AIBU to be annoyed by DH laughing in bed every night?

Almost every night when we’re in bed and dropping off to sleep - DH will suddenly burst out laughing. He’ll rarely tell me what he’s laughing at so now I just tell him to pack it in and go to sleep … this usually results in about 20 minutes of the bed shaking while he’s stifling laughter. Sometimes he’s absolutely creased up.

Last night he did it just as I was nodding off abs it scared the shit out of me so I shouted at him to pack it in. This morning morning I told him it’s getting seriously fucking annoying and he either tells me what he’s laughing at or he sleeps in the spare room. He says he’s at work stressed all day so when he gets in bed and starts to unwind random thoughts pop into his head and makes him laugh. He reckons he genuinely tries not to laugh but the more he tries the worse it gets.

Is this bullshit or what?? Does his explanation make any sense to anyone here? Thing is it’s not a fake laugh, he’s genuinely creased up

Apologies for typos, my phone keeps freezing

Get him banished to the spare room, see how funny he finds that.

How strange i think i would be concerned he was having some kind of seizure or his mental health is impacted some kind of hysteria.

KitchenReno · 11/06/2026 19:45

So he isn't watching something on his phone? He regularly bursts into fits of laugher as you fall asleep because of 'funny thoughts'?

What is he like in general? I find that rather strange.
Almost like he is doing it to disturb you (in more ways than one!)

This was my thought too. I’d find that very strange behaviour

TomatoSandwiches · 11/06/2026 19:46

He sounds seriously stressed, inappropriate laughing is sometimes a sign of poor MH, I've experienced this myself.

PiggieWig · 11/06/2026 19:46

Is he laughing at stuff on his phone or just in his head? Tell him to have a proper wind down before bed and get his giggles out of the way.
Rude he won’t tell you what’s funny when it’s keeping you awake!

Pickledonions12 · 11/06/2026 19:46

Unless he's watching videos or reading something, that is really odd.

If he’d only just started doing it I’d be concerned but he’s done it for years. Normally I just hear him laughing quietly but last night he full on burst out laughing loudly and it really did shit me up as I was half asleep

I had something similar to this when I was really stressed, it was annoying, but basically as I’d be trying to fall asleep I’d essentially get a nervous laugh and then couldnt stop. It’s not fair if he’s waking you up though and the spare room is a good shout.

TheBlueKoala · 11/06/2026 19:49

Sounds creepy as fuck but it's probably stress related. Make him see a therapist to talk about it.

Larrythecatforpm · 11/06/2026 19:50

Sounds really creepy. He’s probably really stressed and needs a therapist.

Ok maybe that was a slight exaggeration - he goes through stages of it so he won’t do it for months but then it starts up again and it’s almost every night until suddenly it stops again for months

He’s not on his phone

My dad used to do this! He had one laughing fit that went on for hours and we were all fucking terrified.

He did have pretty severe mental illness.

Hes done it for years? So he doesn't have a health issue. He's simply chronically selfish and very rude

That’s weird. Is he watching stuff on his phone ?
just take yourself off to the spare room and get some peace.

How weird Hmm

WhispersFromFairyland · 11/06/2026 19:53

I would see this as a physical response to being hugely stressed. Being in bed is probably the first time in the day he is relaxed so his body is responding. I would imagine it’s an involuntary physical action, a bit like a tic, that he cannot control. And you say it’s been happening for a while so his brain has formed a pattern. Perhaps some counselling or CBT would help?

Boomtiara · 11/06/2026 19:57

OP has a laughing fetish or something

PrueRamsay · 11/06/2026 19:57

Sorry OP is it you or is it DP who has this dreadfully irritating affliction?
