it too, he knows to stay downstairs now until he is ready to come to bed and be quiet! I'm jealous that he laughs so easily at tv/memes etc. I have a dry humour so it takes a bit more! He also has huge over reactions to things he reads; sometimes I think we must have won the flipping lottery!

LemonadeisbetterCloudy · 11/06/2026 22:51

Oh, just seen it is reverse! Yes yabu op, stay downstairs until you can behave! 😂

You need to ask for a second opinion or go private.

worldsgonemadnow · 11/06/2026 22:58

@Greyblankiethis could possibly be gelastic seizures. I'd advise going back to your GP and refusing to leave until they refer you to the epilepsy team or at the very least for an eeg

I like a good reverse. I am sure from time to time an op gets a far more honest response than would otherwise be the case.

Jk987 · 11/06/2026 23:06

He should defo share the joke so you can laugh together. Being angry at someone laughing is a bit much though. Life can be hard enough, why would you want to stop him?

Catpuss66 · 11/06/2026 23:27

I used to get just dropping off to sleep woken by massive bangs, drop back off again same thing happened then found a thing called exploding head syndrome. Not had it since I retired I also have a downstairs camera. See different GP get him to refer you sleep clinic best get it seen.

Ugh, I hate reverses. SO annoying and confusing.
What's even the point?!

It's the OP doing it, not the DH. Some weird reverse thread for some reason 😕

Yes, these are kids! No adults find life funny enough to giggle all night about it. That ends in the late teens.

NameChangeMay2026 · 11/06/2026 23:46

Greyblankie · 11/06/2026 19:47

If he’d only just started doing it I’d be concerned but he’s done it for years. Normally I just hear him laughing quietly but last night he full on burst out laughing loudly and it really did shit me up as I was half asleep

Edit: Ignore what I wrote. Just read OP's update that it's her and she feels that she really can't help it. OP, wonder if it's a neurological issue. Maybe ask your GP to refer you to a neurologist?
